A rather cryptic message from the band has appeared on the official site:
DEEP PURPLE are very excited by the prospect of making a new and significant album. To that end they have decided to extend their writing and recording period through the Summer of 2012.
Ian Gillan said “We know we will disappoint some of our fans this Summer however we look forward very much to our Autumn/ Winter Tour and continuing our Worldwide tour with our new album in 2013
It remains to be seen what exactly does this mean as it doesn’t quite agree with the fact that tickets are already being on sale for the first few (unconfirmed) dates of the European tour in July and August.
An impressive roster of players have signed on to pay tribute to Tommy Bolin called Great Gypsy Soul. Produced by Greg Hampton and Warren Haynes, it’s a project that brings together major players who actually perform alongside Tommy Bolin’s playing and vocals from the recording outtakes to his solo debut album, Teaser. Peter Frampton, Warren Haynes (a key supporter of the project), Nels Cline, Steve Lukather, Steve Morse, Brad Whitford, Joe Bonamassa, John Scofield, Derek Trucks, Glenn Hughes and Myles Kennedy all contributed to the project.
Great Gypsy Soul will be released on 429 Records on March 27th in both a single CD format and double CD with bonus tracks. A series of promotional concerts are also in the works.
Says Warren Haynes:
Many of the guests added after the fact have a close personal connection to Tommy – all share in acknowledging his place in rock history. Watching (and hearing) it all come to fruition some 35 years later was a journey of its own – well worth the travel.

If you’re wondering how the Rock Meets Classics tour is progressing, here’s a video clip for your viewing pleasure. Ian Gillan with Mat Sinner Band and the Bohemian Symphony Orchestra Prague ripping through the Highway Star and Knocking at Your Back Door:
The show at the Moncton Casino, Canada, on February 6 is nearly sold out (there’s literally a handful of seats left) and due to the overwhelming demand a second show in Moncton has been added on February 4. Tickets for the second show are $65, $75 and $85, already on sale through Ticket Break.
Unfortunately, the Corner Brook show on February 3 has been cancelled. No explanation is given for the cancellation. The promoter Paul Merc Concerts informs that tickets will be refunded at the Pepsi Centre box office.
Corner Brook is a remote community (population 26,000) on Newfoundland’s western coast. Based on that, you can do your own speculations on the viability of bringing an artist of such calibre there.

The Broken Heart Invitation contest has concluded and the winner was announced earlier this week:
Of the several million entrants to the competition (surely that’s wrong – Ed), the exhausted judges have spent many a long winter’s black night pouring over the images drifting past their bloodshot eyes like endless rain into a paper cup (no more stealing lyrics, and less of the hyperbole! – Ed) and have narrowed them down to the final seven. As heartbreaking as it was, a winner had to emerge.
The winner is Evi Ivan for The Dream I Had. Congratulations.
The Jon Lord for BBC Proms petition that Elinor started about a month ago is still open. As of this writing, it has collected 1,582 signatures with a goal of 5,000.
C’mon! We know that more people on THS alone have read that message. With Jon now struggling with cancer (and even if he didn’t), you know it’s the right thing to do. Go and sign it now.
