August 8th, 2020 at 17:47Well deserved, it’s a fantastic album.
August 8th, 2020 at 18:26Great album, well deserved
August 8th, 2020 at 19:23Wow, this album is really good. The interplay between Morse and Airey kept my attention through the entire LP. (could have done without “What the What”)
August 8th, 2020 at 20:07Robbie Hunt it’s a boogie rockin nod to their 50’s roots so cool with me.
August 8th, 2020 at 21:05This is the first Purple album in a while that I could recommend to a young friend to explain why I love this band so much. It manages the seemingly impossible feat of staying within the idiom of classic heavy rock but, because it avoids lazy rock clichés, without sounding like a pastiche of classic heavy rock–and old-fashioned, to boot. I felt that Infinite didn’t have enough musical ideas, but this has loads. It also remains pure Purple, albeit in less obvious ways, with some highly dramatic riffs, brilliant interplay between guitar and keyboard, lots of fat Hammond sound, superbly musical playing, Gillan’s voice, of course, and even some classical influences (the orchestra on Man Alive, Don’s solo on Nothing At All). There’s really no other band it could be. And on this album Don has finally reached his full potential with Purple; some of his soloing is in the Jon Lord class. There are also some moments that are just sublime. Someone has mentioned the way Remission Possible goes straight into Man Alive. Another is later in Man Alive, when the riff is repeated but now Steve weaves a brilliant solo into it. (I don’t much like the talky parts of Man Alive, but I’m getting used to them.) The lyrics are often quite meaningful too, especially for those of us a lot closer to death than birth, as Roger put it. If this is their swan song, it’s a great one.
August 8th, 2020 at 22:45Even the US! Well done and well deserved, I must say.
August 8th, 2020 at 23:47Wonderful album 💜

August 10th, 2020 at 20:31@19 Nick: I’m not such a handy guy with posting links, sorry for that. I’m from the Netherlands and I googled the iTunes album charts for Holland and Belgium (our neighbour-country). Because the Purple guys always have huge succes in Scandinavia, I googled that too: only in Sweden top albums iTunes Whoosh was not in the top three.
August 10th, 2020 at 22:37I have some screenshots of the chart positions I posted, but I don’t know how to post that here.
Fan since early seventies.
Since 1995 I’m a frequent reader of the Highway Star. Now I work more at home, the last few months, and have some time for posting. Nice to be here!

August 11th, 2020 at 19:09@23 Giorgi:
this chart makes no sense. why there are taylor swift and alanis morissette in ‘european albums’?
August 11th, 2020 at 19:20@25 Nick, European Albums Chart – I guess this should be read as “the European chart of albums”, not the “chart of European albums”, meaning, the most popular albums in Europe, not the albums that originated from Europe.
It’s an official iTunes chart, you can read the methodology on the link above.

August 12th, 2020 at 23:29WillemPurplefan @32: how often is this chart updated — daily?
August 13th, 2020 at 00:42@Nick 34: I don’t know exactly: I think daily.
August 13th, 2020 at 06:06I finally got a chance to listen to the entire album, and I like it. I pre-ordered the CD/DVD package on Amazon and it arrived on August 11. Whoosh! has been the number 1 selling album in the Amazon Classic Rock category since before its official release. It also peaked in the Amazon New Releases category at number 3. I find this fascinating as not only did the physical CD version keep selling out on Amazon whereby the vendor would frequently show it as either on back order or shipping out in a few weeks and not arriving until September, but it also seems like those that wanted to purchase the MP3 version on Amazon were not able to download it. The above would imply that were Amazon to have enough physical CDs available and had the MP3 download option been working properly, not only would Whoosh! cement its position as the Number 1 selling album in Amazon’s Classic Rock category for a while, but it would have also likely given a better run for their money to the Number 1 and Number 2 spots in Amazon’s New Releases category. Amazon might be dismissed by some as, perhaps, not the best indicator of the album’s commercial success, but I would argue that Whoosh!’s ranking on Amazon at Number 1 for Classic Rock and Number 3 for New Releases is quite telling given that many folks around the world have more and more turned to e-commerce to purchase goods and services, especially during COVID.

Wow! Whoosh!
So many albums by so many artists over the course of my life take a number of listens to “get on board”. I’ve had a full time smile front to back on first listen and can’t take it out of my player even as there are a half dozen other discs that arrived since I received it. The queue may grow some more….
Bless the lads!

August 19th, 2020 at 16:08Peter @61: good catch, thank you!
August 19th, 2020 at 16:11Great results.Purple is basically number 1 in UK by old rules (only relevant rules based on number of bought albums). However streaming is helping to Taylor Swift as streams are converted to albums which is nonsense.First people that buy album will listen many times all songs and nobody will count that, second, several heavily streamed songs will push number of albums as it doesn’t matter do you stream few songs or entire album (it matter but not so much).Deep Purple have most loyal army in Europe, based on fisical sales.

September 23rd, 2020 at 10:51i am curius about Russia,,,infinite became Gold the first week…now What? Whoosh was deleyed to arrive in Russia?…no charts position yet…
September 28th, 2020 at 05:32I’ve been a fan of DP since 1970, with all the live albums, box sets and remastered albums, I’ve got over 110 CD’s, so it’s a bit disappointing to see them going out with a bit of a whimper. Great musicianship, and some of the best lyrics on a Purple album, but there isn’t a single exciting track. They should have made “What the What” a bit heavier and used it as the opener. Highlight of the album, Power of the Moon, Remission Possible and Man Alive.
October 10th, 2020 at 23:28@ 107. Whoosh have gone gold in Russia. Seems they don’t have any decent charts system there.

November 5th, 2020 at 06:03Just curious, what is the amount it has sold ? Is it 500,000, 1 million, 2 million? Saying it’s # 1 or # 23 doesn’t really tell me anything. Anybody know?
November 6th, 2020 at 13:54George Martin: record companies keep actual sales numbers a closely guarded secret. but these days they are not great. i recall our guesstimates of what now what?! had sold — and it was in low(ish) six digits worldwide.
November 6th, 2020 at 19:22Nick:
Can you tell me why record companies keep their sales a closely guarded secret?. I would think if one the of best bands ever released new material they would brag about it in order to help make the sales increase. If “Now What” sold lets say 200,000 how many would you guess ” Whoosh ” has sold? I bought 2 so you can start from there. All the best and I will email you before April 1st! I got a great Aprils fools all set to go.
November 7th, 2020 at 13:54This album kicks!
November 25th, 2020 at 15:02@ 112 Just read an article where they claimed Now What have sold in excess of 500000 copies. That’s a very nice figure these days!
