After all we said today

A second single for the upcoming remix of Rapture of the Deep has been released. Behold, it’s Clearly Quite Absurd.

The b-side (whatever it is in this digital world) is an instrumental version of MTV that is said to be previously available as a bonus track on the limited edition of the album (it is not clear on which exactly of the 59 variations of it).

Thanks to Trond, Amit, Tobias, and Kalle for the info.

Possibly the best song on the album,or a close second to the title cut. Certainly one of the best Purple lyrics of the last 20 years. Musically,I’ve always liked Steve’s ascending coda on the baritone guitar and Don’s solo.

My humble take. Both bananas and rotd were absolutely out of time at the Time. The problem though was not (never is) with Time. Merging the two with fillers out might have been a good album out of Time.

Rapture of the deep is also up since 2 weeks but very well hidden and can’t be found. It is a mistery cos it was published by official chanel but very hard to find…

How great ! Sound is magnificient so we can enjoy even more Gillan’s sublime work on that song.

    Kalle says:

The new MTV-Version is an instrumental studio jam. Not the old bonus track for the original album.

The studio-jam is a great find. Absolutely great rhythmguitar. And very well done solos by Steve and Don.

The ROTD video which HRISTO mentioned is the normal version, not the remix.

This sounds absolutely amazing…I bet Mr Grover and Mr Gillian will be well pleased about it !

Can’t wait for this to come out , I’m soooo excited about it . Can you imagine how Don’t let go and Before time are gonna sound !?
I’m far more excited about this then any new studio album with that clueless session player they’ve got ….Just listen to Steve’s playing on this ….get him back !!

    Dave says:

I kind of like this version better than the original. Despite the great lyrics, they sound odd; sort of like those in Drop The Weapon. I’m looking forward to it, too. I’ve been struggling a bit with not having Steve in the band. He’s accepted it, it seems. Anybody who feels the same should do what I did and check out Simon playing Satch Boogie in 1992 and the comments afterward.

EarMusic wrote that [the official studio version of] MTV was only released on limited versions of the album. This instrumental jam wasn’t released before.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Steve, calling Simon a “session player“ and Herr Morse not, is a bit rich – last I looked at my collection, Steve M played a wealth more sessions than Simon …

    Svante Axbacke says:

Well, SM has a 25 year head start on Simon. 🙂

    Uwe Hornung says:

That is and has always been a wonderful ballad.

Steve’s layered guitars are a dream too.

    MacGregor says:

A good song, Ian Gillan can really croon when he puts his mind to it, I wonder where he learnt that from. It is always refreshing when a guitarist doesn’t play their ‘traditional’ style solo. Liked the instrumental too. Rather progressive. Thanks for posting. Cheers.

    Uwe Hornung says:

He did, but he really only became busy with sessions in the 80s and 90s.

In any case, what is it supposed to mean? Ritchie was a session player for most of the 60s, Bolin played quite a few sessions in his short life, Hughes and Don Airey are sessioneers. And I’m seeing “session player” Simon opening for Lynyrd Skynyrd tomorrow!

    Martin says:

Sounds like the instrumental jam is exactly the version which was used for the final recording of „MTV“. The solos are note for note identical. But: the mix is much clearer here. I.e. in the original the bass was pretty low in the mix.

Also, the new mix of „Clearly Quite Absurd“ sounds so much better…!

Gettin‘ excited for the full album!

    Max says:

    @13

Of course they’re all session players. The difference – according to Steve #6 at least – is that Simon is a ‘clueless’ one. There you have it.

I have often wondered why some people tend to see even music as a competition. There’s guys writing in on a site dedicated to Tommy Bolin that Blackmore is so much better and what a sucker Tommy was and wrath be upon all his followers…After some 50 years. It’s ridicolous.

    @ 2…… What did you just say ? 🤔

    Uwe Hornung says:

I wonder where he learnt that from.

It must have been Dan Baird, my two cents.

    George M. says:

This is inspired stuff. Ian P. ripping himself off (Space Truckin’) during MTV is brilliant and hilarious. By comparison, =1 is ……. so-so.

Wow! that sounds good! SM sounds fantastic!!

Wow! CQA sounds amazing, B-side too! SM sounds fantastic!!

    Uwe Hornung says:

For now, Simon is exciting – as was Steve the first few years. Ritchie wasn‘t exciting on Stormbringer anymore, just stylistically impeccable (as was Steve in his later years). Tommy was exciting on CTTB, I doubt he would have been if he had stayed for another seven albums with DP.

I‘ve long given up expecting new DP members to outdo their predecessors at what those did best. To me, a new member with DP is like your daughter bringing home a new boyfriend you don‘t know to sit at the dinner table, but you give him the benefit of doubt and try hard to like him.

    MacGregor says:

@ 21- while I get what you are saying Uwe, in a sense. I am not a parent so I would never presume that sort of situation could or would be easy or hard to deal with. However, looking at that in a humorous way, what happens if your daughter’s new boyfriend is also the new band member? You enjoy him as a person and as your daughter’s friend, however do not like him as a musician in your favourite band. Or vice versa, sorry I just cannot resist. Oh, the drama of it all and the tension is palpable. Someone should get to netflix now with this, can you imagine it, the new soap medium, perhaps. It probably has been explored before, but just in case, let’s get this into some form of contract or something before someone else does. Meanwhile your daughter continues to roll her eyes and say ‘trust my old man to make a mountain out of a mole hill’. Sorry Uwe, I’m bored, a rainy day here in no man’s land, an inside day and all that goes with that. I am starting to feel a little like Anton, hanging out to go for walkie’s and also hoping my master will change the record. Cheers.

    Mike Nagoda says:

I really appreciate the clarity of the new mixes. That said, I feel overall that the drums are too loud, and the guitar and keyboards need to come up a bit. Don is especially too quiet here – I much prefer how on the original mix his solo comes roaring in, whereas here I feel it’s a bit too subtle.

That said, I will take the clarity and detail of these remixes over the original. I really like that you can hear Steve’s multi guitar parts that much more clearly, even if I feel both him and Don sit back in the mix a bit too much – hearing these acoustic guitars that much more clearly than on the original is a revelation!

  24. 24
    Simon says:

    @Uwe
Simon simply let Gillan continue. Steve changed the band’s style, just like Tommy. Simon is perfect for fans who miss Ritchie because his style is similar and… he plays the Smoke on the Water riff just as well. 🙂 After all, it’s the most important thing, heh

  25. 25
    Gerd says:

Hi, i like the mix, but the sound of the tom-toms of Paiceys drums is strange: for ex. listen from Min. 3:53 to 3:56 to his toms-toms…??

  26. 26
    Adel Faragalla says:

Clearly quite absurd is a fabulous song but in the grand scheme of DP songs collection it’s the song that is more likely to send you to sleep the most. It’s not a criticism but it’s more of a fact.
Regarding the MTV jam it’s would be great to do it as a part of the live set list before Hush. As it’s very catchy, energetic and highly entertaining.
    Peace ✌️

    Fla76 says:

    #21 Uwe

    I agree with you

I’m re-listening to all the Morse era records these days, and I can confirm that since Bananas Steve basically bores me with his way of playing, without riffs, with solos that are often repetitive in the progression and in the bending of the first note of the solo, which is really overused by him.

I currently consider Simon’s playing less repetitive and more creative, although technically he is probably inferior to Steve’s.

That said, Steve’s creative contribution to the first three albums with Purple was enormous and fundamental.

and Clearly Quint Absurd is one of the 10 absolute masterpieces of the entire Morse era.
