Rapture remix
Edel is preparing to release a remixed version of Rapture of the Deep for the 20th anniversary of the album. The new mix was done under Roger Glover’s supervision, and mastered at Hamburg’s renowned Chameleon Studios.
Bonus tracks include previously unreleased studio jams and instrumental takes, recorded during the writing sessions for the album. Among them is Closing Note — an instrumental piece by Steve Morse. The bonus tracks are said to be exclusive to the physical formats, and will not be available for streaming or download. The liner notes include insights from Roger Glover and Classic Rock’s Geoff Barton. Artwork has also been revised with the new colour scheme and embossed print.
We are still awaiting any additional information from the label, but the release already started popping up on online retailer listings, where one can encounter 2CD, and 3LP in either solid black or translucent blue vinyl.

[Update June 9]: The press release was circulated today, and it doesn’t add much to what we’ve reported above. The remixed version of Junkyard Blues was released as a single to go with the announcement:
The album can be pre-ordered via this link
Thanks to Trond Strøm, Tim Summers, Doug MacBeath, Amit Roy, AndreA, Uwe Hornung, steve4422, Tobias Janaschke, and everybody else (whom we forgot to mention explicitly) for the info.
It’s beautiful. All of it. Thank you to everyone involved. My wallet is ready.
June 7th, 2025 at 17:10This is phenomenal news!!!!!
June 7th, 2025 at 18:33Thank you Rog and Edel.
Incredibly grateful.
I will buy every release with this by the way !
Good News!😃
June 7th, 2025 at 19:03And may I add… the new cover looks so much better!
This is a remarkable album 😊
‘Girls like that’ and ‘Kiss tomorrow goodbye’ stays in my mind and heart forever,.
Maybe not what someone would call ‘big art’, but for a nice walk in the forest, when you are fed up at listening to the birds (😄) they are really good 🤩
Looking forward to the new gems 💎 ☺️
June 7th, 2025 at 20:30I’m buying this !
June 7th, 2025 at 20:59…doesn’t the art work look better !?
Reminds me of what a great and diverse album it was ( and Bananas) …just think how good it could have been if it had been produced properly and didn’t sound so flat !
And about time too!
German record company and German studio, jawohl – und es mag am deutschen Wesen einmal noch die Welt genesen …

June 7th, 2025 at 21:43This should please a few fans here no doubt and it is good to see. Of course it leaves us wondering about a few other albums and that remix possibility. Good to see Roger Glover involved. Settle down now Uwe. Cheers.
June 7th, 2025 at 21:49I think is one of my least favorite records sonically. Song wise and performance it was superb though….just a tough listen due to the production. I’m looking forward to it.
My 2 Cents,
Frank
June 7th, 2025 at 23:01Excellent news! Many think Rapture is a subpar Purple product, however I feel it is one of the Morse-era’s finest albums. My only reservation up until now, has been the muffled production. With a new remix, I am sure this album will garner much more respect. And the new bonus material sounds intriguing. Can’t wait!!
June 7th, 2025 at 23:01Excellent news! “Money Talks” is a classic, in my view, and would be on my top ten Purple list.
June 8th, 2025 at 02:24I can’t wait to hear the remix.
June 8th, 2025 at 07:43I love that order of songs and the fact that they included and placed ‘Things I never said’ as the second track which is in line with the live performances on tour when they used to play it as the second track on the live stage set list.
I am hoping and praying that ‘Bananas’ will be next.
Peace ✌️
If they could get a richer sound and take away that bloody awful intro to Money Talks I will consider buying it. 😅
June 8th, 2025 at 11:10I argued elsewhere at the time that without the fillers there were seven tracks that would have made an album the length of the original Mk 2 ones – all with seven tracks of course – that would have been an absolute cracker. I was beginning to think that Roger had given up on this but am looking forward to hearing what he’s done – hopefully he’s got rid of that dreadful fade at the very end!
June 8th, 2025 at 11:20BTW, I guess most of you can either not see it at all or can stream it whenever you want so it doesn’t matter that “They All Came Out To Montreux” is on BBC4 again tonight. All three eps starting at 11.50.
And what a shock to hear Deep Purple mentioned in the ITV commentary of the otherwise dire England football match yesterday.
Good news as the original production was pretty dire, just need to do Bananas now, and =1 isn’t great either, that could do with a remix also.
June 8th, 2025 at 11:52Can’t Wait!! Finally!!
June 8th, 2025 at 13:02Please remix/ remaster Bananas, IMO opinion one of DP Steve Morse era best, right up there with Purpendicular.
June 8th, 2025 at 14:49Looking for to RG’s mix of Rapture. Please remix/ remaster Bananas, IMO opinion one of DP Steve Morse era best, right up there with Purpendicular.
June 8th, 2025 at 14:50What about the vinyl version of “Abandon” and “Bananas”???
June 8th, 2025 at 17:10Ole, why get rid of the intro? You could skip it. To me it is ace and as good as the come.
Very good news indeed, keep bringing them on please!
June 8th, 2025 at 17:55I am very excited to hear this!! I always thought both Rapture and Whoosh suffered from a bad mix and are great records – glad to see one of them is getting a remix with Roger’s assistance! Will definitely be buying! Is there a release date?
June 8th, 2025 at 20:03After the way Steve has taken a bashing since he left, we’ll have to see if Roger has completely eliminated his guitar parts on the remix.
June 8th, 2025 at 20:31Oh come on John, if you think Steve has been “bashed” by DP in hindsight, then you have no idea what bashing ex-members really is. By rock band standards Mk VIII’s dirty laundry hasn’t even been worn yet. 😂
Read an Eagles or Fleetwood Mac bio for further elucidation!
June 8th, 2025 at 23:12I had lost hope that this release would materialise
Very excited
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrrq54ntH5M
my first impression is that this new version is an obvious upgrade!
June 9th, 2025 at 09:40Junkyard Blues remixed
https://deeppurple.lnk.to/Junkyard_BluesPR
My favourite song in WRONG MAN
June 9th, 2025 at 11:24One of the three albums who needed remix+reissue, with Bananas and Abandon, any news about those please?
June 9th, 2025 at 11:48I am waiting for the remix of =1 also…🤣
June 9th, 2025 at 14:33RotD was the first album Deep Purple recorded under Edel / EarMusic, which remains their label to this day. So, in a way, this release is a celebration of 20 years of their partnership.
Abandon and Bananas are under EMI. Or some other label. Point being that Edel does not own the rights to those recordings, so a remix is unlikely until that gets sorted out. Even the original records are not available on streaming services.
June 9th, 2025 at 14:33Oh my, it now sounds like it was freshly re-recorded!
https://youtu.be/VORO_XDRiFU
I doubt whether EDEL even own the rights for DP albums prior to Rapture, they had acquired the latter however already for a while
and rereleased it in its original mix.
They are the first record company that actually does something for DP in a long time. Diese treuen Deutschen …
June 9th, 2025 at 14:44This news is like balm for my wounded heart after Steve Morse left the band… Thank you so much, Roger!
June 9th, 2025 at 14:46Does anyone know, why wasn’t the mixing done properly in the first place? The new mix is much better to my ears. Only the drums are too low in the mix. Drum sound is better than in the original though.
June 9th, 2025 at 15:03Absolutely great news to have this great album remixed. I thought it was very flat, and it was hard to listen the album. I constantly found myself playing with the trebles to get the lower the bass in the mix
June 9th, 2025 at 15:08“The new mix was done under Roger Glover’s supervision…”
BY WHOM?
BY WHOM, MOTHERF*****?
Seriously, it’s the year 2025, another classic rock band just recently announced a boxed set that contains one ‘AI remix’, whatever on earth that means, and well, not having a human credited with this remix makes me very nervous. Even if the one track we have right now does sound fuller.
June 9th, 2025 at 17:35Also, I think it’s kind of pointless to ask Edel to remix albums that they don’t own the rights or the masters for. Holding your breath waiting for new versions of Abandon, Bananas or HOBL may be detrimental to your health.
June 9th, 2025 at 18:39I just heard the remix of Junkyard Blues – it’s like night and day!!!! Everything is crystal clear, and Gillan’s vocals no longer sound harsh (his syballants pop out like ice picks in the original mix). You can actually hear the attack and definition in the drums, it’s incredible. I’m not sure what sorcery Roger has pulled off here, but I am really really excited to get this!
My only complaint is Steve does seem a bit quiet in the mix compared to the original, and Paicey a bit loud. but that’s a matter of taste – also, I’m biased as a guitarist 😉
I honestly think Roger should be supervising mixes of the Ezrin produced albums going forward, and definitely remixes of the previous five albums with Bob – if things sound this good on the remix of Rapture, Roger should be at the board with Bob going forward, imo. The Ezrin era records have suffered from imbalanced mixes, and too much compression overall, and lack clarity and definition to my ears.
What a fantastic remix – I’m really, really giddy now, and can’t wait!
June 9th, 2025 at 21:03@32 “AI Remix” probably means they didn’t have access to the multitrack tapesx, and had to use AI to split the tracks up.
June 9th, 2025 at 21:15The only thing I would want on Abandon remixed is Don’t Make Me Happy as that was accidentally mixed in mono on the album CD (and they never corrected it even on later pressings) and a stereo version only available as a single at the time. Otherwise Abandon sounds fine to me – it’s a dark, but well-sounding record in my ears.
Bananas is a little shrill, that could certainly do with a remix.
Unlike apparently most of you, I don’t have any issues with the Bob Ezrin era productions at all.
June 10th, 2025 at 05:16What a nice surprise.
I’ve been wanting this for a long time and didn’t expect it.
The new mix sounds truly fantastic. The songs deserve it. I’m excited for the rest of the tracks.
June 10th, 2025 at 05:46Such a fine news to hear. Definitely, songwise, my top 3 of albums with Steve. The album of material assembled with swagger and wide breadth of interesting ideas. “Clearly Quite Absurd” and “Before Time Began” are my favourites, big classics from the era, pity that the former never found it’s way to the stage.
The selected track was never a big standout and I agree that Paicey is now “a lot on top on it”, still it does sound much more organic.
And I like the refurbishment of the sleeve – the colours make it look much better, though the idea for the sketch was always a fine wink of an eye to me.
I’m really looking forward to this!!!
June 10th, 2025 at 06:15@32, please read the official announcement from Ear.music:
It’s Clearly Quite Absurd that it’s already been 20 years since Deep Purple’s Rapture of the Deep was released. While later albums like Now What?!, inFinite, Whoosh!, and the recent =1 received wide acclaim and topped charts around the world, Rapture of the Deep has often flown under the radar — despite its own commercial success at the time of release.
For us, it’s the album that set the tone for Deep Purple’s music in the 21st century. Now, newly mixed by Eike Freese under the guidance of Roger Glover himself, Rapture of the Deep shines with a sonic clarity that almost makes you feel like you’re hearing it for the first time. This new edition also comes with reimagined artwork and a bonus CD/LP featuring newly mixed, previously unreleased instrumental studio rehearsals from the songwriting sessions — including a completely unreleased composition titled Closing Note, an instrumental piece by Steve Morse.
If you’re a Deep Purple fan, this is an album we can wholeheartedly recommend.
But be warned: once you hear it again in this new light, it might just earn a permanent spot in your collection. Start with Junkyard Blues – out today!
For the record, Roger told me about this project back in 2017! All original tapes are kept safely. No AI at all.
June 10th, 2025 at 06:23Hopefully they will get around to do The House Of Blue Light, I think its a great album that would benefit from a remix, the songs are great as is the playing.
June 10th, 2025 at 08:46Wow!! JYBlues sounds fantastic! Steve sounds amazing!!
June 10th, 2025 at 10:42all the old unremixed records sound better than =1
June 10th, 2025 at 12:46Very sad
If this sells well – and why shouldn’t it, sales between Jylland and Copenhagen alone will elevate it to stratospheric heights – and Roger’s health holds up then I think remixes of prior work will only be a question of time (and EDEL will get their hands on them where needed, the other companies don’t seem interested in any case and have the stuff gathering dust in their vaults). Even without the original masters, AI could do something with separating the tracks for, say, Perfect Strangers, Coverdale has set the bar and the standard for that with what he did with his debut solo album.
Trust good ole capitalism to make products available where there is a demand. One of its unquestionable benefits/advantages.
I like the way EDEL treat DP, I’m sure they have better sellers in their roster, but they seem to take genuine pride in having signed them. So many signature bands from the 70s were treated crap by their record companies once they weren’t fashionable anymore. With EDEL there seems to be some dedication.
I remember someone from the record business once saying “with a band like the Stones it doesn’t matter how much they demand or whether their sales on your label will guarantee a net profit, you just want to have them signed as legends, they’re that trophy you want on your wall”.
June 10th, 2025 at 15:42Good news . Was about time. This album deserve it. Michael Bradford made a mess in production and mixing . Is good to see Mr. Glover is involved in the project. Good move from the management. Even the art looks so enhanced ! Long live Deep Purple !
June 10th, 2025 at 17:40Great great news!
June 10th, 2025 at 17:47I just compared the Junkiard new mix against the old one.
What a difference!
Way way better.
And 20 years? How time flies indeed.
“…doesn’t the art work look better !?”
“And I like the refurbishment of the sleeve – the colours make it look much better, though the idea for the sketch was always a fine wink of an eye to me.”
Uhum, the original art was from one of those once popular men’s magazines starting with a ‘P’ (there were really only two) …
– no, not fishing, cigars, cars, mercenary job offers or aeroplanes, wimmin, wihimmin …
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqDjMZKf-wg
… which Roger had been leafing through on tour, no doubt looking for the weather report or something. Don’t read anything into this although he is a fluid bass player too.
June 10th, 2025 at 18:58I wonder why Bradford pretty much failed in the production of both Bananas and ROTD (though there is good material on both so the atmosphere in the studio must have been inspirational)? This was a guy who knew how a good record has to sound, he co-wrote and co-produced Uncle Cracker’s worldwide massive millennium hit ‘Follow Me’:
https://youtu.be/0Gjx-ZQuQ_Y
Yup, that is him (Michael Bradford) not taking a leak, but water-hosing the lawn (in case urine doubt!).
And, unusual for a black guy from Detroit, he was a massive DP and Rainbow fan as a teen. He thinks to this day that working with DP was “one of the best things in my life” and considers them his friends, listen to him here talk about it from 01:02:40 to 01:15:30…
https://youtu.be/NVc6EJK0kYU
It is well worth your time because in the course of it you’ll learn that
– Purple were attracted to Michael via hearing ‘Follow Me’ on the radio while touring Germany 🇩🇪!
– Michael loves Paicey’s utter control of the sound of his outsize drum kit.
– Deep Purple spent years to get – you’ll never guess this one! – QUINCY JONES to produce them, but it somehow never worked out.
– Bananas (the song), even though a complex number, was recorded in one take.
June 11th, 2025 at 01:57The product info on Amazon.com is saying that MTV wasn’t on the original CD, which it surely was. Just a mistake? Or was the album released without MTV in some regions?
June 11th, 2025 at 02:01@48 Andrew
June 11th, 2025 at 08:01As far as I know, it wasn’t included on the regular album.
It was a bonus track on a german special edition, in North America and on the Tour Edition (the blue one).
@48: I thought the same as you but I was informed that it was on the European tin can box edition of the release.

@50 Yes, you’re right. I have it.
June 11th, 2025 at 10:25@32 from ear music’s press release which includes the name of the person who did the mix under RG’s supervision.
“It’s Clearly Quite Absurd that it’s already been 20 years since Deep Purple’s Rapture of the Deep was released. June 11th, 2025 at 14:31@49 Martin
June 11th, 2025 at 19:03Thanks–I guess I have the regular North American one! I would have looked at it differently if I’d known that someone had judged it to be a bit sub-par. Or may be it was thought that no one outside North America would know what MTV (the cable channel) was.
I am not a fan of these remixes. It’s like saying that the original version is not good enough. It’s just a way to cash in. And the studio rehearsals may be interesting, but personally I am full with these market operations.
June 12th, 2025 at 05:29@57: I understand your sentiment but in this case, it seems most people involved – record company, band, fans – agree that the original version indeed wasn’t good enough.
June 12th, 2025 at 08:25I’d like a new remixing on IN ROCK. It sounds too old
June 12th, 2025 at 11:36Eike Freese did the mix on the non album infinite tracks that were released on the singles
June 12th, 2025 at 12:42@60 David Black
June 12th, 2025 at 20:25… he is also credited for mixing the two live albums “From the rising sun…”, “…to the setting sun”.
AndreA
June 12th, 2025 at 22:35There is a remix of In Rock …and Fireball too …I have both
So do I, AndreA, for all its unbridled garage charm, In Rock never really sounded good or pleasant on an upmarket hifi, all its sonic flaws coming to the fore. It’s a ferocious record, just not a very well-recorded one.
With today’s technology and some AI support, it needs a remix from the ground up, including a clean-up of the individual instrument tracks and getting rid of some of the distortion, some of the echo-o-o-o and delay-ay-ay-ay is still very 60s too.
The risk is of course that during such a process, In Rock might loose some of its immediacy and general headbang appeal, but I’d a least like to listen to the result of such a salvaging job before passing judgement. The original mix will always be there for posterity.
Of course, “it sounds too old”, is not just the sonics: Little Ian played on In Rock still a lot like he had done with Mk I, he was still transitioning to a straighter style – just listen to how his drumming changed from In Rock to Machine Head and WDWTWA.
June 12th, 2025 at 23:07@61 good intel. My point was to answer Reinder to indicate that the remix wasn’t AI and was in safe hands – which is reinforced by your info.
June 13th, 2025 at 10:51I have the first CD master of “in Rock” and doesn’t sound good. The voice of Gillan in Child in Time is sooo low in the mix.
June 14th, 2025 at 06:53Glover then made a remix, in 1995, with bonus tracks. And THAT is a remix that had to be done, and I consider it the definitive edition.
All these new remixes are completely unuseful and the only way for record companies to cash in.
@63 Uwe,
June 14th, 2025 at 11:17I respect your knowledge about Deep Purple. You know almost everything. You are the living Deep Purple “Bible”, but sometimes I wonder.. are you maybe a record sales agent…
I was 16 when I bought a record called “In Rock” in a record store in Zagreb, Croatia (former Yugoslavia) on a street called Bogovićeva. I still have it today. I also have all the reissues, mostly out of respect for the band. I kissed my first girl with Child in Time.
The first time I cried for a girl with “Mistreated”. I remember it like it was yesterday. I am not a musician, but I am a listener and fan of a band called Deep Purple. The new remix will give me a “new” sound. Drums turned down, guitar turned up.. Will it improve that record and the feeling I had in 1976.. I don’t think so..
Cheers..
@63. You’re joking I hope…? All the buzzes and clicks and distortion bring In Rock to life. Why kill it by making it sound less 60s – especially as that is when it was recorded. It sounds how it was, and is, meant to sound – the best album by anyone, ever. Simple as that.
June 14th, 2025 at 12:59Please! That In Rock remix is by now 30 (!) years old and was done in the stone age of remixing for CD. It in no way reflects what could be done today. Name me one other album as pivotal and as widely successful from that era as In Rock whose last (and only!) remix (and remaster) date(s) back that long? That 1995 remix is by now in itself an audio artifact and NOT at all state of the art.
Having IG so low in the mix on In Rock was intentional, Blackmore wanted the focus to be on “the Gorgan” – guitar and organ (just as he had the great twin vocals in the Mistreated coda mixed down because he wanted his solo emphasized). Add to that how in the early 70s loud vocals in mixes were deemed unfashionably commercial and teenybopperish (just listen to how loud Chas Chandler mixed Noddy Holder’s voice on the Slade singles). Blackmore’s snappish comment to Ian Gillan as the latter wanted his vocals louder on In Rock: “Who do you think you are, Gillan, fucking Tom Jones?!” encapsulates that approach. To this day, my wife is of the opinion that Ian Gillan’s vocals – both on DP albums and live – are not loud enough for her.
June 14th, 2025 at 13:18Glover never remixed all of In Rock (and it was remastered by Peter Mew, not Roger), just Flight Of The Rat and Speed King – with Cry Free and Black Night added as non-original album tracks. Frankly, I don’t even know whether the original masters for the individual instrument tracks for all In Rock songs exist, given that the album is a hodgepodge of recordings from three different studios. I’d wager the guess that if they did we would have long heard a 30th, 40th or 50th Anniversary remix of the complete album which at least in Europe is generally regarded as the one where DP were closest to and even defined the Zeitgeist. A 30 year old remaster/partial remix for an album as classic as this is hilarious.
Anyway, my copy, bought in 1995, is by now so old that the pages of the booklet have assumed a yellowish tinge. 😁
I’m listening to it right now, it is likely Ritchie’s guitar that is recorded the least well (his ES 335 never recorded as well as his Strats IMHO), but there is quite a bit not so pleasant distortion on Ian’s vocals too. It’s essentially a garage sound we’re hearing which has its charm of course, but there are albums from 1969/70 that sound a whole lot better.
“All these new remixes are completely unuseful and the only way for record companies to cash in.”
I politely disagree, Pier, and you know what? Even the first vinyl issue of In Rock was released by Harvest to – shock, gasp, horror! – “cash in”, they were not giving it away for free, I was around at the time, my older brother even had to spend his Deutschmark allowance on it. It is called capitalism and record companies tend to subscribe to it.
Plus: No one needs to buy remixes and remasters if they think they are fine with what they already have.
June 14th, 2025 at 15:22@65 The 1995 CD of In Rock is a remaster, not a remix. Only a few songs from the album (plus the unedited Black Night) got remixed by Roger for the bonus section. I don’t think the 1995 CD sounds great – Peter Mew is not one of my favourite mastering engineers – and the remixes have the vocals a bit too low, but there is potential. Even the tracks on A Fire In The Sky (remastered from the original mixes by Andy Pearce) are better than the 1995 versions. I’d like a full remaster of the album by Andy – which apparently exists on vinyl already – plus a full remix.
June 15th, 2025 at 07:39Pacuha, those memories are great and no remix will or should alter them. I have similar ones.
I was long a sceptic about CDs offering a better sound than vinyl – until one day (I hadn‘t switched to digital yet) in the late 80s I heard Lalena on CD (it wasn‘t even a very good transfer) in my brother’s living room and could for the first time make out what Paicey actually played with his bass drum – after having listened to that song on vinyl countless times before. I decided then and there that I needed to switch my collection to CD – all of it.
A remix is essentially like buffing up a vintage car for display. I have yet to hear a remix of a DP album that would not have me immediately recognize the band. And I‘m really craving for a mix of Rainbow‘s Rising where you can hear bass and keyboards proper and not just guitar and drums as well as Ronnie‘s voice.
So a new mix won‘t change your cherished feelings, but there is always something new to detect.
June 16th, 2025 at 06:11The booklet notes for the 1995 anniversary edition say “..comprising 1995 mixes done by RG from the original 8 tracks.”
Given the limitations of the original recordings being on only 8 tracks there is presumably a limitation on how radical a remix would be.
June 16th, 2025 at 12:55@69 😳
June 16th, 2025 at 17:42Me too, I never understand the legend that says an LP sounds better than a CD…
@73
AndreA, to be honest I think most of the ‘vinyl is way better than CD’ comes from the notion that almost everything in the good old days were better ☺️
I guess there is a difference, but I am thrilled that I don’t have to dust off the disc all the time, and that I can enjoy the pure sound.
June 16th, 2025 at 20:12The true ‘nerds’ can detect some depth are missing, from the CDs, and I guess they are right, but I’m not a nerd or so smart I can hear that 😄
And again, CDs are way more convenient 😊
Yes David, but what if only the eight-tracks of Flight of the Rat and Speed King still existed? It happens more often than one thinks that the original recordings have not been completely archived and preserved. Jethro Tull lost most of the TOFRR,TYTD original master tapes. The Steven Wilson remix had to be done from a TV show as the source material.
June 16th, 2025 at 20:34Bass frequencies-wise, a CD creams vinyl into the ground and stomps on it. That is simply audio-physics. Records with grooves were invented at a time when bass frequencies could not yet be electrically/electronically generated/created, they were always an unsuitable physical medium for low bass frequencies, but until the advent of CDs there was no good alternative.
June 16th, 2025 at 21:12Uwe, I do not know the proverbial sh*t about audio-physics plus I have hearing issues – but I do know that those FREE albums never sounded as good on cd as they did on vinyl. Especially bass wise. Same goes for the early WS stuff up to Slide it in and other recordings like Ella & Louis.
Cds are convinient and all, that is why I got thousands of them. But vinyl delivers a warmer sound for me. Just saying.
