This song – the real true king here is doing a magnificent job 🥰💜💜

Woah what a voice he has!

The former singer of Trouble, well I guess he would have loved to have this raw talent and burning voice 😊

    Steve says:

Not my favourite Gillan song but it did introduce me to the band when they performed it on Top of the Pops…the next day, I cycled into town, bought the single …with ” Your sisters on my list ” on the B side …and a free single with ” SOTW , Vengeance and Mr Universe ” …live from Reading…and that was it ! ..I was hooked !!

Gillan and Glover on uk telly in, I think ..1988

    “He-who-shall-not-be-named-in-HER-presence!”
    – 😄 that’s exactly right

Even you have to admit how unbelievably better Ian is singing ‘Trouble’ than the dude who launched it ☺️

    MacGregor says:

@ 2 – Return to Sender indeed Uwe, it is a good song, I always liked it. We need to sort out some way of getting a huge Elvis poster, as he looks in that video, pinned onto Karin’s bedroom wall. Without her knowledge of course. Has anyone Renés number, surely he and Anton would enjoy doing that for a laugh, Or perhaps not. They may never be seen again. Cheers.

“..getting a huge Elvis poster, as he looks in that video, pinned onto Karin’s bedroom wall”

    – 😆🤣

    OVER. MY. DEAD. BODY.

    “Has anyone Renés number”
    😂😂
    – I have by now instructed René to not answering his phone!

“surely he and Anton would enjoy doing that for a laugh”
    – 😝 IF they would enjoy it then I would pack their bags in a hurry and show them out!

“They may never be seen again”
    – EXACTLY!
And the same goes for anybody who will put a poster up of anyone else than Ian Gillan! 😆😄😂

    Uwe Hornung says:

The irony is that Karin in her anti-Elvis crusade has done more than anybody else here to entrench with everyone that Ian patterned his vocals after the King. 😆 It has really reached a stage that whenever I hear Elvis now I always register little mannerisms IG has purloined for his own style.

The “butter tenor” is at the heart of the Gillan universe and Karin has been his useful tool and prophet. 😎

Not really, I find Elvis to be the best and most variable, also most emotive singer from the 50s era, more sexy than Bill Haley, more variable than Little Richard, with more a range than Chuck Berry and a lot more tuneful than Jerry Lee Lewis. He was pretty much the complete package: jazz blues, soul/gospel, country/bluegrass Belcanto and folk all rolled into one voice.

That voice he lets kick in at 00:42 out of nowhere, Karin, are you sure that is adequately described with “butter tenor”? Aw woman, recant your erroneous views, fall to your knees and repent if you please!!!

@ 7 -” OVER. MY. DEAD. BODY.” Oh Karin, you shouldn’t have said that. That just gives people ideas and I cannot resist. What about if your coffin was an Elvis one? On top a full length image, on the sides too, and worst of all, inside on the lid. That way you could be with him for an eternity, looking at each other, he may even be winking at you, he he he. Sorry, but you did prompt me. And I will be very surprised if Uwe doesn’t take that further too. Cheers.

If a young Elvis gave Karin even as much as a wink and his crooked smile, all you would hear is her servile purr! 🤣

    @12

Uwe, you really must have confused me with someone else!

If I am FORCED to name some celeb I find mildly cute, I have to say a fella like Andy Garcia, when he was young-ish!
    https://youtu.be/Jc-tIJgOhLY?si=ABofrgGPSXh_WA26

Otherwise I am a serious woman without any time to such shinanigans! In my very meager free time I tend to listen to beautiful music made by the best rockband in the multiverse, Purple, with the very best vocalist ever, Ian Gillan 🥰

And will you please stop this nonsense about EP 😝

“Not really, I find Elvis to be the best….”

    – 🤡
Uwe now you’re just being stubborn!

I have this distinct feeling that no matter what I say, as a principle you’re always opposite!

    Why keep on fighting this?
Come to the sunny side, be where the good humour is, where the really good coffee is (😍) instead of always being against poor little innocent me 😇☺️

Huh? Big DP fan I was as a teen, I had this Suzi poster

    at my bedside, left wall.

It was good for my right hand technique and dexterity too.

    Playing bass I mean.

I’ll bet you played a lot of solos when you were a teenager. 😈 😈 😈

    Uwe Hornung says:

Auntie Purplette, now don’t you be naughty or Karin will again start to ask awkward questions! We’ve had that enough.

  22. 22
    Uwe Hornung says:

Yup, while my bass guitar gently seeps!

  23. 23
    Steve says:

    Hi Mac
Thanks for the Hawkwind intro ….I’m into it …and dig it ….I can see why you smoke so much whacky baccy down there ! Lol …personally, I’m playing chess listening to it .
They seem to be a pretty unique band, you can’t pigeon hole them …although, I’m getting connotations of space trucking live , Jon’s solo spots …and either Budgie copied their bass lines …or vice versa …
Space is Deep, levitation and a few others whose name escapes me …but, I’ll crack on with them and report back ….I’m in Devon so, I might be near your mate down here !

  24. 24
    MacGregor says:

We could all think that Uwe’s ‘bass playing’ was much more fluid back then.

  25. 25
    Karin Verndal says:

    @21

    No need to be alarmed!
I’ve learned my lesson….. never ever ask Uwe anything ☺️

  26. 26
    MacGregor says:

Talking of Suzi Q, has anyone watched that episode of Midsomer Murders where she is fatally electrocuted on stage while singing. It is a classic. Cheers.

“We could all think that Uwe’s ‘bass playing’ was much more fluid back then.”

You got your tongue around that so nicely, Herr MacGregor! Yet dripping with machismo I might add! And it extends to others too:

“Uwe macht die Frauen nass, denn er spielt Elektrobass!”

    Uwe Hornung says:

Mindful how Karin might be reading this too, who can forget Leather Tuscadero in ‘Happy Days’ and her overt musical influence?

Elvis is truly everywhere, Frau Verndal … 😎

Can’t we have these fine pages renamed “Long Lonely Highway (Star)”?

Although Uwe’s rhythm was left to be desired and his timing was ‘all over the place.”

  32. 32
    MacGregor says:

@ 23- thanks Steve, yes there is a bit of diversity there with Hawkwind, particularly in the 1970’s. With Bob Calvert on lead vocals or without him, both are rather different to each other in certain aspects. They were a bit more ‘punkish’ and even ‘new wave’ in the late 70’s period with Calvert and his influence. The earlier 70’s Hawkwind was more trippy acid flavoured space rock, with an influence from Michael Moorcock, the science fiction writer. Space is Deep. Glad you are enjoying it. Cheers.

I think that applies to most of us here…
