Honeysuckle’s bloomin’ on the honeysuckle vine
We were wrong, and the classic Gillan video bonanza continues unabashedly. In this instalment: frenetic miming to New Orleans at the Top of the Pops, dated March 26th, 1981.
Thanks to steve4422 for the vigilance.
Amazing 🤩
March 9th, 2025 at 00:53So full of lust for life 🥰
The 1960 original, it was a dance number:
https://youtu.be/8tgAqnIqT1I
Another cover of it – from 1968 by someone who also penned songs for Purple:
https://youtu.be/zMDzwZ2jsKg
Listening to both, ole Neil took more liberties reinterpreting it than GILLAN, they basically just added the metal descending chords towards the end of their version, but otherwise stuck to the Gary U.S. Bonds template.
Don’t knock Neil, I like him.
March 9th, 2025 at 01:50I love it!. It’s exciting &100% awesome. There’s nothing more that needs to be said. So there.
March 9th, 2025 at 01:58I wish one of those voice experts on YouTube could do a clip on analysing when and where did Ian Gillan reached the peak of his vocal power.
March 9th, 2025 at 08:33For me this song sounds like the peak of Ian Gillan vocal power and spectrum.
I think this is much harder to sing than child in time or Lucille
Pure Madness and Madness at its best 😁
Peace ✌️
@2
Imo, both the original and Neil Diamonds versions are nothing compared to Gillan!
I mean Ian’s voice suck all life and courage out of the two you link to 😄😄
@3 Agree John, wholeheartedly 💜
March 9th, 2025 at 12:20What a fantastic band !
You never knew where to look with Gillan …so much character and charisma

Here is Hadely Bop Bop …Bop.. Bop
March 9th, 2025 at 14:48Live !
It seems all this Gillan mania is having the desired effect …the boxed set is sold out on Amazon !
I think some people have got it and it’s supposed to be available..ill keep looking I guess
Come on, it’s “Junger Mann zum Mitreisen gesucht!”fairground music/Autoscootermusik. IG even said so himself when he mentioned that when he and the band visited a fairground, the owner of one of the fast rides played it over and over for them while they were rollercoasting along.
I pride myself in the fact that when I took my children (when they were still small) to fairgrounds, other parents would always have their children hand me their admission tickets/chips thinking I worked at one of the rides! 😂 I obviously looked the part.

I like Neil too, but NOT that song!
This one, on the contrary, is adorable

Even though this guy is singing even better

This new article appears to be recent with Ian Gillan looking back at the Gillan band. A few tasty bits of info regarding the demise of the band should get a ‘reaction’ of sorts. Cheers.

March 10th, 2025 at 11:28Thanks Uwe. I too love Neil Diamond. Great voice and songwriter. I didn’t know he’d done New Orleans until now and it’s been added to my IPod!
March 10th, 2025 at 13:34@9 That’s a very interesting interview, MacGregor. Thanks for putting the link up. I do think Ian may be slightly disingenuous at times. The tonsillectomy wasn’t in the Gillan days – it was around the time of the first Purple reunion tour.
March 10th, 2025 at 14:15Herr MacGregor, what an instructive interview on GILLAN, vielen Dank! 🙏 😘
This sums Ian up:
“Apart from the three years I left Purple, 1973 to 1976, I’ve been on the road since I was a kid. It’s my life.”
But obviously not Jon Lord’s and Steve Morse’s – and that is basically all there is to say about their respective departures. With DP you’re either on the train or off. Not a criticism, it’s just their credo and Big Ian represents it.
******************************
And this is oh so telling;
“Q: If you happened to encounter John again, and he was willing, would you bury the hatchet and make peace with him?”
A:[After a long pause] I don’t think so. He caused so much trouble for my manager, Phil Banfield. [What McCoy did] was unforgiveable. It made me really angry. I’ve been with Phil since 1979, his professionalism is unchallenged, and McCoy was outrageously wrong.”
Like I said, Ian has a tranquil demeanor, but he doesn’t forgive. Not McCoy and not Ritchie.
The violence bit was news to me, but it’s not unheard of in bands, UFO or Oasis … Bob Daisley’s Widowmaker saw punch-ups too.
March 10th, 2025 at 16:00“Imo, both the original and Neil Diamonds versions are nothing compared to Gillan!”
Now that’s a startling and starkly surprising statement coming from you, Karin, I’d have NEVER guessed! 🤯
March 10th, 2025 at 19:45@ 11- John M, I was wondering about that throat health issue too, but his memory does come into play there I suppose. I remember reading many years ago, (1983) that it was his vocal cord nodules that he had the operation on and we are all familiar with certain vocalists having problems with that issue. He then joins Black Sabbath and cuts loose again, old habits do die hard eh. @12- indeed Uwe, big John McCoy getting frustrated no doubt. A pity, but it happens unfortunately. A combination of a few different things going on at different times, throw alcohol and other substances into the mix and lookout! It is a good overall interview from Ian Gillan, something that I haven’t ever previously noticed from him, in regards to the deeper aspects of the Gillan band. Cheers.

Thanks for the link MacGregor ☺️
March 10th, 2025 at 21:29That was a very interesting read 🤗
It creates issues if one guy in a band is – at least on paper – a millionaire and the other guys are skint. They would see the Deepest Purple compilation in the charts selling like hot cakes, see that IG is credited as a co-writer on all but two songs and then do the math …
Uriah Heep had a similar issue. Ken Hensley had all these writer royalties from their single hits the others didn’t have. He started flaunting his wealth, it did not go down well.
It’s ironic that IG would pay the price for doing it different to Rainbow or even WS where even Jon Lord was just on a wage.
OTOH, if Phil Banfield was such good manager, why didn’t they try to break America more thoroughly? One small US tour in five years of existence is laughable.
March 10th, 2025 at 22:09@13
March 11th, 2025 at 06:00Well, I’m nothing if not loyal 😉
@16
“OTOH, if Phil Banfield was such good manager, why didn’t they try to break America more thoroughly? One small US tour in five years of existence is laughable.”
Well Uwe MAYBE it was a decision between PB and Ian!
March 11th, 2025 at 14:09Could it be that Ian, who was very much in love with his new girlfriend needed to be near her? And didn’t have to urge to celebrate great musical triumphs?
I don’t know!
I just guess our troubadour actually has a heart and needed to consolidate his relationship ☺️
You‘re not just loyal, Karin, you‘re a zealot! Of the Church of Gillan … 😂
March 11th, 2025 at 14:28Did anyone hear about this?

March 12th, 2025 at 18:29That would be lovely!
@19
March 12th, 2025 at 18:30Is that a problem? ☺️😉
Actually I’m not familiar with that church!
But I do love the music he makes 😍
Orhun, now I have (through you), way to go!

March 12th, 2025 at 20:56The only bit of info at present that I could find regarding the music at the World Cup next year. Any media that uses a photo of Ian Gillan standing next to David Coverdale regarding Deep Purple risks being in seriously bad trouble. Meaning if Karin notices that. She may even think that Uwe placed it there, he he he. Sorry Uwe, just joking everyone!

🤣🤣🤣
No no sweetie, I have actually listened to DC in our loudspeakers, and because I normally listen to all your lovely links in my ear-thingies og earphones, every detail is very much blown up, so any fault is exaggerated.
So listening to the link Uwe send me, DC with ‘Is this Love’, I was genuinely surprised! DC has a great voice!
Of course I could still detect his breathing difficulties, but because it wasn’t ‘screaming’ in my ears, I could ‘hear pass it’ – so all is well, and worse things happened at sea 😂
Have to say I am so grateful that no one of you haven’t given up on me 🤗🤗🤗
March 14th, 2025 at 17:05“I was genuinely surprised! DC has a great voice! … Have to say I am so grateful that no one of you haven’t given up on me 🤗🤗🤗”
We never did, Sister Karin: Where great darkness falls and eternal blackness threatens to devour all, the Spirit’s saving presence also grows.
My work is done here.
“I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

Proverbs 4:7!

David’s starting point is certainly this:
https://youtu.be/9-0AiRqvpMw?si=HhA0D3gH9fzD_Do2
You have to listen to this song at night for at least 2 hours straight to get into it!
here you can hear his melancholic and feeling style that later transformed into the glossy hard rock of the mid-80s.
this is the starting point that inspired many hard & heavy singers of the 90s, both in terms of pathos and attitude on stage.
which in reality already from MK III you could see David who would arrive here, and who would continue to evolve always in this territory of “baybeeee baybeeee baybeeee I’ve been losing my miiiiiiiiiiiiiind”
March 15th, 2025 at 13:53@28
Hey ! Had I known I would get homework admitting DC’s voice is great, I would not have said anything 😂😂😂
I PROMISE to listen carefully!
March 15th, 2025 at 18:24It’s originally a Bobby Bland song …
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aANNYq-6fTg
But I think the Whitesnale treatment, which reigned European concert halls as an audience participation number in the late 70s and early 80s, contributed greatly to it becoming an enduring classic:
Anybody remember Elkie Brooks of Vinegar Joe?

I like this version here with its laconic delivery:

Deep down south with a gospel touch:

Another great female version, initially very sparse:

A soul lounge jazz version:

Jay-Z raps over it:

Warren Haynes, très bluesy and with an exquisite guitar solo:

Karin, for Monday: Analyze all ten versions, write down your thoughts and prepare a power point presentation for us with the key bullet points! This will be graded and flow into your report card. 🧐
