Bubble in your beer

Them restored classic Gillan clips, they’re still coming! Here is Mr. Universe as performed on the BBC show Rock Goes To College on February 23, 1981, and complete with Bernie Tormé’s guitar solo. Now all cleaned up and restored by the latest wonders of technology.

Thanks to steve4422 for the heads-up.

John’s bass sound takes no prisoners, way to go!

If you don’t hear the difference between this (intensity!) and the lightweight Garth Rockett & The Moonshiners stuff, then you probably like your coffee with skimmed rather than real milk too.

    Brilliant!
Love the vocals, love the ‘in-your-face’ guitar 😊

That is what we missed in Sydney in late 1981. Bernie Tormé indeed. Wonderful and thank you for posting this clip.

Uwe, I do take my coffee with real milk, thank you very much 😄

And yes, I can hear the difference between the two bassists!

Could do with a full, proper Gillan concert dvd with all this stuff…and a few rarities ( I’m thinking Dead of Night type stuff ) …anyone know if such a thing exists? ( I’ve got Edinburgh 1981 ) …I’m absolutely fascinated and loving all the Gillan stuff at the moment….having a real nostalgia trip!

Oh, of course I do. And now what? Two totally different bands, different approaches, 10 years down the line…
There’s no way comparing them. Just because the Doobie Brothers didn’t sound as heavy as Black Sabbath didn’t make them a lousy band…I was just saying the Garth show is among my fave Gillan recordings because it’s pure Rock’n’Roll …and so much fun. As Rock’n’Roll should be. Much more diverse than most other live recordings of his too.

    What a great idea Steve!

And you being the one having friends in high (or low?!) places, maybe you could make that happen?
I would be ever so grateful ☺️

    Hi Karin
How’s the alternative remedies going ? Any advice for bad knees ? I have been doing some yoga lately …and boy , what a difference! I’m blown away…its like a miracle cure!

I don’t ( sadly) know about the Gillan dvd ( I’m guessing you’ve got the Edinburgh 81 dvd ?) …do you know, I was thinking, I reckon we are the most suffering of fans from the 70s Supergroups ! Just think , they all have good concert footage out there from their heyday..Sabbath, Floyd, Zep ( especially) …but not Purple ….and as for the Gillan stuff, ?? Considering they were never off British tv …its a crying shame that there is no really good complete gigs

    Hi Karin
    I found this, I think it’s from the same gig ? …https://youtu.be/Y0JOE-tQ7P4?si=IY9F1VgdiK1in3Kg

Gillan (the band) was the most interesting of the post-Purple bands, and it had some of the raw energy of the punk rock of the time.

“Any advice for bad knees ?“ – ohh several Steve!
But I need a saliva test to figure out what’s the matter and what you need!

Yoga is great, so if that helps you, keep on doing it 😊

“I reckon we are the most suffering of fans from the 70s Supergroups“
You’re completely right! No one thinks about us 😂😂
Nooo just kidding! I have several concert dvds in my collection, but I would like some new material from ‘24.

Yes, it just appeared on Ian’s fb, but with the ‘Mr Universe’-track.
Man that band knew how to rock!
(Psst: but so did Ian and the Moonshiners 😄 I have to whisper because Uwe does not seem to appreciate Ian with them! I love it, they were bubbly, pure rock’n’roll and so much fun 🤩 you know just like rock is going to be: entertaining and just for the fun of it.
In @6 you can see that Max contradicts Uwe 😅 uhh I do not have the nerves for that…😉☺️)

    Uwe Hornung says:

The Moonshiners were the type of band you buy a beer for them to play your favorite song. Great for an impromptu session, brand-devaluing for even a short undercover tour.

    Uwe Hornung says:

On The Rocks was always one of their finest numbers, great melody, dramatic riff, tension and dynamics. With GILLAN you always got the feeling like they really meant it. Rainbow were more blasé and early Whitesnake had that muso touch even when they rocked hard.

For someone who liked the early WHO, GILLAN were just perfect, they had a similar combustive touch.
