Dealing with success

Vintage TV has posted online the Friday Night Rock Show that aired on October 14 and featured an extended interview with Ian Gillan at his home in Lyme Regis.

The interview actually starts about 5 minutes into this section of the show. Once you’ve finished with that video, select “#8 Part 3” to continue with the interview.

On the green side of the grass

Glenn Hughes; photo: Joe Lester, image courtesy of Frontiers RecordsGlenn Hughes visited the University of North Dakota this past weekend to lecture the students on the subject that he knows all too well — drug addiction. Student newspaper reports:

Whether a recovering alcoholic or a young at-risk student, Hughes has made it his mission to do what he can to intercept those at risk before substantial issues begin to arise. The wisdom he has gained through his 65 years is something Hughes believes he did not have at a younger age and a quality many others could benefit from.

“My message to you all is that I hope you can hear what I’m saying and I hope you can understand that what I did helped nobody,” Hughes said. “I’ve watched my friends struggle with the same disease and lost too many of them along the way.”

“I don’t remember anything about the ‘80s. I remember absolutely nothing. It’s all just a blur.”

“There are two types of people on this planet: alcoholics and non-alcoholics. There is no in between … it is a terrible disease that needs to be treated.”

“Without guidance from above and without the channel that I’m given to give back to you, I don’t know where’d I’d be today. I am so supremely grateful to be on the green side of the grass to come from a loving family and one that was willing to be so supportive.”

Pictures from Shizuoka

Kei Ono took some excellent pictures at the Whitesnake gig in Shizuoka on October 10.

There is more where it came from. Check out Kei’s Flikr gallery.

Fun fact: the night before, on October 9, Whitesnake headlined the second day of Loud Park 16, a two day festival in Saitama. An ex-snakeman Doug Aldrich played at the festival on October 9 with his current band The Dead Daisies. Another family tree member Ronnie Romero was also at the same festival the day before, on October 8, with his band Lords of Black.

Bob’s your uncle

The press release circulated today by the Swedish Academy is a masterpiece of succinctness:

The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2016 is awarded to Bob Dylan

“for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”.

And that’s it.

What this has to do with The Highway Star, you may ask? Well, for starters, before him rock’n’roll lyrics rarely went above the level of “shake, baby, shake” (albeit nothing is wrong with that per se). After him, they started telling the stories of struggle between good and bad and calling to give peace a chance.

So, cheers to Uncle Bob!

Mini-Purplefest in Warsaw

Poster: Jon Lord Memorial Concert, Warsaw 2016

There will be a couple of loosely associated Purple events held next week in Warsaw, Poland.

The Jon Lord Memorial Concert will happen on Thursday, October 13, at Proxima Club. Seeing as this is the fifth such occasion happening annually since 2012, it can safely be chalked as a good tradition (this tradition is the brainchild of Polish musician Łukasz Jakubowicz). The house band Made in Warsaw (with Łukasz on keyboards) will perform with an array of guest musicians from the local bands. The 3+ hours program will include big hits and obscure numbers from Deep Purple and Whitesnake.

What: V-th Jon Lord Memorial Concert
When: Thursday, October 13, 2016; doors open 19:00, show starts 20:00
Where: Klub Proxima, ul. Żwirki i Wigury 99a, Warszawa
Tickets: 30 zł in advance / 38 zł at the door
Advance tickets can be purchased online @ ticketpro.pl, ebilet.pl, eventim.pl, palladium.art.pl, and offline at Bileteria Palladium (ul. Złota 9 Warszawa), Bileterie Empik, Media Markt and Saturn stores.

The second event — Kill the King — a tribute to the late Cozy Powell, Ronnie James Dio, and Jimmy Bain, will be held next day at Club Rock. A tribute band (with Łukasz Jakubowicz once again at the keyboards) will perform Rainbow On Stage from start to finish. Piotr Brzychcy will do the guitar duties.

What: Kill the King, tribute to Cozy Powell, Ronnie James Dio, and Jimmy Bain
When: Friday, October 14, 2016
Where: Club Rock, ul. Kolejowa 8, Warszawa
Tickets: 25 zł at the door

Thanks to Łukasz Jakubowicz for the info.

Purple fantasy camp

Flyer for the Purple RnR Fanrasy Camp, March 2-5, 2017

Ian Paice, Steve Morse and Glenn Hughes will take part in the Purple themed Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp that will take place in Hollywood, California, on March 2-5, 2017.

The idea behind Rock and Roll Fantasy Camps is to “give the public the experience of living the life of a Rock Star, with Rock Stars, for a few days, and gain their knowledge along the way”.

This camp will include jams and master classes with the three stars, along with ‘camp councelors’ that list Vinny Appice and Joel Hekstra in their ranks, among other equally accomplished musicians. The camp concludes with the grand finale of Glenn Hughes performing at the Whisky A Go Go.

Living the life of a rock star doesn’t come cheap, and packages vary from $799 for a groupie (access to meet and greets, master classes, and a ticket to Whisky A Go Go) to $7749 for a headline/recording one (private jam with Paicey, Steve and Glenn, performing live with Glenn at the Whisky A Go Go, 8 hour studio session with a yet unnamed ‘famed producer’, plus the kitchen sink). And that does not include accommodation.

The packages are now on sale with early bird discounts before November 1. Tickets to the Whisky a Go Go show might probably be also available separately at some point in the future.

Any further questions can be resolved by either visiting www.rockcamp.com or contacting Monica Michaels at (888) 762-2263 ext. 7 or monica@rockcamp.com.
