Rainbow - Memories in Rock cover art mockup

There has been no official announcement yet (as far as we know), but some online retailers started listing release of a new Rainbow live recording. Presumably the one recorded the tree dates in June this year. Titled Memories in Rock — Live in Germany, it is apparently scheduled for release on November 18 via Edel / Eagle Rock. Formats listed are: 2CD, DVD, 3DVD+CD (?), Blu-ray, and 3LP.

Celosia Caracas and DIY Starship

In today edition of the semi-irregular Trainspotting addendum, we are proud to present you with two items.

First on the menu is a flowering garden plant called Celosia Caracas as its Deep Purple® cultivar.

Deep Purple® Celosia Caracas

And then there is this:
Roden Boeing 720 model in Starship One livery

It’s a DIY 1:144 scale model kit of Boeing 720 in Starship One livery.

From the manufacturer’s website:

In 1973 famous former American actor and singer Bobby Sherman together with his manager Ward Sylvester, co-owners of artists agency Contemporary Entertainment, purchased the plane from United Airlines with the intent of converting it into a convenient and comfortable ‘flying hotel’ for effecting flights between cities and out of the country by various artists. The music industry during this period was at its peak – a considerable number of performers of all styles of music plied their trade on numerous tours of the territory of the USA, and without any particular financial drawbacks the considerable fees received by them for concerts at that time allowed them to rent the plane for fast and comfortable travel from city to city.

The plane was used by Deep Purple on their US tours in 1974 and 1975, and by led Zeppelin in 1973 and 1975, among other bands.

Both Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin logo decals are included. There is also an Elton John edition as well as another Zep one, called Caesar´s Chariot, used in 1977.

On a third cup of decaf

Ian Gillan; photo © Jim Rakete; image courtesy of kayos ProductionsIan Gillan recently spoke to AntiHero Magazine, with proceeds of the interview posted a few days ago. The interview appears to have been arranged to promote the Gillan vinyl box. The slightly offbeat conversation turned to the new Purple album about halfway through, when Big Ian mentioned that he “heard it for the first time yesterday” (final mix, presumably). He proceeded to elaborate the creative process:

I just wondered then as it immediately leads me on to the next question. Do you have to write in a particular mindset for Deep Purple or for yourself? Do you have to approach writing in different forms, different ways?

Yes, absolutely. Deep Purple was different than any other kind of writing I do with other people. Deep Purple is primarily an instrumental band. Primarily an instrumental band and the routine is, we book a running finish in 10 days, generally in a studio somewhere and the guys come in at noon. They start jamming and they work till 6 o’clock, take a break at 3 for a cup of tea and then do that every day. Roger and I listen to the music and clock out the occasional bit and think that might be okay for a tune on the album or something. Then we start refocusing on making arrangements and how to develop the song. Then when it is all tucked away I start thinking about the lyrics and the tunes. There is no point before they get literally torn up every day because everything changes every day. There’s no shortage of things to write about lyrically. There is no point trying to create a tune on something that’s going to change in a couple of hours. That’s how it worked with Purple. This is primarily an instrumental band. I just climb on board and write it along.

He also mentioned that he “heard [the album is] coming out in February”.

Read the whole thing in the AntiHero Magazine.

The Deep Purple beer

More of the Purple trainspotting today, this time of the brewed variety. Empire Brewing Company from Syracuse, NY, is releasing their Deep Purple beer in bottles for “statewide sales” (New York state, presumably). Apparently there is no connection to the band, and the beer got its name from one of its main ingredients — Concord grapes (yup, Reinheitsgebot be damned). Said grapes give the brew a distinctly purplish hue. The beer itself is based on a pilsner and is described as “fruity, tart & dry, w/ a dark purple color & huge grape aroma”.

BCC may or may not tour

Black Country Communion; photo: © 2012 Christie Goodwin http://www.christiegoodwin.com/

Classic Rock has a few quotes from Glenn Hughes, the gist of which boils down to that he will be busy touring with his solo album, consequently Black Country Communion might not be touring after the new album is released.

I have no idea whether there will be a tour from BCC. There may well be a chance of that but at this point I’m not going to speculate as, being the mouthpiece of BCC, last time it was me that took a beating from the trolls when it didn’t happen.

I’m so proud of Resonate and it certainly has legs – I’m going to spend a year touring it around the world. It’s looking like I will play three tours of America in 2017. I’m going everywhere.

Thanks to Team Rock for the info.

“When I lived back in fifteen hundreds…”

Ritchie Blackmore’s interview that he gave to Radio Veronica (and was teased online a few weeks ago) has been now posted in its entirety. It is more entertaining rather than informative, owing that to the very dry sense of humour of said gentleman.
