King Arthur, followed by Motörhead

Gillan has also recently appeared on The Strange Brew Podcast. In the fairly short (for these days) interview, a lot of ground has been covered — from his upcoming Talking Gib’rish tour to the Javelins, and many things in between.

Gillan is looking…. ehhh… in good shape… ready to meet the day.. LOL

    Uwe Hornung says:

I like Ian’s new out-of-bed look. It’s what I always say, stay active even at old age!

Again a mention of Elvis as his pivotal influence …

He’s really beginning to alienate Karin with it. 🙂‍↕️

In their post-Bolin era, James Gang did a nice version of it.

    Fla76 says:

One thing worth noting is that, for forty years, everyone had forgotten that Ian Gillan was the original voice of *Jesus Christ Superstar*; in recent years, however, it has become a recurring topic in the questions put to him.

    Scott W says:

I think Ian is getting hairstyling tips from Simon.

  5. 5
    MacGregor says:

After a little while, Ian must have thought ‘I had better tidy up a little’ he he he. Or maybe someone else suggested that. I have noticed a couple of old rockers appearing like that over recent years, Roger Waters for one. I guess it doesn’t matter after a while, or does it? It also doesn’t appear that any Vodka or even Gin is on display there in the back ground. Cheers.

Come to my house, Flavio, the discussion “Ian Gillan vs Ted
Neeley” has never stopped in the last twenty years between my wife and me! 😂 Not all wimmen are as reasonable as Karin, Edith is a supporter of this Yank surrogate musical singer and so far all my attempts at converting her have failed.

    Uwe Hornung says:

My kids would describe Ian’s general appearance in that vid as unfiltered by societal expectations, at least that is what they always say about me. 😂

As an octogenarian you’re allowed to sleep a bit during the day and maybe rise a little late for the video call to check your hair first. 😌 It’s all good, I very much prefer it to the tons of camera makeup DC would sport in his podcasts.

When your hair starts receding, their really isn’t much you can do about it. I should know ! 😖

    Uwe Hornung says:

My kids find my habit of opening the door at home in my underwear “noteworthy”. 🤣 Whenever I don’t, their reaction is Oh, you’re wearing something today!

when talking about his schedule, is it a misunderstanding on my part, or does it sound like Purple has more studio work planned?

  11. 11
    Uwe Hornung says:

That has come from a couple of inner-band sources by now, ze Pürps have a writing session scheduled for early next year, they want to record another album in 2027!

#8: Didn’t Blackmore get a hair transplant? Sometime in the Rainbow days?

  14. 14
    timi bottoms says:

@ 13, yes Frater, indeed he did get a hair transplant back in Rainbow because his hair was thinning. Now a days they use hair extensions, which look incredibly real.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Frater, always address your questions on men’s beauty and sartorial elegance to me directly, bitte!

Transplant, weave, hair piece or wig – hair “enhancement” and “restoration” in any case. It happened first in mid1977, in 1976/early1977, Ritchie still had his (progressing) widow’s peak that had become more and more apparent in late Mk II and Mk III as well as early Rainbow which gave him that unique, slightly nasty and sinister Lee Van Cleef look (which I loved).

When I saw Rainbow in Munich in October 1977 for the second time (first time had been a year earlier in Frankfurt when he had still looked like this:

it was among Ritchie’s first appearances on German soil with the new slightly girlish fringe/bangs style,

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f0/Ritchie_Blackmore_1977.jpg?utm_source=en.wikipedia.org&utm_campaign=index&utm_content=thumbnail_unscaled ,

it made him look quite different though he wasn’t coiffeured to perfection that night having been raced to the gig via car (too much fog to fly) from Austrian pre-trial detention in faraway Vienna for his booted altercation with the head – ouch! – of an over-eager bouncer/hall manager there. His hair was a bit greasy and not its usual washed-and-blowdryed-for-the-gig full fluffiness (you tell me, back then I had to wash my hair – long enough to reach my nipples – everyday too). But the iconic Geheimratsecken had gone/been hidden.

What you see in the LLRnR (released 1978) era vids and the drawing on the album cover all shows Ritchie in hair-augmented mode.

BRAVO, a German teen mag devoured back then by a not yet mature young Danish girl initial(l)ed KV for its broad Ian Gillan coverage and general adolescent sex tips, was the type of publication to not let such things go unnoticed and mentioned in a picture caption in an article about the Munich gig that Ritchie had gotten “a hair transplant in America”.

And there the hairs must rest.

(As Jon Lord would have told you: Ritchie was obsessed with the amount (or dearth) of his hair as far back as 1968, spending endless time to get his then bouffant hairdo just right, the hairdo Ian and Roger would secretly laugh about when they first met him as it was by then viewed as heavily out of style in hip London.)

PS: Tony Iommi might do his silly men’s perfumes, but Ritchie invests wisely!

According to Bob Daisley in his book FOR FACTS SAKE he and Ritchie went out shopping for a hairpiece(wig) during his time in the band.

    https://bobdaisley.com/for-facts-sake

His hair changed since. No idea if he got totally bald or not.
During SBTE he had curly hair for instance.

In 1990 dressed in a white and black , sitting on a coucht next to JLT he looked better than ever.

I always felt that was Candice her impact.

Blackmore, unlike Gillan, was always image conscious and tried to dress up for the part.

I always resisted dying my hair or going into wigs.
I like NATURAL but I am sour about the long gone past of my best days.

Was surprised to see him in a tanktop early 70 s in Berlin. 1970 or 1971

I loved his white leather jacket during SBTE, The green one in 87 not so….
