A mild-mannered chap

A classic Purple interview with Ritchie Blackmore, conducted by Chris Welch and originally published in Melody Maker on September 26, 1970:

When Deep Purple smashed up their equipment on a TV show recently, there were howls of protest throughout the land. A flood of complaints hit MM’s Mailbag, and there were rumbles of discontent from Caithness to Beccles.

Chief among the targets for abuse is Purple guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, a mild-mannered, dark-haired chap who occasionally sets fire to his amplifier.

(Don’t you love the British sense of humour?)

What did he think of all this controversy?

“Well, it’s better than nothing,” he smiled slightly, sipping tea. “The TV show from the South Bank just didn’t go off as well as we expected. It was a tele-recording, and they cut out some of our numbers and just showed the climax, which was annoying. Apparently the sound was bad and everything was cut to pieces. We just did our usual stage act and it didn’t come off. But so what? If we want to do itโ€”we will. We’ll be changing our stage act completely soon. A lot of people have seen it nowโ€”especially reporters.”

Ritchie talked about his early influences: “I used to idolize Les Paul and Wes Montgomery. But it’s more of a challenge for me to play rock than jazz, and control a 200-watt amplifier. Sure rock is harder to play than jazz. You see, rock is so limited. In jazz, you can play anything. I don’t think there is a single guitarist who has MASTERED rock guitar playing.”

Read the whole interview at Wolfgang’s Vault.

We have previously featured the Southbank Summer footage discussed in the interview. Sadly, it’s no longer available on YouTube, but will be included on the upcoming History, Hits & Highlights 1968-76 2 DVD set to be released in June.

Thanks to Jim Collins for spotting the interview.

With Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple was a rock’n roll band.

With Steve Morse, Deep Purple was ‘only’ a rock band.

Rock’n roll for me is something entertaining(not only musically), unpredictable, rough, sometimes stupid and sometimes genius, out of law, full of surprises, and anything regardless of what the music means itself.

CG, it will be something new when Morse stop playing Blackmores riffs, and DP become recognizable without In Rock………… The Battle Rages On (including early work with MK I) ๐Ÿ™‚ Come on man ๐Ÿ™‚ Don’t hate Ritchie! He’s one of DP essencial pillars – No Ritchie, no DP as we love it!

How may times has this interview ‘reared its head’?

What happens this days if he cant get in tune, or he gets a ‘ladder’ in his tights??? Not sure if ‘smashing up’ his lute would have the same effect…….

Admins expect a certain reaction, I suppose.

This is again what I call triggering a certain debate amongst us.
    BY THEM.

This is not to say they should appreciate behaviour that goes beyond a certain ethical edge….
Ofcourse, it is often very questionable where that edge begins or starts.

It probably will come up again and again and again…..

But hey, one way or the other, direct or indrect HIS NAME will arouse emotional responses.

To me and many many others it is EVIDENT why that happens.

    In the meantime

Try to have some fun, hopefully not too much at expense of others
And please cut the crap concerning someones so called sexuality, his hair and what is there more to write about in a NON funny way.

But maybe it is very difficult to draw the line.

Often talking gets mixed with a lot speculation.
Is it bad or forbidden to discuss and wonder if Ian Gillan is ill or WHY he does sing badly at certain, ahem, times?

Is it wrong to say and repeat that I , I always try to be honest with myself, am not able , after years of trying,to approve of a certain choice the rest of DP made?

Ofcourse, you can blame me for repetition and that, OMG, I should only write positive stuff.
I suppose that should mean that most of what is being written here has to stop because it has been said before.

But isnt it very interesting that loads of people, it is very clear that I m not the only one who misses him dearly, go on writing their feelings about this subject?

    It says a lot
And, IMHO, much more interesting than the zillionth review of a show with sort of the same setlist and someone who does not go beyond the surface and only saying how great it was.

Ofcourse, to each their own…..to borrow a line often used by a certain Southerner hehehe, there are loads of people who havew not gone through many years of experiencing gigs, and get authentically enthusiastic.
    WHY NOT?!

The same I can say about them does not get impressed that easily and REMEMBER something different.

Which does not have to mean that are living in teh past or something like that.
I think CHANGE as a phenomena is overrated too.

    Goodday to ya all.

Where and when did I ever say I “hate Ritchie?” Point it out to me…

This is just such an old article it does nothing in the way of the now, for me anyway, proabably because I have the MM it was published in! I was speaking sarcastically, btw, where is this “Ritchie” person, last I heard he was carted off by some little bimbo over a decade ago and has not been seen nor heard in his true light since.lol!

You’re pretty snappy with your insinuations…. not sure whats up with that, perhaps some work on it might help.

Thanks for your opinion once again though, talk about “repetition.”

  15. 15

  17. 17

In a few cases there has been tremendous change

No I did not do a make over or something like that

But I ll let you know, ok?

RITCHIE BLACKMORE is a nice chappy!!!

  22. 22
    Crimson Ghost says:

    @20

So then what does your whining like a ‘bitch’ constitute as far as tou’re concerned, huh?

    Figure you out?
Don’t flatter yourself, people just call them as they see them and thats your fault.(Mr. Misterious are we now?)

Ritchie Blackmore ‘can’ be a ‘nice chappy’ depending on how may times you’ve met him and witnessed his behavior around people… speaking from personal experience, are you?

  23. 23
    Crimson Ghost says:

“y” sorry, must have been your finger. lol!

  24. 24
    Gary says:

Ritchie explained what he did and why he did it in a 30+ year old interview. So what ? Instead of criticizing the man who made Deep Purple a world class rock band, and influenced generations of guitarists from his 40 year career, on records selling well over 100 MILLION albums…ah, forget it ! Wasted words.

Ritchie Blackmore deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in his own right as a guitarist. Ritchie’s music led to offshoot bands from even Deep Purple and Rainbow that also sold
MILLIONS of records copying HIS style.

  25. 25
    Crimson Ghost says:

Are there any facts there? Your opinion doesn’t establish anything, it’s entertaining though.

Who the hell is ‘criticizing’ Blackmore?
This person must be held accountable.lol!

  26. 26
    Gary says:

You want facts, CG ? Fair enough. The DPAS credits Purple with over 100 million records sold. Rainbow probably sold several million. Deep Purple blossomed with IN ROCK, a singer Ritchie. Jon, and Ian chose…leading to Mk 2. Following me, CG ? Mk 2 established themselves as a WORLD-CLASS rock band.
No need to discuss the influence of SOTW, is there ? Then there’s Mk 3. Coverdale and Hughes chosen by RITCHIE, Jon, and Ian.
As you know Ritchie left after Stormbringer, deciding on ELF singer RONNIE JAMES DIO ( now a superstar in his own right…Imagine if Ronnie wasn’t in Rainbow…) Coverdale formed Whitesnake. If he wasn’t chosen by Purple ( mainly Ritchie ) do you think…Are you getting my point ?

Guitarists are on record citing Ritchie Blackmore as a MAIN infuence: Eddie Van Halen, Iron Maiden ( who jammed with Purple )

I won’t go into the minutae such as OTR, HTP, and….

  27. 27
    Crimson Ghost says:

Wow, a wealth of facts there, I stand informed indeed! lol!

Come on… no brainer facts do not apply!lol!

Thanks for the effort though, I do see where you’re coming from, but how does this mean I criticize anyone?

Like and follow whoever you wish, who cares?
Tell when Ritchie’s next gig with Purple or someone besides his wife is, and I’ll be there. In the meantime, keep watching paint dry while you wait for that to happen, but at least embelish it with some of his great back catalog playing while you’re at it…. works for me!lol!

    Welcome to 2009!

  28. 28

  34. 34
    metaljim says:

    Rasmus,

It makes me sorry I even pointed out the article to you guys in the first place. A simple reprint of an old article starts the same old mudslinging all over again. I should have learned by now.

  35. 35
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

I must state here that even though the article is Deep Purple related, it comes across as though there is nothing New in the works for subject matter. I (and I’m sure many others)offered and were denied many more current subjects that believe me, are more relevant than this reprint of a 30 year old article. I am not criticizing This Article by any means. For those whom never read it, it is worth the read for sure. But then that opens the door for a million other re-prints to be copied and offered. Hell, maybe that should be a totally separate Chapter in THS. An Archive place for folks to offer reprints of old Purple Articles and interviews.

metaljim: I am not taking a pot shot at you. On the contrary. I find it worthy that you went through the trouble to break it down and send it in. Kudos….

But, posting it?????? Who’s in charge here?

    Priest,

I am everything you think I am and less, no arguing that, so please stop carrying on as if I object to your opinion of me.
(whatever it takes to get through to you)

  38. 38
    HZ says:

CG, no insinuations, just answered on your question will there be something new? Only those who deem themselves above others may use sarcasm in everyday conversation, my friend, and you use it whenever Ritchie is mentioned – this is from Oxford Dictionary, except last part, that’s my insinuation, or not. Oh, yes, where is Ritchie? Well from my point of view, without sarcasm, he’s doing something new and interesting, and in those days he was like this, what’s the issue, this is DP fan site. Still, when Morse and crew stop playing his riffs we’ll have something new. Hopefully that will be soon.

  42. 42
    Crimson Ghost says:

    @38

Whats your point? I didn’t criticise Ritchie, and you did accuse me of doing so. And then you always follow it up with words of limited wisdom about Morese, just another pot calling the kettle “black.”
So it’s you who needs to shut up and apparantly fast! Show me proof that laughter is ever bad for anyone and I’ll honor that, which would still be opinion and you know that damn well.(I’m not a Ritchie hater, I just don’t fancy his articicial music, okay? But whats up with you and your Morse isues? Hates a habit!)

This business about being above others? Do you have a persecution complex or something? Perhaps it’s best you try your hand with someone else here, it’s not working with me.

    @41
    What are you talking about?
All I do here is share information and express opinion, just like you… who said anything about ownership… the knowledge part I’d say is pretty generous from my end. If thats what you’re talking about… I don’t now what it has to do with anything here though.
(if someone appears to know more about something than you, no matter what it is, do you always react this way?) I could see a problem if I said something like “hey man, I know more than you, you’re of some sort of insignificance because of that” but since I have never done anything remotely close to that, I suspect it’s all in your mind… better go ask Dr.Tracy for a cure.

Keep scowling, the lines on your face from it are already permanant by now so you have nothing to lose. No LOL there, but of course now I’m just an overly serious bastard? Man, the conclusions people leap to… I have never been referred to as too happy, funny how a little ackronym can turn a persons whole image around.

  43. 43

Poor poor CG, many bad words for nothing. That shut up, keep it for your home, OK, not nice way to speak with people – but you can do it, if it’s OK with you. My dear CG, me or you, we are not object on this site, but your sarcasm for any band member, especially Ritchie, give us bad vibration. And sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, also sarcasm is a form of irony that is bitter or cutting, being intended to taunt its target – so don’t use it for man that came with music we are apparently here for it – you are not above him musically, belive me. Oh yes above him – well my CG, that’s what you said, you came with sarcasm in Ritchie context, and OD say about sarcasm: “Only those who deem themselves above others may use sarcasm in everyday conversation” (not my words, I was just wondering), but man, I don’t even know you, and for sure don’t want to hand with you (you are so scary guy ๐Ÿ™‚ ), because I’m not here for you, or you for me. No hate towards Morse (infact I’m a huge fan, wish him to do something new, because he’s capable to do that) – just truth: live he’s playing 80% of Ritchies riffs – if this is DP fan site, at least we deserve not to have sarcasm for Ritchie (Morse isn’t sarcastic about his music) even if you don’t like his latest music. No need for sarcasm, especially from such devoted fan as you. And about laughing, I wasn’t honest with you, that was sarcasm. Peace CG. No hard feelings ๐Ÿ˜‰

  56. 56
    HZ says:

Worshiper, bad word to describe someone who likes certain music style Ritchie came with – well me myself, I’m certainly not his worshiper, just really like his music. It’s sad for me to see that DP fans in fact divide in those who use Gillan’s sarcasm for Ritchie, and those who wants to look at the DP in more wider context. Well, I can understand Gillan, Gillan was Ritchies friend and bandmate, and Gillan is top-notch singer and part of DP’s most famous and most productive and inovative “mark”, he’s our favorite DP singer. Gillan can say anything he wants about Ritchie, they were “married”, and fans will still love them for their music. But someone who’s nothing musically, zero, unknown, to emulate Gillan’s attitude and make of his words litany (I don’t want to aim on anybody personally here, but it’s very obvious that if Ritchie is mentioned we’ll have few nicknames iterate those recognizable words about him, like it’s kind of “Bible”). Anyhow, I don’t mind that, just keeps me don’t understand why is that Ritchie – even if he’s running this medieval mode – so hated, when even today DP with Morse plays 80-90% of his riffs (makes me conclude that Ritchie was great guitarist). Also makes me conclude that there is no much progress in DP, just playing Ritchie’s riffs (even “bad and not good memories about it period” The Battle Rages On). I mean, I understand why Gillan is mad on Ritchie, they are both as two small youngsters to each other, but to see fans acting like that… Well, we just lose good vibration on this site.

    Crimson Ghost says:

HZ, very original… I am the first one to use the phrase “sarcasm is the lowest for of wit” at this website, so you may not even know it, but you got that one from me in the first place. When I mentioned “nothing new” you completely lost the plot! How on earth did I mean it? Certainly not as a jab against Ritchie, and in fact now you’re carrying on like I go around bashing ANY artists here, which I do not do! I’m simply not here to discuss or ‘learn’ about Ritchie Blackmore, is that okay with you?… he is nowhere involved with DP and hasn’t been for over a decade, as you know…. so what does he have to do with anything? That is my sole complaint here, people like you can really misenterpret a persons intentions.

Ritchie Blackmore is the best guitar player I have ever bothered rating, big f’ing deal! There is more to life than that, take a look around! Involve yourself with it, or stay in your little Blackmore cave, be my guest, but don’t tell me how to operate, especially when I didn’t insult Blackmore, I just accept that he is no longer interested in my money and I’ve found it to be all for the better.

  61. 61
    Crimson Ghost says:

You talk to me about ‘good vibrations’ well forget about Ritchie then, because he is a huge factor in why the bad vibes exist. This isn’t the Ritchie Blackmore base station. Get the order of things right! This is a Deep Purple website, Deep Purple continue to thrive as the rock and roll entity they always have been. Ritchie has nothing to do with it anymore, but people like you keep trying to hang on to him as if he ‘still’ has something to do with them. When you learn to separate them, as they have been since 1994, then you will get the big picture. You’re simply being counterporductive and can’t see that. Most conversation here is full of good vibes, then Ritchie gets mentioned and the spirit takes a dive.

This is all because some just can’t handle the loss of Blackmore, and loss breeds hate, are you following? I don’t see why if you’re so hung up on Ritchie, that you can’t involve yourself with his existing career somehow, instead of furthering the battle here, is that spelled out for you enough?

Don’t tal to me about Steve Morse, I didn’t mention him “EITHER!”

I said one little thing in the first post here, and you somehow tie it into all sorts of madness, and that is a mistake that you made, and here we are.

    Pack it in, I say!

    Gary says:

Ritchie Blackmore was the driving force during Deep Purple’s most successful era(s). He didn’t do it alone, however. It took some extraordinary master muscians along with Ritchie to make it happen.

Steve Morse is an excellent guitarist who carries the Purple banner quite well and the band is still a creative force four decades after its founding.

This comment is not directed at anybody in particular…Blackmore’s Night is obviously a different direction for Ritchie. Some people like it, some don’t. That’s ok. But it doesn’t ‘ suck ‘ because it isn’t hellfire guitar playing. It’s just different.
