Hats, socks, and rock’n’roll

If you felt that you don’t own enough copies of Made in Japan or appropriately branded socks, your prayers have been answered. There will be another super deluxe reissue of the iconic live album, this time remixed by Steven Wilson (original stereo album and Dolby Atmos) and Richard Digby Smith (the 3 shows). It will be available as 5CD+Blu-ray and 10LP box sets.
The Steven Wilson remix of the original stereo album may or may not actually be a new one. This is what he said back in 2017:
There are a lot of things Iâve done that have gotten shelved. I mean, Deep Purpleâs Made in Japan (1973) â I did that years ago, and it never came out.
Let’s see what is coming out now.

Official promo blurb:
NEW STEREO AND ATMOS MIXES BY STEVEN WILSON, PLUS NEWLY REMIXED VERSIONS OF ALL THREE JAPAN CONCERTS
EXCLUSIVE VINYL EDITION INCLUDES ALL THE MUSIC ON 10LPSOn August 15, 1972, Deep Purple took the stage in Japan for the first of three shows that would give rise to one of rockâs most celebrated live albums, MADE IN JAPAN.
MADE IN JAPAN (SUPER DELUXE EDITION) features new stereo and Dolby ATMOS mixes of the original by acclaimed producer Steven Wilson, all three concerts newly remixed by Richard Digby Smith, and several rare single edits.
Singer Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, keyboardist Jon Lord, bassist Roger Glover, and drummer Ian PaiceâDeep Purpleâs famed Mk II lineupâturned studio staples like âSmoke On The Water,â âHighway Star,â and âSpace Truckinââ into explosive live statements. âWe came halfway around the world and found the audience singing every word. It was magical,â Glover recalls in the collectionâs liner notes.
The band enlisted engineer Martin Birch â who had worked on several of their best-known studio albums â to record the shows to eight-track tape at Festival Hall in Osaka and the Budokan in Tokyo. The performances on MADE IN JAPAN (SUPER DELUXE EDITION) capture Deep Purple at full throttle, powering through songs from their then-new album Machine Head, along with fan favorites like âChild In Time,â âStrange Kind Of Woman,â and âSpeed King.â The collection also includes rare single edits, like the German version of âBlack Nightâ and the Mexican edit of âSpace Truckinâ.â
The live album garnered widespread critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone declaring it âPurpleâs definitive metal monster, a spark-filled execution of the typical Purple style.â This recognition led to its impressive ranking at No. 6 on their âReadersâ Poll: The 10 Best Live Albums of All Time.â AllMusic also praised the album, stating that âDeep Purple pushed its music into the kind of deliberate excess that made heavy metal what it became.â Additionally, the album achieved commercial success, landing at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Wilson harnesses the raw energy of the original tapes in his new stereo and Atmos mixes. âItâs all completely as it happened on the night,â he says. âThe album has a power and sense of abandon that they never quite captured in the studio. Hopefully this new mix makes it feel even more like youâre there.â
Preorder from the official store or somewhere closer to you. The official store has a variety of bundles and assorted reissue merchandise.
It is scheduled to be released on August 15, 2025 via Universal. There’s no word at this point which label will be releasing it.
The Steve Wilson mix of the Highway Star has been posted on streaming services to whet your appetite. The track also appeared on YouTube, but we are told that availability varies by region and other supernatural phenomena.
Thanks to Nigel Young and Trond StrĂžm for the info.

Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing
I think I’m going to wait to see what others think. I will buy it if it is complete and does not overlap songs (e.g. applause overlapping start of child in time) and missing the end applause and Mr Gillans chant off the end of the mule. Just niggles I know but they grind!
June 18th, 2025 at 18:09Ok!
The returning question is:
Do I really need this?
My bankaccount is quite clear, NO!
But my little foolish heart says: yesâŠ.. guess I can cut down on the coffee⊠no that wonât do! Guess I can cut down on the foodâŠ. Yeah! đđ
June 18th, 2025 at 18:14Someone is taking the piss now !
June 18th, 2025 at 18:42It’s a bit over the top …I don’t think Gillan will be too happy of all this blatant ” ripping fans off ” …What next ? A remix of a remix !?
Hmm..bought it on vinyl, then CD, then the remastered CD, original box set (poor mix) and the remixed box set. Do I need to buy it for a sixth time? No.
June 18th, 2025 at 20:49The single edits are pointless
June 18th, 2025 at 20:49Mortals, I had mentioned in the past that Steven Wilson is sitting on an unreleased MiJ mix, yet you doubted me âŠ
The prophecy âŠ

June 18th, 2025 at 22:59Not surprised this has emerged after the Machine Head one and also because of Steven Wilson’s comments over the years. Why would a remix be left out in the cold? There will be a few punters interested no doubt, well at least one punter here in the commentary department. That collection of yours Uwe, any need of an upgrade at your abode of late? Meaning a total renovation and added building attached to the present one. Maybe you are better off going underground, some sort of hidden crypt to be found in eons to come by mistake from an Archaeological dig. Get Anton involved, oh hang, no don’t get Anton involved. He has been traumatised more than enough with being Gillanised over recent times. The way things are going, it will Edith or the cd collection by the sound of it. Me thinks Edith will win………or perhaps not, he he he. Cheers.
June 18th, 2025 at 23:35Given that
– the Martin Pullan REMIXES of the three individual dates in the boxed set,
– the Martin Pullan REMASTER of the original double album
– the Kevin Shirley REMIX of same
were all avalanched on the market in 2014, i.e. more than a decade ago,
and that
– the Kevin Shirley REMIX of the original double album is meanwhile hard to get and
– so is the boxed set with the Martin Pullan remixes,
I canât get worked up in a negative way about âyet another remix roundâ. Some will buy it, others wonât. Audio remastering and remixing technology develops in leaps and bounds, you will hear a difference.
Bring it on then! I can think of DP 70s albums that are more needy of a remix (i.e. The Concerto, In Rock and Fireball), but MIJ is a consistent seller, it went platinum in Germany (and was #1 for several weeks) with 500.000 sold, that is pretty stellar for a double live album (sales in all other European countries were only around the 100.000 mark individually or less, only the US sales in the much larger market there were higher with one million).
June 19th, 2025 at 04:51Hmmm, however, it was Digby-Smith who remixed to the very mediocre sounding “Live at Last” recording which was included in Black Sabbath’s Vol 4 Super Deulxe Box Set. That made an enormous difference on that occasion. But thaisis not the same is it? Remixing an inferior production is fine, laudable even, but what is the object here? Apart from the financial one that is.
June 19th, 2025 at 06:42No way. For the next reissue of this album, if someone actually sees the sense in having the 3 complete concerts in the original running order, even if this means 2 CDs per concert, then I would go for it. I mean, CD5 in this set is a bit silly.
June 19th, 2025 at 07:54Milking it!!
June 19th, 2025 at 10:46I bought the last one, which was sold as the final, definitive ever ever ever.
If I somehow win a free copy then I will get it. ):
June 19th, 2025 at 11:10I will buy just as long is not a million dollars.
June 19th, 2025 at 11:52@6 Is that your God complex again đ€Ł it shows how the passage of time accelerates as we get older. Canât believe the Shirley/Pullen set was 10 years ago! To my mind that fixed all the issues with the previous 1993 box set. That said if it makes the greatest album of all time available to newbieâs to the mighty Purple then itâs all good- but I wonât be buying it!
June 19th, 2025 at 11:52You know what? As long as they keep on repackaging, reissuing und rewhatever the historic product of our heroes, then that is a good thing. I prefer it infinitely to permanent deletion from the catalog. Itâs preserving DP as a cultural artifact from a time when dinosaur rock (of which DP were progenitors, no point denying it) ruled the Earth. I donât care if someone makes a buck off it, I live in permanent fear of physical media for music being ended altogether. And releases like these here are certainly more aimed at glistening discs and vinyl collectors than streamers.
And Iâm not even the greatest MiJ fan (anymore), itâs the one Purple album I have perhaps âheard to deathâ a little, maybe because for a time it was the only live product DP had before they started releasing all the other live offerings post-split. The performances on MiJ can of course not be faulted, as a band they were at a peak in tightness and professionalism plus that extra-ingredient of elated frenzy playing for the first time in a for them exotic location like Japan.
The new remix will at least âforceâ me to revisit it once again! đ€
June 19th, 2025 at 12:17I don’t need it.
June 19th, 2025 at 13:09I don’t really see the need to buy this. After all doesn’t everyone have several versions of Made In Japan by now? If they included a live recording of a show from a few weeks before this or after this that had never been release before then I would be on board. This really doesn’t offer anything we all don’t already have.
June 19th, 2025 at 15:43Just listening on the crappy ‘puter speakers at work, but the Drums seem snappier. And the Bass jumps out, sometimes too much me thinks.
At what point can things get mixed too clearly, Especially on a live album?
June 19th, 2025 at 16:16Maybe I missed something in the ” excitement” of yet another remix of this fantastic album but why are there 2 “Black Night” versions from CD 5 Live At Budokan, one being 4:57 and the other being 9:57? I confess to buying the previous box remix best ever version of MIJ but it only have 3 Black Nights – does that mean I have to buy this new one to complete the collection until the next one comes out?
June 19th, 2025 at 16:22By the way, where can I get those MIJ socks?
Just having a listen to the link via Spotify through my Bluetooth speaker at a reasonably loud volume.
Iâm not sure if itâs my ears, the device, Spotify or what, but the drums and Bass sound too high in the sound mix, while Guitar seems a tad buried. Slightly reminiscent of the last few Metallica albums, with drums mixed on the high side.
I may have to listen again a few times before making a decision to part with my hard earned moolah.
By the way, re- Uwe, was that you posting on the Status Quo forum very recently, regarding the new Live! Box set? I take it youâre very impressed?
June 19th, 2025 at 17:05Re #13: There are (I think) 3 “Single Edits” included in this set. I think that I read that on the official DP Site.
June 19th, 2025 at 17:30âAnd the bass jumps out, sometimes too much me thinks.â
There is no such concept, Jerry. Perish the thought. đ There are only two stages of bass loudness: âjust enoughâ and âeven betterâ, trust me.
June 19th, 2025 at 17:33it’s true. with a simple smartphone I could feel the bass pumping hard… but I don’t want to get used to it.. no thanks
June 19th, 2025 at 20:26Whoops, I meant Re # 19 for Gary on the Single Edit comment.
And I know where you are coming from Uwe. I am one of those guys yelling “More Bass” at shows, because they normally need it! But sometimes, isn’t it possible to just have too much of a good thing? (He asked, already guessing what the answer will be……)
June 19th, 2025 at 21:41@ 15 -Uwe’s PR for the record company, classic. How much Uwe, come on, a little commission surely, he he he. That is what this is all about. 10 % or even less? Fan adoration, heroes, it’s all there folks.
“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends, so glad you could attend, come inside come inside. There behind a glass stands a real blade of grass, be careful as you pass Move along! Move along!
Come inside, the show’s about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you’ll get your money’s worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell, or Earth
[Chorus]
June 19th, 2025 at 22:54You’ve got to see the show, it’s a dynamo
You’ve got to see the show, it’s rock and roll
âBy the way, re- Uwe, was that you posting on the Status Quo forum very recently, regarding the new Live! Box set? I take it youâre very impressed?â
Guilty as charged, Allen, the âUweâ there and the âUwe Hornungâ here are one and the same guy. Yeah, LIVE! is to Quonuts what MIJ is to Purpleristas, the effing holy grail. I like the remix and the fact that they have now released all three nights. If that sounds faintly familiar, I wouldnât even be surprised if Quo took that from the MIJ rule book, you know play three nights with the exact same set in short order and pick the best renditions for a live double album.
To the chagrin of Francis Rossi, both Alan Lancaster and Rick Parfitt watched very closely what DP were doing in the first half of the 70s and carried over ideas and inspiration. Maybe they thought it would be cool for Quo to have their own MIJ – raw with no post-gig clean-ups in the studio. Rossi would scoff at that in later decades, saying it was a silly thing NOT to do as, according to him âeverybody else did it tooâ, he winces at the occasional bum notes on LIVE! But then he didnât share Rickâs and Alanâs enthusiasm for DP, who even went to see them live at one point. Rossi doesnât really like heavy rock or metal, there was always tension about that in Quo, with Lancaster and Parfitt pulling the other way.
June 20th, 2025 at 01:01Is it Gillan who vetoes the releases of MK 3 concerts?
June 20th, 2025 at 06:39Re the bass being too violent – maybe everything falls into place when itâs played in a proper stereo?!
June 20th, 2025 at 06:45I didn’t know I would need this. Until yesterday. Watch Phil Ashton and Now Spinning magazine on the new remix, and you will get convinced. I did and I got.
June 20th, 2025 at 07:13Yes, Uncle Phil with his lovely childrenâs show moderator voice is already at it, kiddies!

I know that populist record company bashing is en vogue and that some people seem to (re)discover their anti-capitalist leanings whenever a new fancy DP product is released, thank you Herr MacGregor. You wonât hear me chiming in on this, I adore capitalismâs ability to stamp new product out of the ground (we can discuss improvement of distribution of wealth some other time), for the last 50 years I have bought every officially available DP product gratefully, Iâll stop when my cold dead hands wonât allow me to press âBUYâ anymore. Iâm an unabashed DP & Family consumer, stone me.
If anything, I regret that they are not bringing out more stuff like this. Forgive me for preferring a MIJ with nano-0ptimized and upgraded sound to the low-fi charms of another GILLAN release, Iâm from Germany, we like it when things work well.
June 20th, 2025 at 12:51No one seems to notice that Ianâs voice is louder on the new mix and more to the foreground, Edith (and Karin!) will be thoroughly pleased. I will hear no more âWhy isnât his voice louder?â when I put this on rotation at home. đ
June 20th, 2025 at 13:42Henrik @27: Why should IG give a ratâs ass about that one way or another? I rule out that he even has a say, but if he did, he certainly wouldnât use it to veto anything. He sees Mk III as something remote, but inherently irrelevant for the âliving breathing DPâ and it is: availability of Mk III product has no impact on Mk IXâ business operations and media status.
I believe that record companies have let Mk III product fall a little by the wayside because the whole Mk III era is not regarded as commercially viable as material featuring Mk II members – you could say that over the decades and through sheer persistence Ian Gillan has finally asserted lasting supremacy.
And one other thing is that Simon Robinson is no longer a driving force for releases of vintage Purple Family material – he had a very catholic approach and no Mk II bias, that benefited a general release policy that also took a look at the more exotic regions of the Purple Universe.
But I would like to see those gigs released too – remixed, in complete fashion and in a worthy box (yes, Herr MacGregor, the record company just instructed me to write this, I will get a percentage cut from the sales as I always do ⊠đ°đ”đžđ€).
June 20th, 2025 at 14:15@15. At least thatâs cleared up the god question. The supreme being could never tire of his/hers* greatest creation.
*delete as per your personal preference
June 20th, 2025 at 16:53No shame, Raja, it’s called PAS (Purple Acquisition Syndrome) and it is hereditary and incurable.
Those who battle it, defy nature.
June 20th, 2025 at 17:36Having listened to it again: Jon and Ritchie are still “the wrong way around” …
(i.e. as they were on the original MIJ, but not how you saw them on stage, i.e. Jon left and Ritchie right), but you do get a lot more pick noise from Roger’s Ric, brilliant! Es schmatzt göttlich gegen die Saiten …
But do not despair, you can always turn your headphones or earbuds the wrong way too … two wrongs can make a right sometimes. đ€Ł
PS: Roger has fans from council estates in West Bromwich …

âI was always a big Deep Purple fan â I loved all those original albums and listened to them a lot. I remember sitting in Kenâs [K.K. Downingâs] flat, listening to Deep Purple In Rock, and being blown away. I was always incredibly impressed with Rogerâs bass work, and it was influential to me.”
âI have a tremendous amount of respect for him. I ran into him recently after not seeing him for a while; catching up with him was incredible. Roger is a true icon, and Deep Purple are incredible.â

June 20th, 2025 at 19:18@ 35- thanks for the Ian Hill article Uwe, enjoyed that and yes, his influences are grand. No Geezer though, but then again Geezer’s influences are very much the same in many aspects. Especially Jack Bruce and John Entwistle and Jaco too if I am remembering correctly. Cheers.
June 20th, 2025 at 22:56All I heard was more bass at the start…ill reserve judgement till I hear the whole thing …but, I still think it’s a rip off
June 20th, 2025 at 23:11The label is Rhino!

June 21st, 2025 at 13:50Iâve always held that there is something Purplish in Priest – itâs no coincidence that their music so immediately appealed to me when I first heard Sin After Sin in 1977, one year after the Purple split. The first song I heard of them – standing with headphones in a department store (QUELLE in Darmstadt) with a music section – was this here:
https://youtu.be/W5Opvi_UHLY
A few seconds into the track it reminded me of a riff that could have featured on In Rock, there were parallels to Flight Of The Rat (my favorite track on In Rock next to the ubiquitous CIT). Of course the Martin Birch-inspired Roger Glover production triggered all kinds of fuzzy-warm feelings too, I was immediately smitten. The way Simon Philipps played the drums echoed Little Ian as well, those were obviously not John Bonham type drums.
And I wasnât alone, early Judas Priest had automatically applied the âDeep Purple resurrected – sans Jon Lordâ-stamp to them by German critics. Or, in a pun on In Rock, âDeep Purple in Lederâ once they had raided a few gay shops for their new sartorial image. đ
June 21st, 2025 at 14:33Happy Birthday to me and Don! đ„
June 21st, 2025 at 15:09Right on the spot @ 18.
Remixing the Remix ?! Come on!
The original double vinyl version is a masterpiece.
…the first taste of this insanely rough, enjoyable and powerful playing by the Mark II for me was the 24 Carat Purple compilation album. I purchased that album in 1981. ThatÂŽs when I moved on to other kind of music from listening to Stray Cats (marvellous band, also). I just donÂŽt remember whatÂŽs the running time for itsÂŽversion of Black Night, but what a version ! And if IÂŽm right, that originally was only available on a single?
And, at some point in later years I did get the chance to purchase the 1993 box of all the original three concerts. What a joy that was, too. And is still today, of course.
The socks? A taste of that Ritchie-like british, dark humour, I guess.
: )
Greetings from the Land of Midnight Sun
(… just right now thereÂŽs no rain…)
PS.
June 21st, 2025 at 15:51Uwe – ever considered to write a book on DP? You really seem to be an expert.
@27. No. They have no control over the pre reunion releases
June 21st, 2025 at 17:10Well,the word “Overkill’ comes to mind.
June 21st, 2025 at 22:45I won’t buy it.I’m sure all this sonic wizardry would be missed by my aging ears, Besides,I couldn’t justify taking a week to listen to it all.
Why should there be a finality with any particular mix of MIJ? That is like saying an exhibition of the works of a certain artist is a final one and that there shall never be another one curating his work differently or throwing another light on his oeuvre. Any museum making such a claim would be regarded as presumptuous.
Every new remaster and remix throws a new light on DPâs original core work – five guys making a hell of a racket. I find that interesting every time anew. And remaster and remixing technology keeps developing, back in 1993 we were all happy about the three CD version of Live In Japan, but if you listen to it today that same mix is hilariously drum-heavy, so much it sounds like a demonstration record by Ludwig drums.
âŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ..
Hiza, this forum is full of experts and a lot of people know more than me about certain areas of DPâs history. Iâve just been doing it for a while (since 1975) and – correct me if Iâm wrong – my interest in the band as a musical phenomenon is perhaps a bit more encompassing and historical-dots -connecting than of most other DP enthusiasts, especially as regards what DP members did BEFORE they joined the band. There are a lot of people here who have never heard a Trapeze album in their life (and never will) because Glenn Hughesâ bass playing is frankly Irrelevant to them or even a source of irritation to the extent it dares stray from what Roger did before.
I donât have a single line-up that eclipses all others for me, sure, Mk II is the most significant line-up in terms of establishing a template and also the one where DP was most locked in with the Zeitgeist (Mk III was a mid 70s stadium rock behemoth, but not really culturally cutting edge anymore), but I love Come Taste The Band and do not consider Slaves & Masters a musical catastrophy though Joe Lynn Turnerâs voice doesnât grab me like IGâs, DCâs, GHâs, Graham Bonnetâs or Rob Halfordâs.
If you asked me which ex- or current DP member I would like to have dinner with, Iâd probably say Tommy Bolin (he would certainly be the one I would look forward to jamming with the most, along with Little Ian) though Tommy wasnât really very good (or often too stoned) to talk about his music in a meaningful way. He saw the world with a childlike wonder, that was both his charm and his downfall. That right there – having Tommy Bolin for dinner – disqualifies me as a âseriousâDP fan in the eyes of many people here. đ€Ł
My history of DP would likely be a rather thick, ungainly coffee table book with all its Peter Frame rock family tree references and also contain quite a few heretical views and statements anathema to conventional Purple wisdom. And Iâm sure Iâd make as many factual mistakes as other well-intentioned DP biographers.
But thanks!
June 21st, 2025 at 23:14@46 – “And remaster and remixing technology keeps developing, back in 1993 we were all happy about the three CD version of Live In Japan, but if you listen to it today that same mix is hilariously drum-heavy, so much it sounds like a demonstration record by Ludwig drums.” Hooray to that too, drums to the fore indeed and as Cozy said, ‘the drums are back’. Finally, some common sense in all this from Uwe, and that is coming from a bass guitarist. Still, at least he is in touch with the engine room, sort of. Regarding ‘having dinner’ with Tommy Bolin. As you said Uwe, that would depend on how out of it he was at the time. Some drugs give people the munchies, others the exact opposite can apply. Also the level of communication and the topic would vary no doubt, it might be you doing all the talking. Hang on, something very similar is going on here, he he he……………sorry old son, as always, I just couldn’t resist! Cheers.

Yes, Stray Cats were a great rockabilly band and Brian Setzer plays a pretty mean guitar.
One of my favorite Stray Cats tunes is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCTbq4EByQU
Karin, don’t bother with this one. I’m sure you won’t like the subject matter. đ But if you do, and don’t understand the title, I’ll gladly explain.

A Velvet Elvis is a painting of Elvis Presley on a velvet canvas. You can find them for sale in every border-town along the US-Mexico border. They are considered the epitome of kitsch.

June 22nd, 2025 at 20:35@ 48 – Interesting that the Stray Cats ‘Elvis on Velvet’ song was around the same time as Living Colour’s. A coincidence perhaps or was there something in the water at that early 1990’s time. Was Elvis seen at a Danish shopping mall looking for Karin. The mind boggles. Cheers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IiztV-9lAuk&list=RDIiztV-9lAuk&start_radio=1
of things I’m comparing
– Martin Pullan’s 2014 REMASTER with
– the 2014 Deluxe REMIX of MIJ by the so often here unjustly derided Kevin Shirley:
– There is nothing wrong with the Martin Pullan Remaster, it sounds like a glossed up version of what we all know and love from the vinyl days. Does what it say on the tin, an excellent remaster. It was always a good-sounding album, even though only eight-track, especially given how it is live and undoctored plus comes from two different venues and three different nights.
– The Kevin Shirley Remix sounds surprisingly “more live” than the original stereo mix: It is grittier, more massive (sub-lows!) everything – voice AND instruments – is more direct and immediate. Part of that has to do with the use of compression of course: While Kevin is often attacked as a brutal “brickwaller” he stands by his view that a certain amount of compression, if used in the correct way, benefits heavier music. I tend to agree with him. This MIJ version rumbles out of your speakers, baby!
IG’s voice sounds a lot more intimate on the Remix, Karin, you should really get that two CD Deluxe Edition from 2014 which is the only format that features the Kevin Shirley Remix. And is not that easy to get anymore.
I wonder how the Steven Wilson Remix will sound on a proper stereo – he’s no fan of wide panning (I am), so will we end up with Jon and Ritchie warring for supremacy in the middle rather than being positioned left and right (or right and left) in the sonic picture? đ
June 23rd, 2025 at 20:32Judging from the YT clip, Wilson has panned RB and JL as on the original. Wilson’s approach to these remixes is usually to recreate the orginal mixaes but with modern technology.
A funny story I heard in an interview with SW was when he remixed an old Jethro Tull album and realised that the tape machine used for the stereo master was broken in some way. It was too fast or too slow or something. He started fixing this but then realised he couldn’t destroy the feeling of the original that everyone was used to after listening to the album for 40 odd years. đ
June 23rd, 2025 at 21:08I got the details mixed up regarding SW and JT. Here is the quote I was thinking about:
“Honestly, to me, bearing in mind I don’t know a lot about analogue tape, it sounds like the original was mixed on to a faulty machine or a machine that wasn’t lined up properly. And it’s always sounded a bit like that: very muffled and hissy. I was able to fix that, because the source multitrack tapes sounded beautiful. The remix has clarity missing from the original, it sounds beautiful, and to some it’s the definitive mix now. But understandably, other people would probably still rather hear the original analogue mix with all its flaws. I accept that. That’s not something that can ever be reconciled with a remix project, which is why I always try to encourage the record company to include both the original and the remix on a reissue set, as two different experiences.”
It was Aqualing and the article is here: https://www.soundonsound.com/people/steven-wilson-remixing-classic-albums
June 23rd, 2025 at 21:14@ 53 – it certainly was, another Elvis related song at a similar time. Cheers.
June 23rd, 2025 at 22:10I remember that Steve Wilson article, his approach to remixing is more appealing to many from what we hear. Kudos to him for doing just that. Cheers.
June 23rd, 2025 at 22:19@ 57 – “Actually, not that it is any of your business, but in my home we have a deal about not having posters of beloved singers in the bedroom!” What, not even on the bedroom ceiling, that is disappointing Karin. Cheers.
June 23rd, 2025 at 22:31I lived for years with a life size poster of Keanu R/Neo in full Matrix regalia at the wall right across our shower door! I always hoped Edith would grow out of it – she eventually did and I never said a word. đ

And when do you get the chance to hear Jon solo eight bars IN THE MIDDLE OF SOTW?!
June 24th, 2025 at 01:58OK, so I’ve listened to this a time or three… here’s my thoughts: The vocals (Karin will hate me for saying this) are a little too in your face and the drums could be a little bit higher in the mix. It doesn’t sound much like a live recording… too sanitized. Live music (excepting classical of course) should sound at least a little rough, a bit dirty. Doesn’t really make me wanna run out and buy it when it comes out even though my copies of both MIJ & LIJ are on their last legs.
June 25th, 2025 at 08:01@64

Also, there is more than just that rodeo “male lazy bum” position you seem to thrust forward here. Be a little more traditional!
“It’s a little retro and a bit passĂ©
But you know you make her feel A-OK
And she feels alright, the stars are bright, the missionary position
And the acrobats, well they tend to scoff
All you know is that you can get her off

*******************************************************
“Who controls those?”
In whatever basket the original EMI/Warner Bros rights to the 70s catalog of Purple ended up. RHINO belongs to WARNER MUSIC and was also responsible for the Machine Head remix whose success no doubt spawned the reworking of MIJ too.
June 25th, 2025 at 17:10guys, all I was suggesting was that if there isn’t any room left on the bedroom walls for posters, what about the ceiling? Now that has been turned into some sort of erotic cabaret. It was a simple innocent suggestion, that is all. I am starting to worry about the Wrath of Karin looming larger as each day passes. Not to mention little Anton, he would be appalled. Cheers.
June 25th, 2025 at 22:09Innocence is such an overrated and inherently flawed concept.
You have flooded this once squeaky-clean site with a cesspool of innuendo, Herr MacGregor! I can no longer stand by.
PS: Does Anton sleep in the bedroom too? Now you really have me worried.
June 25th, 2025 at 23:28@73
MacGregor, have no fear đđ
I know you have a pure mind, just as I have!
Actually I was merely thinking about the exquisite paintings on the ceiling made by Michelangelo (the guy who was born 1475, died 1564) (not the guy from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) in the Sistine Chapel in RomeâŠ
Those paintings may be almost as intriguing as mr Gillan!
But no, we havenât anything artistic there!
And what do I usually do whenever the debates in here turn away from the innocent path we enjoy to walk by? âSmile and nod, smile and nodâ (if I donât behave here, with all the double entendres I meet on a daily basis, I will soon end up being a headbanger with more power in my neck, than a young Ian when Purple performed âLucilleââŠ.)

And now:
June 26th, 2025 at 09:30@74. Uwe! Why should it worry you where Anton sleeps?
I donât know what you are aiming for here (âsmile and nodââŠ.) but I can promise you Anton sleeps like the litttle angel he is, every single night đ
Russ, I didnât know about the spinal surgeries. In that case you need of course rest and avoid more strenuous activities wherever you can.
June 26th, 2025 at 09:33âAnton is safe, thank you so much for your kind compassion for an innocent little doglet.â
I have a faint memory that in bygone centuries small âdogletsâ owned by the ladies of high society were regarded as anything BUT âinnocentâ. There even was a term for them: âSchoĂhundâ, âLusthundâ and even, more robustly, âPunzenleckerâ.
Poetry was written about them, if I may quote the great Gotthold Ephraim Lessing who committed to paper in the mid 18th century:
âDein HĂŒndchen, Dorilis, ist zĂ€rtlich, tĂ€ndelnd, rein.
DaĂ du es also leckst, soll das mich wundern? Nein.
Allein dein HĂŒndchen lecket dich,
Das wundert mich.â
The English, always a bit late in catching on, needed until 1800 for Samuel Taylor Coleridge
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/91/SamuelTaylorColeridge.jpg/1200px-SamuelTaylorColeridge.jpg
to likewise observe:
âThy lapdog, Rufa, is a dainty beast,
It don’t surprise me in the least.
To see thee lick so dainty clean a beast.
But that so dainty clean a beast licks thee,
Yes â that surprises me.â
As I said, innocence is overrated and not really a natural occurrence.
I hasten to add: Such practices were unheard of in the Kingdom of Denmark at all times.
Max, my brethren vom Land der Dichter und Denker, donât you think I deserve accolades for being the first to contribute a Lessing poem on these sacred pages?

June 28th, 2025 at 07:38Hi, on the one hand the 10LP Box with all the concerts and songs again on vinyl is a heavenly thing, but my old 2DLP from the seventies sounds so damn-good because of the old analogue technique and because of Martin Birchs art of mixing!
I mean: Martin Birch is the best!
So i made as an addition only a mixtape on MC with the best alternative tracks from the 3 concerts for me from the old CD-version “Live In Japan” to have a complete alternative “Made In Japan II” – Concert and this fits for me best and is enough MiJ an cheaper.

June 29th, 2025 at 02:00@ 87 – talking of Boris Karloff and that era Uwe, I finally watched the recent Nosferatu movie. I quite liked it, it wasn’t over the top, good acting and the only naff bit was the ending. (Spoiler alert ahead) for any Nosferatu geeks out there. As in a silly gore horror attempt when he started to DIE! They managed to get that far into the movie and it seems like they just HAD to do it. Anyway, apart from commencing in Germany, why? It was in England wasn’t it, in the original Bram Stoker story. Artistic licence no doubt. Otherwise all good. Cheers.

Her (the original) version of that song is light years ahead of what “He Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned” did a few years later.

“That is one great voodooâish version Big Mama does there”
Agreed… now I know where the Brothers Vaughn got (at least some of it anyway) their inspiration from.
June 29th, 2025 at 07:28“Her (the original) version of that song is light years ahead of what âHe Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentionedâ did a few years later.”
You may use his acronym though: BT for butter tenor, a Danish invective hurled at him by parts of the more rural local population there. Savages really.
Speaking of: St Ian wasn’t the only DP croaker who copied Elvis, listen here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGzBlEGwzJ8
Moving on, from Tennessee to Transylvania …
Herr MacGregor, staging Noseferatu in an imaginary town in Germany does raise some serious plot incredulities: Why would you need to travel per ship over oceans to get from Transylvania, Romania, to a German harbor town? By coach, train or via shipping on rivers (or a combination of all three) would have worked just fine, but getting to Germany via a land trip to the Black Sea, then to the Mediterranean, from there to the Atlantic and then to the North Sea seems unduly complicated, especially for a several centuries old Vampyr who is well-read. Or perhaps the Count just liked to be nauseous from seasickness?!
June 29th, 2025 at 17:17@102
âSavages really.â
– but I really appreciate Frank Sinatra!
And I can almost feel the disappointment oozing from you if I one day would surrender to the BTâs choir of worshippers!

July 2nd, 2025 at 04:03@104 Question is: How come Iron Maiden never made one? Might be the only topic of war with british paticipation to which Steve Harris never wrote an 11-minute track which has no chorus but 5 changes in tempo
July 2nd, 2025 at 08:00@111
Well, they made âthe Writing on the Wallâ, but that was a completely different wall, and many years earlier âșïž
July 2nd, 2025 at 11:29@109
MacGregor, AI says:
âThere’s no known Led Zeppelin song specifically about Hadrian’s Wall. However, Led Zeppelin’s music often references historical and mythological themes, and they have a song titled “Immigrant Song” that draws inspiration from Norse mythology. “The Battle of Evermore” also uses imagery from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. While these songs don’t directly mention Hadrian’s Wall, they demonstrate the band’s interest in historical and fantastical settings, which could extend to other periods and places, including Roman Britain. â
Maybe we ought to dwell into LZ?!
(Psst but for our own sakes in another forum đ)
July 2nd, 2025 at 11:32@108
âdishearteningâ?!
Awww poor little Uwe đ
I do feel the urge to enlighten you a bit:
Barbarians?! Pfft!
Vikings are among the nicest people in the worldâŠ..
July 2nd, 2025 at 11:35No twins here, Karin. We’re just educated. I mean, writing here and not knowing BBC songs… get your facts together.
Ah, forget that of course in case you havn’t already and keep up the nordic humor here. Very much appreciated in the home of the nerds.
July 2nd, 2025 at 18:42And no, I do not play the bass. But I think it’s underrated. Or as Todd Snider knows: You can try and sing lead if you wanna be a star
But the butts are all shaking to the bass guitar…
@ 113- Karin, who is AI? I don’t think I have had the pleasure as yet. Cheers.
July 2nd, 2025 at 22:54@ 113 -yes Karin the Led Zeppelin link to those songs, Uwe loves all that. Maybe we should set up a LZ forum just for him, he he he. Especially the Tolkien stories, he simply cannot get enough of all that. In regards to the BCC song ‘Hadrian’s Wall’, it was a surprise and a good one to hear Joe Bonamassa singing that. Cheers.
July 2nd, 2025 at 23:10@115
Arrhh too bad! I would have loved the two of you being twins, you know: double the fun – double the mayhem âșïžđ (and normally double the cleaning, but that is NOT my problem đ)
In my lunch break, I get a lovely cup of coffee, get in here, and have a giggle (often I LOL đ) (sometimes Anton looks at me worrying..)
And between you, there is this, ahhh je nâai sais quois – mais peut etre einen verrĂŒckter Humor, auf eine sĂŒĂe Art âșïžđ€
Ok no bass playing to you!
Could I choose freely I would love to play the piano!
But when I was a kid in school, my music teacher found me so awful that the only âinstrumentâ I got to play, was two wooden sticks I should bang together, and keep some kind of rythm. A lot of times she just sighed and made me get water and snacks for my friends in class đđ (my self esteem dropped to seriously low standards đ§)
But never mind, itâs also neat to be able to enjoy the music without thinking: âohh that was a bum noteâ! Or âohh I could do that betterâ – I simply enjoy most music, and most singers (well, except âyou-know-who)
BTW: found a very interesting statement from our very own Ian Gillan, let me see if I can memorise it:
âAnd I tell them we were influenced by Chopin, Beethoven, Howlinâ Wolf, Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Lonnie Donegan, folk music, big band, swing and Buddy Rich.
I say that and I see their faces change, and they say: âWell, what does that have to do with hard rock?â âWell, those are the roots of Deep Purpleâ
– this is VERY interesting!
First of all that some butter-tenor is NOT mentioned at all!
Some might say, âWell Purple were influenced by Bach, and he isnât mentioned eitherâ – yeah! But I have read in here about that colossal influence Elvis APPARENTLY had on at least Ian G, so it is rather peculiar he isnât mentioning the American crooner, at all!!!
I guess this proves, once and for all, that yes, Ian might have liked Elvis a little bit, but as I read in his WORLD-FAMOUS autobiography, he lost all interest in EP in the mid-50s!
I finally wash my hands in this matter! And I certainly expect tons of excuses from you and your twin Uwe!
July 3rd, 2025 at 11:26I would also like some bowing to the ground where the both of you sing:
(Choose your own key, since I donât know any of your voices)
âKarin is the greatest interpreter of Ian Gillan, La La La La La âŠ..â
Over and over again đ
@116
MacGregor, AI is âArtificial intelligenceâ!
Normally I google everything! And I prefer that still..
Tried to put my name in the AI-âmachineâ and that was âfunâ!
All it said was that Iâm a very big fan of Purple, and love Ianâs lyricsâŠ
Not a word about my work, my other interests etc⊠AI didnât even know about Anton,đ not even a single word about me being a very nice coffee maker! So very disappointedâŠ.
Artificial intelligence, my a..
July 3rd, 2025 at 11:31đ
@117
Are you completely sure that Uwe loves LZ in combination with Tolkien?
Hmm, I really would like to find another ânew homeâ (like this) to go into detail regarding LED Zeppelin! đ
July 3rd, 2025 at 11:33@ 119 – “Tried to put my name in the AI-âmachineâ and that was âfunâ!” What happened then Karin………………did it reject you or accept you, the mind boggles. Cue Robert Calvert ‘my android replica is playing up again and it’s no joke’………………are we in for more Gillanism from an android…………….Oh no…………………….surely not! Seriously, I wouldn’t put my name in there, not my real name at least. Although as we are aware, ‘Big Brother’ probably already has it and some……….Welcome to the Machine. Cheers.
July 3rd, 2025 at 22:34@ 120 – Oh yes Karin, I am completely sure of Uwe’s fascination for Tolkien and his son’s favourite band. It is all written here at THS for anyone to peruse through, the passion, the dedication and the desire to go where no man has ever gone………middle earth. If there was ever someone who was steeped in Led Zeppelin lore it is Uwe. Why do you think his son became a Led Zeppelin geek, his father’s influence, surely. Anyway, we had better be careful, we don’t want to incur the Wrath of Uwe, do we. Oh and talking of spells, I have succumb to your’s Karin, through your medium Steve. I have ordered the Gillan deluxe box set………………shock horror! I tried to resist but you know how spells are, they can eventually find there way in through the armour of resistance. I would have to include Uwe in that Gillanism Gillanuniverse too, he has been rather persistent over the years, but in a good way. All Hail Gillan. Cheers.
July 3rd, 2025 at 22:52@121
âSeriously, I wouldnât put my name in there, not my real name at leastâ
– awww please do! And reveal for us in here what it says đ
@122
âWhy do you think his son became a Led Zeppelin geek, his fatherâs influence, surely.â
– well, normally, or at least thatâs what Iâm told (have no kids myself) sons never let themselves be influenced by their fathers!
But maybe Uwe does possess some mythic powers we havenât discovered yet!
That could also explain his voluminous knowledge and abilities (think of the new cursive he masters to perfection đ) and not to mention that he never gets tired of explaining things to this dumb blond (for which Iâm forever grateful! I really am Uwe âșïž)
MacGregor, are you by any chance on FaceBook?
July 4th, 2025 at 15:07Iâm asking because, well, I am, and daily Iâm inundated with requests from âIan Gillansâ! And that is very, well, not important really, but I have asked the Meta people to stop them. But every single time they answer that those impersonating Ian doesnât do anything wrong!
If I was the CEO of Meta, I would hit hard on that đ
@123
“sons never let themselves be influenced by their fathers!”
But it happens anyway, whether we like it or not.

July 4th, 2025 at 19:46@ 123- I will NEVER do Facebook or the like Karin. In many ways I am ‘old fashioned’ in a sense, quill and parchment and a message in a bottle for any communication. Even a Carrier pigeon can be useful at times. I could be referred to as a dinosaur, an old relic, a luddite even, he he he. I have this Mac computer locked down like Fort Knox, the Vatican and The Kremlin. I am definitely not a ‘Bot’ or an Ian Gillan impersonator. Truth be told, I am a Led Zeppelin geek who has infiltrated THS site to give people like Uwe a hard time. Oh and your good self. Cheers. P.S. Don’t tell Anton any of the above.
July 5th, 2025 at 00:47@124
Subconsciously!
July 5th, 2025 at 05:04@123
And another thing… You mentioned Facebook; I know it wasn’t directed at me but it is something I’ve been meaning to bring up to you. How come every time I go to Ian Gillan’s Facebook page your comment to whatever has been posted is always the first one shown?
July 5th, 2025 at 06:57Leon morphed in his music tastes from Righ Said Fred to Eminem to Korn to Judas Priest to Mötley CrĂŒe to GnR to Whitesnake (Hair Metal version) to Lynyrd Skynyrd to Led Zep to then get lost somewhere between the Mississippi Delta and Hank Williams!
July 5th, 2025 at 20:41âBut when I was a kid in school, my music teacher found me so awful that the only âinstrumentâ I got to play, was two wooden sticks I should bang together, and keep some kind of rythm. A lot of times she just sighed and made me get water and snacks for my friends in class đđ (my self esteem dropped to seriously low standards đ§).â
I know what itâs like. đ
There are no hopeless pupils, only bad teachers who shame their calling, Karin, that is – assume lotus position! – a slice of Asian wisdom and philosophy.
https://i.makeagif.com/media/8-08-2019/uv94qb.gif
There are three kinds of teachers that never teach you anything in your life: music, art and PE/sports teachers. They simply gauge you when they see you for the first time like within ten seconds whether you are of any interest to them or not. And then concentrate on those they deem worthy – without exception. The thought that they might help you to appreciate and make music, acquire drawing and painting skills or show you how to dribble a basket ball doesnât even cross their minds.
July 5th, 2025 at 22:49@ 127- Whoah and oh no, surely Karin hasn’t hijacked the Ian Gillan Facebook site, this is of great concern for anyone on Facebook. Or is Karin AI itself, are we in further trouble than we fear? Did anyone else notice how Karin was promoting AI in her recent comments, hmmmmm. How are we going to create the penultimate android then? Or will the ultimate android be named Karin and behave accordingly? We do live in interesting and worrying times. I suppose if someone could programme the android to NOT like anything Ian Gillan related, that would work out ok. Stay tuned everyone. Cheers.
July 5th, 2025 at 23:14I forgot about Anton, is he a K9. If Doctor Who could have one, why couldn’t Karin?
July 5th, 2025 at 23:23@127
âHow come every time I go to Ian Gillanâs Facebook page your comment to whatever has been posted is always the first one shown?â
– really??
I have no idea. Sometimes Iâm the first to respond but certainly not every time.
I guess you just have seen those few posts where I was the lucky first commenter đ
July 6th, 2025 at 03:16@125
âI will NEVER do Facebook or the likeâ
– I get that! First recently did I enter the world of fb,
Have always been opposite of the most popular social hype.
But because of my work, I joined last year.
âŠ..and almost by accident found the pages of Purple and Ian âșïž
Uhh I never suggested anyone but scammers (who wants to steal money from poor lonely ladies ( or gentlemen) to be behind the many fake profiles of Ian Gillan).
Which is also why I wonder they arenât closed down (the profiles, not fb!)
âTruth be told, I am a Led Zeppelin geek who has infiltrated THS site to give people like Uwe a hard time.â
– your secret is safe with me – but donât know for the rest of the lot in here đ

I go there pretty much every day and it’s always like that.

âThere are no hopeless pupils, only bad teachers who shame their calling,â
– thanks Uwe!
Well, she is excused because I was terrible.
But otoh my schoolmate Henrik taught me to play the riff to Smoke on the Water, piano, so maybe I should have been properly motivated!
What a whole different experience it would have been had there been played some decent music we could learn from đ
Instead of this:

đđ
Uwe, not to brag at all, but I did fairly well in other subjects, so I canât complain about my years in school. But youâre indeed right that some teachers have their pets and golden childs..
July 6th, 2025 at 14:53@130
âWhoah and oh no, surely Karin hasnât hijacked the Ian Gillan Facebook site,â
– of course I have NOT! đ đ
I wouldnât even know how to!
âOr is Karin AI itselfâ
– not at all! đ. The only thing I am is a VERY good coffee maker, a brilliant Homeopath (well, sorry no other in here praise my skills at this, so of course I have to đ) and I am very good to my doglet (who btw is a normal sweet little dog, a Danish-Swedish Farmdog, who is spoiled but cute as a button!
https://youtube.com/shorts/QhfusktpQao?si=wlAEccpPfpuuMojg
And here he is in all his glory, with a snack on the tip,of his nose, and I have to say: it is Purple playing in the back đ
July 6th, 2025 at 15:03@136
Well, well, well, how come you NEVER say hi then?
Other people from HS sometimes writes a bit, not that Iâm offended or anythingâŠ. đ Iâm really not!
July 6th, 2025 at 15:15@139
“Well, well, well, how come you NEVER say hi then?”
I don’t have a Facebook account… I don’t participate in social media anymore. I saw where it was headed about 15+ years ago and cut it out of my life. I just go to that particular page to see things that might not get a chance to see If I only limited myself getting all of my DP related news from here.
July 6th, 2025 at 21:42@ 138 – Awww, sweet Anton, thanks for that Karin. I was about to ask what music is he being tortured by, he looks a little concerned. Perhaps it is the ‘celebrity’ photo shoot that he is worried about, he he he. More like that little biscuit on his nose though, a good little reward for being an excellent pose. Cheers.
July 6th, 2025 at 22:34@140
Ohh, you can actually sniff around in there without an account!
Good for you, I didnât know that đ
July 7th, 2025 at 09:08@141
Well, Anton is a concerned little doglet!
But he is very content listening to Ianâs soothing voice đ
And then he is 7 yo and without any camera whatsoever on him, he is acting like 6 months puppy!

âYou just wait, Karin, you know that Rome wasnât âŠ

What a mighty fine crisp voice she has!
Do you by chance know what that young lady is doing these days?
July 12th, 2025 at 09:39i still like the original Martin Birch-MiJ-Mix a little bit more then all the remixes and remasters
