Shadow of the blues
Another book on the horizon, and it is a Whitesnake story by Martin Popoff, being published by Wymer.
In Walking in the Shadow of the Blues: The Whitesnake Story, the first ever full biography of the band, top music writer Martin Popoff tells the tale of rock legend David Coverdale, from his Deep Purple roots to the two distinct incarnations of his mega-popular creation.
Whitesnake began life as a UK-based blues rock outfit, until the lad from England’s chilly east coast transported the act to America’s sunny west coast in search of fame, fortune, big videos and even bigger hair. Coverdale found them all, and 1987’s self-titled album went eight times platinum in the US alone before the band’s bright star waned in the face of grimy grunge.
In this book, Popoff conducted 30 interviews of major characters, including Coverdale himself, to piece together the band’s roller-coaster history. He follows their story through the hirings and firings, the splits and reunions and the image changes which have enabled Coverdale, through his Whitesnake vehicle, to position himself firmly within the pantheon of hard rock greats.
If you’ve rocked out to anthems like “Here I Go Again,” “Fool For Your Loving,” “Still Of The Night” or “Slow An’ Easy,” this is essential reading.
Yes, for the job at hand, Popoff interviewed (and many of them multiple times), David Coverdale, Bernie Marsden, Neil Murray, Micky Moody, Adrian Vandenberg, Steve Vai, John Kalodner, Doug Aldrich, Keith Olsen, Ian Paice and many others, to deliver his usual album by chapter, with every song touched upon. So, what are you waiting for… Come An’ Get It!

June 18th, 2025 at 14:27Well Uwe, the man himself might have the answer. June 18th, 2025 at 21:52@ 4 – Exactly Uwe, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE???????????? I wonder who will be next? @ 10 – “To be completely honest it was a very nice guy who taught me to appreciate David Coverdale!” Did you bump into someone at another forum Karin or in Denmark itself. I am confused. Those sort of people do not exist here. They went out with the dinosaur. Cheers.
June 18th, 2025 at 21:58Buying another Popoff book about Whitesnake, Deep Purple, Rainbow, etc., is about as intelligent as purchasing another new big Made In Japan box set.
June 19th, 2025 at 00:15Repetition sets in, doesn’t it?
Oop! Did I just hit “PAY NOW!”?
Me so stupid.
@14
Yes Max, I did know that, and it puzzles me how come we are 6 millions inhabitants in Denmark at this very moment, because almost everyone here are wearing Clogs in some form….☺️
This calls for an anti-clogs song:

Well MacGregor, that’s for me to know, and you never to find out 😄☺️
(Unless you somehow can help me )push Uwe so much that he finally will behave accordingly to the good old lawyer-standards, then I might tell you in strictest confidence ☺️
June 19th, 2025 at 09:39@ 17…. Popoff gets his information from the source, how do you get yours ?
June 19th, 2025 at 11:59My learned opinion on all matters Xanadu: Olivia Newton John beats Geddy Lee in prettiness hands down and skirts up.

She was also more skillful in makeup application and kimono-wearing if the back cover of 2112 isnanything to go by.

Of course, if you’re shipwrecked on some forlorn island in the southern hemisphere, absence of women might have you reevaluate that choice.

Uwe, by the time I was cast upon this earth (1959), Olivia was already here, waiting for me. We (all the shipwrecked innocent males) didn’t have to go anywhere and it was wonderful. We had her all to ourselves. However, she became bored with all of us after a while and decided to spread her wings, much to our displeasure. To see a little of what Neil wrote about it all, from our lament. Cheers.
I had heard the whispered tales

@ 20- “(Unless you somehow can help me )push Uwe so much that he finally will behave accordingly to the good old lawyer-standards, then I might tell you in strictest confidence ☺️” Do lawyers have standards Karin, first time I have heard of that! Cheers.
June 20th, 2025 at 07:28i have sail away the fantastic voyage, suspect this is that w a few updates
June 20th, 2025 at 08:41Will we finally learn why Colin Hodgkinson to this day never speaks about Whitesnake except his usual shoulder-shrugging sigh and the terse comment: “It was hard work!”
Martin is an unabashed fan of “David Coverdale – the larger than life media personality”. He loves Coverdale’s work ethos, speaking voice, air, grandezza, little stories and faux grand emotions and showy earnestness (as Little Ian once observed: “David is not really a funny person.”). Don’t expect a character assassination! 😂
June 20th, 2025 at 13:54“Do lawyers have standards Karin, first time I have heard of that!”
Sigh, Herr MacGregor our ethical standards are even cross-species: We never eat shark fin soup.

I wonder why there is always so much rile against the second-oldest profession in the world? One that fills a primal need. The minute you were done bribing the neanderthal chicks with mammoth meat in exchange for sex, you turned to us and asked whether it was legal to do so.
And sure we have a standard – we have standard rates! That only buys you standard advice though. For premium advice you should always invest in premium fees.

June 20th, 2025 at 17:48Good to hear that, albeit belatedly, Herr MacGregor no longer disowns major Aussie talent, after all Geddy Lee and Neil Peart were never as charming as this …

June 20th, 2025 at 18:15His book “Sail Away” from 2015 claimed to be the “first ever full biography of the band” too 🙂
And the rest of the press release is familiar too:

June 20th, 2025 at 20:15Re #’s 11, 25, 29 and any I missed.
I was wondering the same things about it being the same book as Sail Away more or less. I purchased that one a few years back, but still have not gotten very far into it (Misplaced during the move and just recently found).
I have Bernie M’s book as well that is mostly unread, really only opened it to see my name in the back of it from the pre-order because I was going to read it later. Well, tomorrow is a later day……..
