On a third cup of decaf
Ian Gillan recently spoke to AntiHero Magazine, with proceeds of the interview posted a few days ago. The interview appears to have been arranged to promote the Gillan vinyl box. The slightly offbeat conversation turned to the new Purple album about halfway through, when Big Ian mentioned that he “heard it for the first time yesterday” (final mix, presumably). He proceeded to elaborate the creative process:
I just wondered then as it immediately leads me on to the next question. Do you have to write in a particular mindset for Deep Purple or for yourself? Do you have to approach writing in different forms, different ways?
Yes, absolutely. Deep Purple was different than any other kind of writing I do with other people. Deep Purple is primarily an instrumental band. Primarily an instrumental band and the routine is, we book a running finish in 10 days, generally in a studio somewhere and the guys come in at noon. They start jamming and they work till 6 o’clock, take a break at 3 for a cup of tea and then do that every day. Roger and I listen to the music and clock out the occasional bit and think that might be okay for a tune on the album or something. Then we start refocusing on making arrangements and how to develop the song. Then when it is all tucked away I start thinking about the lyrics and the tunes. There is no point before they get literally torn up every day because everything changes every day. There’s no shortage of things to write about lyrically. There is no point trying to create a tune on something that’s going to change in a couple of hours. That’s how it worked with Purple. This is primarily an instrumental band. I just climb on board and write it along.
He also mentioned that he “heard [the album is] coming out in February”.

If the finished product is like ‘Now What’ then we will be pulling our hair out suffering with deep enjoyment!!! Boots on and hands on your hips!!!

Instrumental band is another way of saying we can’t write compete songs. We just jam and record what music that comes up and it’s up to the skills of Bob to stick things together to make songs. Sounds familiar!!! Sad but true. The first 3 songs on ‘now what’ don’t make up any sense and they are just patched up by the producer.

He always is full of crap.
During the Perfect Strangers tour he suggested long instrumental sections were old fashioned or something like that.
“We do five cities a week and played in 48 countries last year. It keeps you right on top of things. Intellectually, and performing every night because as I said, it’s got improvising about 25% of the time.”
Enough said.

Yes, he may have said that the Long Instrumental sections were old fashioned, but that makes the point. As he stated, Purple is an instrumental band. The Best of the Best. Virtuosos as they say. You are going to argue that point? A perfect example of the negative bandwagon that runs rampant on this site. As for the last sentence you quoted and again disclaimed. I would say that 25% is probable about right. That is quite a bit lower than back in the 80s and 70s. I you watch one Purple gig and then the next one the next day, you will find many differences in the way the songs are played. Maybe not as extreme as back in your Perfect World Days, but definitely many differences in approach. Hell, I remember having a one on one with you about how I too had gotten tired of the long extended versions. I guess I have changed over the years. AS SO HAS THE BAND! I much prefer 15 to 20 songs over 8 extended versions as back in the day. Certain songs are still extended today, just not as long as to fit more tunes in. AND THAT IS A GOOD THING.

It is a matter of taste.
Apart from that, they could do whatever they are able to I still would hate Morse his sound and playing.
And I just cant stand watching this old man struggling through the songs.
I am not masochistic. 🙂
I had my “moments” that I felt and suggested they should have done much more their own material.
We ll never know how that would have worked out because they re not going to do it, no matter how passionate you keep repeating that idea.
They ve made up their minds and decided they did not feel bad about making it their final bed and sleeping in it as well
.Good for you you can hear the differences night after night, I cant even be bothered to listen to all of what is posted, like I would have years ago.
I scroll a bit here and there and off I am, enough is enough.

I WANT IT TO BE WHATEVER THEY COME UP WITH. As has always been from the first album back in 1968 to now. That is what makes being a Purple fan the blessing that it is. No two albums are the same. You never know what you are going to get but they are all good… Even S&M. Though I do file that under the Rainbow section in the cabinet. Sorry you are still so unhappy with it all, especially the performance (or lack thereof) of your HERO in his 3 Rainbow Coverband shows. Geez, is there anything worth living for in your unhappy place???
