Jack the riffer
Candice Night was a guest on the Rock of Nations podcast. It was announced some time ago as a Ritchie Blackmore interview. In reality, it was Candice who sat down first, talking about many things, their children among them — they are very musical, with Autumn singing opera and playing some guitar, and Rory playing drums. Halfway through the session, her hubby drops in rather unexpectedly to tell some war stories (yep, including the one with Ozzy’s runny nose). It’s a long one, and we’ve heard some bits and pieces before, but is worth it.
Thanks to Mike Whiteley for the heads-up.

Parenthood confronts you with many challenges. Children not living up to expectations and picking up drumming 🥁 …

November 16th, 2025 at 23:09Father (Uwe) tries his hardest to turn his son into a Deep Purple aficionado and he instead turns him into a Led Zeppelin geek. These anomalies can happen in life apparently. A devastating result for the Old Man, he he he. Cheers
November 17th, 2025 at 06:56Let’s hope poor Rory doesn’t hear that interview for the next few years. 13-year-old me certainly wouldn’t be too happy about my mom telling the internet that she still is singing me too sleep
November 17th, 2025 at 12:27True, that is among my most crushing parental experiences. And Max complains about his offspring’s infatuation with Black Sabbath, the man has no idea what true family tragedy is.
November 17th, 2025 at 14:47How can I possibly have an idea of tragedy when that offspring of mine is a regular on a site dedicated to the one and only band worth being a regular on their site?
November 17th, 2025 at 22:54I bet Rory (“My dad named me after this Irish guitarist no one younger than 60 has ever heard of and he is not even a member of Oasis though his last name sounds the same.“) is just as embarrassed of his parents as all 13-year-olds are. That is a good thing. 😂
If I had named my son Ritchie, I don’t think he would have ever spoken with me again! 😎
He was also (along with his dad) the member of of the family who skipped the Taylor Swift gig they had tickets for. Candice took him to a football game the day after.
I wonder, if Ritchie had gone to the Taylor Swift gig and jammed a song with her on stage, would that have led to mass suicides here in this forum (similar to what happened when US Forces invaded the first Japanese islands in 1945 and the local populace jumped off cliffs)? 🤣
November 17th, 2025 at 23:01@ 6 – No Lemmings here at all Uwe, We KNOW Ritchie would never attend such drivel. By football I presume you are referring to what others call soccer? Good on him if so, he was always a soccer ‘tragic’ Ritchie, not to mention a few other MKII Deep Purple members. And why not I say. Ian Gillan is also a cricket tragic, Hooray! Regarding your comment that if you named your son Ritchie, well, I will interject here and add, ‘it would have been even worse when he turned into a Led Zeppelin geek’, he he he. Oh that would have been almost perfect, wouldn’t it? Or it could have been a rather bad joke, it depends on who is looking at that. Your son would have loathed it later on when he commenced worshipping at the LZ shrine. Just wondering as to Rory and Ritchie’s son’s name and is that a fact about naming him after the Irish banjo player or a joke? I don’t recall ever reading or hearing that, but as you know I do NEED to get out more, so I may have missed that. Cheers.
November 18th, 2025 at 02:41Ritchie’s long weathered fingernails (I know, he needs them for playing acoustics) when he’s handing Candice her mug of coffee are, uhum, an acquired taste … 😑
Candice’s analysis of Ritchie playing around the right note with “wrong” ones in a searching manner is quite apt.
In case you wondered what Tray Hensley sounds like (I didn’t know him either), whom Ritchie rates highly:

Ritchie seems to have – contrary to what he sometimes says – a real appreciation for speed, this guy is essentially a flat picker shredder on acoustics and has a banjo player’s hastiness in his playing that sometimes reminds me of Johnny Winter, another one of Ritchie’s favorites. Horses for courses, but this is way too hurried for me and rhythmically samey, running up and down the same Bluegrass scales, albeit with impressive speed and accuracy.
November 18th, 2025 at 05:48@ 8 – thanks for the Tray Hensley links Uwe, a dazzling player and he does play rhythm while he is singing at least. That gives a little break from his very impressive lead playing. There is no hiding behind anything when playing an acoustic guitar, no effects and no other musicians backing you. Just him and his geetar and his singing. I enjoyed that, mind you, after about half an hour or so it would be time to move on. Cheers.
