A Ritchie Blackmore band, but certainly not Rainbow

Rockpages.gr has an interview with JLT, in which he talks about his current projects (he just finished an acoustic tour of Greece), recalls what happened to Over The Rainbow, and gives his opinion on the current incarnation of Rainbow. Ah, and we think he called us “a bunch of idiots”. For we shall heap coals of fire on our heads. Or something.

Rockpages.gr: In 2009 you formed Over The Rainbow with other ex-Rainbow members, what happened to that?

Joe Lynn Turner: Well, bands are like bad marriages sometimes… and the eagles fly and people get full of themselves and everything happens and… the guys are great guys and also my friends, but it was getting out of control and I was getting very tired of the attitudes that I was hearing. I mean everybody is a full member and need to say this was my mistake of being a generous person. Because, then I couldn’t get control of them. But, everybody had a vote and the votes were getting crazy, so to make a long story sort I just said “look, I wanna drop out okay? You guys want the project? You can keep the project, you can get another singer, whatever, but no promoter will have it”, and they tried Dougie (White), they tried Graham (Bonnet), but nobody wanted to buy it, that says a lot for me.

Rockpages.gr: What is your opinion of what’s called Rainbow now, the new band that Ritchie Blackmore formed?

Joe Lynn Turner: Well, I’ve already come out to the press about it, saying that I don’t believe that this is Rainbow at all! I think that this is a Ritchie Blackmore band, but certainly not Rainbow… in fact, if anything there is three members of Blackmore’s Night. I think Dougie said it best to me, he said: “you know Joe, it’s not Rainbow unless they do an album and a tour”. And I said “I have to agree with you Dougie”. Because, that’s the truth you know… until you can write the songs, make some sense out of it all, do some great gigs, add to the name “Rainbow”… otherwise our legacy, whether it’s Ronnie, God bless him, or Graham, or myself, or even Dougie, comes down in stature. Because, then anybody can be in Rainbow like this. So, I don’t agree with it and I’ll answer probably another question of yours right now… I wanted to create an authentic Rainbow reunion. I was talking to Carol Stevens, the management, over a year and a few months – no kidding! Everyone called my delusional that I believed Ritchie would ever rock again. Everyone called me this, that… I got a lot of crap in the press. I am pretty sick of that by the way, because you are a bunch of idiots, if you don’t realize that! She didn’t want to go along with a multi-million dollar deal I’ve set up with UMG, Universal Music Group, if you don’t know what that is, Rockfuel media for an HD, 3D DVD, who just went to No.1 with the Axl Rose “Appetite For Democracy” DVD, so it’s great people, okay? We were going to have re-packaging of our box sets etc, and I was talking to Rick Franks over to Live Nation who wanted to put us on the biggest festivals. And to my surprise, to my shock… I found out he didn’t want to do it… Why? I will never know. I have my suspicions and I’ve read a lot of fans comments on their suspicions, and some of them I think are correct. But, I really don’t know why. It’s a shame. Because, I believe that the fans deserve it. I believe Rainbow deserves it. I wanted to do something like an extravaganza you know… sing Dio songs, Bonnet songs, everybody… Bob Daisley on bass… I talk to people… and they were all into it. It’s a shame really!

Didn’t we hear similar complaints from big Ian back in the early 1990s when Joe was fronting the Purps?. Something about calling it Rainbow instead of Deep Purple?. Anyway, if people stop asking Joe questions about this new Rainbow formation, then he won’t feel the need to answer them!.
Obviously he is still upset about how things have panned out, nevermind, it’s probably all for the best anyway. I still think that Joe is a great vocalist & performer, I’m just not so enthused about lyrics that deal with sadness & relationship breakdowns. For Rock’s sake, Joe don’t dwell on what might have been & just cheer up!
To quote Jim Morrison: “I woke up this morning & I got myself a beer… The future’s uncertain & the end is always near… Let it roll, baby roll…. All night long!. Smiles to ya!.

It’s a Ritchie Blackmore karaoke band. Ritchie has no respect or faith and don’t trust anyone. I think he doesn’t even trust himself. The fans were never at the heart of his mind but the loyal fans always kept him at the heart of their minds. Strange kind of fans I say!!!

    Anthony says:

I think we have to give Ritchie the benefit of the doubt as he has had great success with picking and ‘establishing’ singers throughout the years in both Deep Purple and Rainbow and Ronnie Romero will not disappoint. Its Ritchie’s band at the end of the day and yes I think we have to be thankful he is at least performing full-on rock once again 🙂

  30. 30
    Tommy H. says:

Dear Joe, please don’t be upset when I ask you this: WHY did you arrange all those deals concerning a temporary Rainbow reunion without the official green light from Ritchie? I mean, after all those years, don’t you know how this guy ticks? I wouln’t have done anything before there’s any offical public statement from the boss himself. Whatever it ever was – first and foremost it always was Ritchie’s band. He always handpicked the guys who played in Rainbow himself, no one else did. However, Doogie and you are wrong if you ask me. It IS Rainbow whenever Ritchie likes to call it Rainbow, period! He owns the brand. As soon as you hit the stage as “Rainbow” you are definitely part of the brand because there is only one band which is allowed to use that name and that’s Ritchie’s! It doesn’t matter if it is just for a few gigs or an album/tour. People will attend “Rainbow shows”. Ronnie Romero is a great vocalist by the way who, to my ears, resembles Dio’s voice very well. I understand your sentiments towards the songs you wrote when you were part of the band but Rainbow’s reputation was built on the material of the Dio era. What came afterwards just can’t compare to that at all – there’re just too many good tunes from those first albums to compete with.

  31. 31
    Alan says:

It is Rainbow for one reason and one reason only…………. Ritchie says it is.

    Jean says:

I can’t remember at which point Joe Lynn Turner had received the power to decide what is Rainbow or not?

For me, if the upcoming line-up is not Rainbow, in this case, the Turner-era wasn’t Rainbows neither.
Turner didn’t sing the Dio songs that well, IMO. So what is more Rainbow? Something with Romero or something with Turner?
(Just kidding, Rainbow is great with Turner, too. Not as good as the Dio-era, but great also!)

  33. 33
    RB says:

I’m pleased that Joe isn’t part of the band, it would have just been silly. Ritchie can call it what he wants, and the ‘Rainbow’ name is probably just used in order to get a few more bums on seats (as we say in the UK). I seriously have my doubts that Joe has the clout to set up a deal as big as he claims, bless him.

    Tracy(Zero the Hero)Heyder says:

All of this is sooooooo JLT. How many times have I stated on this site that he is an embarrassment every time he speaks? One thing has now changed. I used to say… “Hey Joe, shut up and sing!” Now I say… “Hey Joe, just shut the hell up!” PERIOD.

That felt sooooooooo good. Now, after that being said, one thing Doogie repeated that I also stated from the beginning is that TMIB needs to come up with some new material with this line-up which truly will give it the proper present day “Rainbow” authenticity. If not then he actually will be galvanizing JLT’s super ego and point. They will ‘cover’ old Rainbow songs, including the JLT stuff without anything original to offer. Not a good way to go as far as this FAN is concerned. Do it right, offer a new album with new material and send Mr. King of Dreams down the Street of Dreams to the local Fortuneteller whom can set him straight about his selfish egotistical Wicked Ways that continue to shine through, making it so evident how The Cut Runs Deep and as much as the Truth Hurts, Too Much is Not Enough regarding you getting back in with TMIB and after wearing yourself to a frazzle and waking up to a big Breakfast in Bed while the new boys in the band set a Fire in the Basement, just remember that in the end, Love Conquers All.

Now drop all of this whining and center your attention on something new and YOURS. Maybe something catchy as with “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow”. But in this case in regards to you. Maybe something like… “JLT’s Sky is Falling”…

  49. 49
    Dpfender says:

It’s kind of mind-boggling why Joe doesn’t get why Ritchie wouldn’t want to do a big deal like the one he proposed-for many reasons. Does RB need the money? Would he want to do a live video when he still isn’t ready to a show? In a recent interview in a mag, he said he’s going back and listening to his old playing. Why would he commit when he’s not sure how it’s going to work? Not to mention his age-related problems with his fingers and back. He’s 70, hasn’t played rock in 20 years and is already planning on going back to playing BN. Just appreciate what a great body of work he’s produced, I say.

    Jeff D. says:

I am just happy Ritchie is doing some rock again. Even if only a few shows. I am glad he didn’t go with the older guys. I want to hear what “he wants to hear.” He has made great decisions in the past so I trust his direction. He has given us a lifetime of guitar enjoyment.

(The wig comments are just absurd. It has nothing to do with music. Why do people bring that up?)

Ritchie will always be Ritchie and I love him for that , he has no one to answer to , we all know hes preternaturally gifted , love him for it and enjoy while we can

By doing Rainbow shows with a totally new band,Ritchie is just being his usual contrary self. Ritchie has never done the safe & predictable thing, I think that’s one of the reasons we like him so much. Personally I’m not going to anyway of the gigs this summer. There’s always the chance that Ritchie could throw one of his infamous moods, & the thing going all pear shaped. To those that are going, I hope you enjoy it, & will this really be the last great blast of rock from Ritchard Hugh Blackmore? With TMIB, no one knows but the man himself

That incarnation of Rainbow with Doogie was Rainbow because there was an album of new material played by that line-up of musicians….. “Stranger in Us All” 1995. It was an official Rainbow release and they toured it playing songs from it and prior Rainbow and Purple music just as with ALL Official Rainbow line-ups prior. Great Album!

Sorry to disagree Tracy, but the SIUA lineup was Rainbow, because that’s what Ritchie called it. Ritchie was the one constant in that ensemble. Ritchie = Rainbow. If he’d wanted to go out as the Ritchie Blackmore Band he certainly could have. He decided to resurrect the Rainbow name, so it’s Rainbow, whether they record anything or not. He’s the one that decides what Rainbow is, not us. If Ritchie calls it Rainbow, it IS Rainbow. That’s as official as it needs to be.

  64. 64
    Blackwood Richmore says:

@61 Tracy, the 1990s version of Rainbow was supposed to be a solo project. The label wanted it to be called Rainbow to sell more albums and tickets. Same thing happened to Tony Iommi back in the 1980s & 1990s with Gillan, Hughes & Martin, et al. Such is life. Smiles to ya!.

    MacGregor says:

Tracey@65- a new album means nothing these days, or very little it seems, simple really. What bands from the ‘classic’ era records a new album & then proceeds to tour playing mostly the songs from the past? If you keep mentioning the ‘tribute’ or ‘authentic’ words, well it looks a little shallow don’t you think! Nothing wrong with nostalgia, but it does depend on how long the ‘dead horse’ is being flogged. You know as well as anyone, the ‘hits’ from the past are what most people crave, it sells the tickets etc. Look at the Coachella joke or as the media are calling it, oldchella’! Classic acts from the ‘golden era’ playing the hits from the past, well mostly anyway. Trying to do a Woodstock or California Jam thing. Except of course the proverbial dollar rules these days unlike back then! Not a new album. New music can be good indeed, but where does it take its place in a set list of a ‘classic’ rock band? At concerts of any ‘classic’ performer, the crowd response to new music compared to the older music says it all. It happens at most gigs i would think. Take away the older music & there isn’t a lot left! Tributes anyone? At least Blackmore is only doing a few gigs for a blast, not flogging a dead horse, so to speak! He has always said it is only a nostalgia sort of thing for a blast. They don’t need a new album, no one does actually when we think about it. If only certain artists promoting new music, stood beside it & performed it in it’s entirety eh? Some do their new album or music first, an intermission then the older music for the 2nd half of the concert! They would never perform that the other way around, would they? Most fans would leave at the intermission. The fans or most of them, become a little testy & lose interest really quickly! These 3 RBR nostalgia gigs are only that, if it was a bigger thing as some would hope, it would have some new music one would think. Still a cracking Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow band though! Cheers.

  68. 68
    Tracy(Zero the Hero)Heyder says:

I am not discounting the value or impact the Old Classics have on the crowds at concerts. Been to a zillion concerts and yes, it is always the same. The Hits are the main crowd pleasers from any band. That is a given. Of course regarding the “Rainbow Tribute” outing, it is obvious that the bulk of the songs would be from the past. But to discount a warm welcome to a new album and new music being included in this effort I believe is a little naïve. 11 years after “Bent Out of Shape” was released, Ritchie put a new band together and put out another Rainbow Album, “Stranger in Us All” and toured it, playing an average of 6 new songs, 10 older songs and 4 Deep Purple songs (Mk2/3). I would say that is a good ratio and the new stuff was well accepted. This formula would work now. But either way, No New Material means Rainbow Tribute…. Period.

The fact that I m kinda restless regarding the upcoming shgows and me still not having been able to decide(…)if I should go, based on practical and healthissues does not mean I exclude the possibility these shows are going to be very special and very very good.

I do not have the insights in the psyches of people like Blackmore or Turner.

All this amateur psychobabble from people who just wants to have a hit at someone who is exposing himself, his passion for the music and his part in it, I think it is despicable.

My personall guess is that it was decided somehow the tag RAINBOW would sell better than his own name, which puzzles me, I always felt his name was bigger than the rest .

If a band is a band when they perform together and or record together , it is a matter of opnion I think.
Although I tend to side with JLT and (…)Tracy on this.

    It is not a band.
I d define a band as an entity with evolution, history, growing together, for some time.
This is a temporarily attempt to play those old rainbow tunes again for an audience that would give half an arm and leg for seeing them .

Its getting painful if Doogie is the real Doogie(I suppose THS knows and because they dont comment in such a way I should doubt about it I ll accept it)and what he says is true.

Both Glenn and Joe have great talents and a big backcatalogue to be proud of.
But indeed, they tend to “overdo it” during interviews and thus make their overall integrity suffer.
People are simple in that sense they check out,not giving an honest view of the whole picture just because they dislike certain manners.

It is a lie Joe never wrote about anything than love, heartache and so on.

This is just one example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WvshsjYCgg

So silly childish remarks about his non importance, being just a limited AOR singer, I ll wipe my ass with it, excuse my French.

And yes, JLT wears a wig.
We know that for decades now.
    Do you know what?
A lot of them did or do.

JLT still has all his vocal abilities and is getting older.
Who can say they can sing like him?
Who can say they reached older age without looking not like they were 30 years of age?
