I Dunno.. But I expected more. It somehow just doesn’t cut…This looks more like some leftover stuff. There is no magic in it. And the musicians look like they are going thru the motions. No real feel to this..sorry…

Its very good song. They would force Gillan to sing a little bit harder and scream as modern technology would help them. It remais me a little bit of Purple soon forgotten meets Black Sabbath.
May 5th, 2011 at 10:08To have a real classic the song could have a better arrangement as the best riff is beeing played as a final solo. The very “ozzy” slow moment would have better use and also killer hammond solo from Mr. Lord would be welcomed.
Hovewer Iommi still managed to pull off great solo, even if it remains me one of his solos from circa headless cross period.
Nevertheless its still the best song that Iommi crafted in a long time. Better than anything on last Heaven and Hell album.

Even so, I thought it was a great song. Whether or not it is someone’s left-over makes no difference to me, neither does it matter that it seems to have come with little effort. When dealing with the kind of talent and experience in that room, it doesn’t take much to throw together a little magic (then again–who is to say it was that easy). It still shows the youngsters how it’s done, and anything that sounds like it could come from Purpendicular is a classic in my book.

The best song I’ve heard in a long time!
May 6th, 2011 at 03:58Holy Water, less Iommi and no Lord but more keys in the mix, more like Gillan’s last solo album work but heavy rock style song. A bit better than this, and I didn’t get into this at first but I have to admit the SF melody works much better for me this way. This also grows… nice way to salvage one of the more annoying things to me about SF, a song I only like for Jon’s work, nothing else. I also think Purple record too many songs of the SF approach to hard rock. It’s become like their signature way of structuring most of the songs, mid-tempo safety zone. It works here though, good enough… crank it up!

May 6th, 2011 at 10:51Unfortunately, I feel the singing is missing the mark. Ian does not sound 1) into it and 2) like he put much effort into coming up with a good melody. This would certainly be a forgettable track on any DP release.
Whoever said that this is the best thing Ian has done since before Abandon is smoking something. There are many post-Abandon DP tracks that blow this out of the water.

the heavy guitar of Iommi and the heavy Hammond riffs by Jon Lord work perfectly together. I always thought that it would be great to mix Iommi with a heavy organ. They should do a project together. A symbiose of “Mater Of Reality” and “Deep Purple In Rock”.
And yes I miss a little organ-solo in the song also.

Larry you are right, and after listen to video from YouTube I must add “I MISS JON LORDs SOUND”. Don is great – but it’s only Jon who can produce the real Hammon sound for Purple – just like Ritchie is THE sound of Purple on guitar.

May 8th, 2011 at 14:22Gillan still has it. Like in DP’s last 2 studio albums, he aged gracefully and his voice getting deeper and darker could make him a heavy crooner. On stage, on the other hand, he’s not as brilliant, since he continues to sing the same songs over and over. Time to play more new songs, including that new one with Iommi.

May 8th, 2011 at 20:55@44: this is actually from Heraklion,Greece. The bassist that stood in for Roger is Nick Fyffe of Jamiroquai fame – he’s also played with the guys sometime at Sunflower Jam. It was reported that Roger won’t be joining them in Cyprus as well, but will possibly return for the rest of the dates, when his wife will have given birth to their baby.

May 9th, 2011 at 10:49IG does sound good in this but he would do given that it’s a studio recording and he’s not out of breath from running onto stage, he’s probably sober and he’s probably reading the lyrics from a prompt sheet (glasses) and it’s at a very safe tempo as Larry pointed out. Not that I’m knocking it, I like it. I liked it immediately – which is actually a problem. It’ll wear thin very quickly. Not that it matters that much – it is after all a charity single by rock luminaries which is intended to sell millions globally and raise money for a cause. An album of this material? No thank you… Gillan and Iommi together for a proper album? Now that’s another matter…

But after the last demise of MK 2 , mind you now 18 years ago, did dissappoint in the area of compositional strenght.
Possibilities :
1. Roger lost it over the years.
2.He did not bother anymore.
