That after gig moment

Ian Gillan’s message to the fans recorded in his hotel room after the last gig in São Paulo. Kinda puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?

Thanks to Caramba TV.

I don’t want to come off glum and doomsdayish here, but I sensed a more grimacing feel to this impromptu greeting. I have a really bad feeling about his demeanor here. Call me the skeptic here, but my gut instinct says there is more to this ‘Cold’ than our hero wishes to convey. He has dealt with colds and throat problems throughout his career. It’s the Lead Singer’s biggest problem and their load to bare. And the hardest thing to deal with compared to all else in the band. But, he has never been one to feel prompted to discuss it or dwell on it. He has the confidence and is seasoned enough to know, there are good days and bad.
I can read him pretty well. I’ve had the opportunity to converse with him on many occasions after many gigs, and I detect an undertone here that is not a positive one……and very out of character.

    I hope I am wrong……

Stay well Mr. Gillan. Put on a little more weight too. It does the body good……

    Cheers

    Bob Lawrinz says:

I kinda agree with Tracy. I hope it is just him coming down from the natural high of the gig; the last gig for a while but I sense a little more.
    I hope I am wrong.
They really are the greatest and he remains the biggest star in the rock world.
After a lifetime of fandom I met them a little while ago for the first time. It was a real honour and what a joy. In fact, a very humbling experience. No airs of pretension, genuine interest and appreciation. These are super human beings first and rock stars second.
Thank you Ian, Roger, Ian, Steve, Don and all that went before.
Continued success, health & wealth to you.

I was there and talked to him that day, before the concert. Ian had been harshly criticized in Brazil in the previous days. Four gigs before that one in São Paulo, when they played in Porto Alegre, the cold had nearly removed his voice. Some hasty critics decreed Gillan “couldn’t sing”. That night, besides the cold, Ian sang very well. He retreated to his corner behind the drums during the solos to meditate and take a good sip of whatever he had to drink, but then he went back to the front of the stage like Popeye after eating his spinach. The man IS strong. But, anyway, he isn’t 25 anymore. That’s not a demerit – wish I could become 63 with that pace in which he lives. If the touring wasn’t so heavy, it would be much easier. But then, they seem to love the road and if it wasn’t so heavy they wouldn’t be in Brazil every year. The Gillan I saw backstage managed to do what I thought was impossible: improve the respect I already had towards his work.

    mindcrime says:

Well…never saw him like this! But it only makes him deserve even more respect from us all. Music in not the most important thing in one’s life (well…at least, usually) but when you’ve listened to some folks for most part of your life, and you’ve seen them on stage at least a dozen times, it’s like they’ve become family. And when a family member has problems, be it a cold, surgery, accidents, major illness, or even, simply, age, I only can say: keep strong, take care. Hey gyus, you’re not a 5 member band, it’s you and us, we’ll never leave you alone!
    A BIG HUG TO I.G.

Tabs is slang word for cigarettes

  15. 15
    Crimson Ghost says:

Ah, thank you… but just look at most singers, they smoke.
Ian smokes usually when he’s drinking or has been drinking, so you can guess if he is doing one, he is doing the other… it does take it’s toll, so there has to be a balance. But the thing is, how do you schedule drinking and smoking? You just have to cut way back or completely stop, or it will consume you, sooner or later.

Rare to have someone be so candid. I was happy to see it & wish them all good health.

    andre sihotang says:

    So that’s the problem.

He is really gentleman, acknowledge his inability to do properly almost several hours after the concert. Yes, many other vocalists had bad times like this on stage. But I’ll ask, who other vocalist ever did apologize like this immediately after the show, I don’t know.

Wish I could be like him, truly reveal my weakness to the people soon after my fault occurred. Usually, people still in shocking situation/emotion for a long time after he made mistakes and take some time to acknowledge his fault to people.

You’re my truly hero. Ian Gillan. I wish you health and happiness, hope you can overcome your problems and do rockin’ all over the world again!!

Gillan rooolz! But he’s had on/off vocal problems for 30 years now, and he’s definitely reached a point where he should seek some professional counseling to keep it going, and maybe even sing better than he’s done for decades.

There’s probably a million things he can do (and a million things he should avoid) to get his voice back in shape. He has, without question, raped and abused his voice his entire carreer, with smoking, alcohol and probably not one single warm-up/warm-down technique. Like any other true rock ‘n’ roller.

I think that if he’d started using a lot of professional vocal techniques, like opera singers use, he could get back into form and keep it going for at least another 10-15 years. That doesn’t mean that he should start singing opera, only get the range back, and maybe even the crystal clear screams.

    Danny says:

I think this was IG’s way of telling the fans that the guys do get ill and seldom if ever talk about it. Yes I thought he looked tired but with their schedule and their age I am not surprised. Hell I know guys have his age who can’t walk a flight of stairs. I only wish the guys would pace themselves a little better and space out their tours a bit. I think they would last longer….but of course make less money.

God bless you all:-) People like Ian should teach the children of the world to get sense in their life, to beliefe in friendship, to have respect of elder people and to love and have fun and to ….rock :-)))))).
but how is the reality? mtv is dead, the kids get junk music, junk food, junk education, junk parents, junk movies and so on.

I am now 59 years old, and I always was an optimist, now I tend to become a pessimist, not because of my age, because of the development of the world……..

So it makes me so happy to see young people on good concerts, young people who dont like mainstream, they are the hope for a future in love and peace, and I often pray, they may win against the evil:-)

God bless you all, and keep on rocking for a free world, yeeaahhhh

I’ve met you in person and been to a several dozen of your shows, Deep Purple and your solo shows. I have traveled thousands of miles to see you, many times. Ian we love you so much. The United States fans still love you and Roger, Paciey, Don, and Steve too. Please tour here again soon, and take care of yourself. We need you.

  36. 36
    purplepriest1965 says:

I do subscribe to the view shows should have been cancelled when in too much poor health

False sentiments prevail when saying how tough and committed he is still doing it.

Real committment would have been quitting smoking and drinking 30 years ago

There are more people still going to their work when they are that ill or worse
In any case it should be forbidden to do so
Its no use for both parties

If you enjoy IG seeing like this YOU are ill too

It cant be about the money, they have enough

Take some rest, let Blackmore deliver a few compositions for a last final cracker , he can do that asleep, give us the 40th Anniversary we want and then pursue your solo career, please.

Yours, truly, a man who still is a fan but does not shut up just because its forbidden to be critical
    You know who you are…..

  37. 37
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

All I have to say here is that I have no problem with….’the Show Must go On attitude”.

Been there, done that, as the Lead Singer and Drummer with my cover band ‘LOzT CAUz’ (click my name). That being said, had there been what I have constantly promoted and advocated, some ‘instrumental tunes’ in the works as a backdrop and something to rely on for a CHANGE and for improvisation sake (such as ‘B owed to G, or ‘A-2000’, or bring in ‘Sun Goes Down’ and jam it out for a long while) Mr. Gillan could thereby have a little break, when he as the Front Man and Singer could sit back while the band does some improvisation, and it would be totally accepted as normal, and in the end take Deep Purple back to the day when they used to do just that…..JAM!!!!!!

I don’t want to be contradictory here. I don’t wish to go back to the day when the 30 minute song took up 1 third of the gig, but in this case, they should rely on their laurels and fill in where they have to in order to pull off a proper gig and to fill for their hero whom is lacking for the moment.

Again, you may never know when the others are not quite ‘up to par’, but in the Front Man’s position, it’s hard to mask…….

So, based on this little ‘One Eye Opener to the Masses’, I think it’s time the Band partakes in a little ‘Plan B’ position……just for ‘Professional Sake’….

Oh, Priest……F..K You with your typical ‘Blackmore’ worship issue…….
You never change and it ain’t the answer…….That ended the second time HE QUIT Deep Purple…..Nice Try though. Sorry you can’t face the fact or the Present. Probably the reason for your name….PP1965. You are stuck in the past……It’s 2009 now…..GET OVER IT!!!! Whatever happened in 1965, was THEN. It’s not Gillan or Steve Morse’s fault. Whatever it was, it obviously wasn’t worth it….And whoever it was, they obviously MOVED ON. Just like Ritchie…..to ‘Blackmore’s Night’…..Stop bringing Deep Purple down because you can’t get past Blackmore ‘Abandoning’ you…….(hmmmm, I finally understand the album title ‘Abandon’).

Now go pull down Ritchie’s Tights and Suck his ‘Little Brown Jug’…..

    Cheers

    Dennis Hanna says:

We should remember that Ian Gillan is 64 this year and Ian Paice is 61. Deep Purple’s touring schedule would knacker guys half their age and it’s amazing what they do. Add to this Purple’s fan base which is truly global as opposed to some artists who are well known in the UK but unheard of elsewhere. This means that Purple regularly tour far off countries and have to endure many longhaul flights as a result. We all like to think that being in a rock band is all glitz and glamour but we should remember it’s also bloody hard work. I hope both Messrs Gillan and Paice make a speedy recovery.

  41. 41
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    PP1965:

Number one, you are correct…..just as you couldn’t refuse to do your normal Blah Blah Blackmore whining, I couldn’t resist calling you on it.

As far as Me and TC, I would have to point out your ‘incorrectness’ there.

I was one of the FEW whom went Toe to Toe with him in a discussion based on mine and most other’s view of the Tribute Band issue and the Name of such Tribute Band, while keeping my composure and having the correspondence end with a descent finish, while you and other ‘Starstruckers’ salivated and basically drooled ‘over the rainbow’ whereby putting you in the vulnerable position of Doggy Style for Toto to have his way with you…..

I haven’t been silenced either. Been here all along doing what I do. Commenting on the various Blog Topics, while I would have to state that it was you who disappeared for a while and due to the fact that there has been very little, if any MIB crying ‘since you’ve been gone’, I must say, The Verdict is In…..Tis You whom ranks as the highest ‘Man in Tights Wanker Spanker’…….

    Cheers

    purplepriest1965 says:

You are right that I mistook your silence for being beaten
Neither was I when I was away
I was just fed up with the style of certain people here
Just did not have the energy to go in debate

As I said before, writing here is a dubious affair because why would and should one try to convince, please or whatever…..others here?

I dont think you kept your composure, far from it.
Maybe you should check your health too?

  43. 43
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    Composure??????

I think I did well, considering I am a sarcastic Prick, whom truly loves the band Deep Purple and is quite annoyed by those whom wish to capitalize on the NAME without regard to real credence or effort to ‘Expand’ on it. Whitesnake expanded on DP, Rainbow expanded on DP, Gillan Band expanded on DP, Warhorse expanded on DP, Captain Beyond expanded on DP, etc……’Over the Rainbow’ isn’t expanding….they are rehashing…..hence…..TRIBUTIZING!!!

So as far as your statement about ‘convincing’ others…..the only convincing comes from YOU trying to convey a DEAD ISSUE. Blackmore is GONE from DP. Sorry to bring you to 2009, Mr. 1965, but the facts are the facts. All else is in your little Past desires which can be put in the same place the rest of your little failures have been compiled. A lonely place full of CATS. Meouuuuuu.

Sorry, but as in one your ‘Blackmore’/’JLT’ Purple daze songs suggests….”The Truth Hurts”….

Still love you man….just wish you could stop trying to ‘convince about a dead issue and face the present facts…..That would half the battle ….and “the battle rages on”.

Oh and as far as my health?……53 and still hunting, fishing, cutting firewood for the fireplace, going to concerts all over place, and still Kicking Your Ass…..

    Cheers

  44. 44
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

Oh and I left out one major thing…..
    Still getting LAID consistently…..YOU?????

Me thinks that what the Cats are for….as with your wish for Blackmore to return…..Cat’s are there until Pussy returns to your life……good luck!!! I know your kind. Always searching for that which is out of reach.

Now, no hard feelings, I just love a good fight….so let’s quit now because this is a landslide…..Nice try though.

Its not my regular thing to insult people, on the contrary

This time I was only responding to what Mister Sacrasm, duhhhhhhhhhhhh, thinks of himself

No real pun intended, I m too mellow for that

Tracy one moments spits on people around and he s indulging in his so called sarcasm trait and the other moment he says he still loves me…..

When you do that, does the cat face you or are you looking up it’s ass?

And, just another point of clarification….Just because I call you or anyone else on their constant gibberish regarding the everso repeated MIB syndrome, it doesn’t mean I have any animosity toward you….quite the contrary. You give me the ammo, and I love to ‘lock and load’….
You keep spewing it, I will keep calling you on it…..

After all those writings from you it is clear you have a problem with RB, JLT, cats and homo sexuals.
You probably come up now with parallels between them?
Maybe its time to seek some help?

Otherwise, your so called having fun at the cost of others becomes more and more predictable and boring.

You love to lock and load?
    Dont make me laugh,man.
It sounds like Uncle Ted from A to Z, also very boring.

  59. 59
Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    Freddy Who????? No Who Cares?

Priest, my Rants are repeated ONLY when folks such as yourself REPEAT your same MIB issues, NO MATTER WHAT THE SUBJECT.

You never address my statements as to what they are actually pertaining to. Why? Because you don’t wish to admit to the fact that I don’t RANT about New and Innovative entries. I RANT at those such as yourself, whom are so self centered with your little MIB issue that you basically spit in the eyes of those whom have moved on (Along with Blackmore) and respectfully appreciate the Band for what it is and where they have gone. You constantly bring up the issue FIRST. You are a major hypocrite when you state that I am predictable, when YOU are the one who is the most predictable of all. If you cut your finger, toe, leg, arm or whatever, the inevitable healing factor is the scab over the wound upon healing. It is what it is. You make the same old cut, no matter what the area, but it’s the same either way. When you cut with your MIB BS, I scab it over every time. You know why?……

    It’s what I do….

There was a time when you used to offer something other than the whining that TMIB was gone from Purple…..NOW? It’s all you do. Thus, my calling you on it has become one of my FAVORITE THS Past-times….

Now, you say it’s clear that I have a problem with RB, JLT, cats and homo sexuals. WHERE DID THAT COME FROM pertaining to what I wrote above? I love RB (Not in the HOMO way, you refer to. I’ll leave that to you). I have been a major fan of his since finding out he was the guitarist in Deep Purple back in 1969. I have all of his material in and out of Deep Purple. Been to see him with Blackmore’s Night. My issues are not with him. I enjoy what he did and does. My problem is with the closed minded selfish PRICKS like you, whom constantly Bash Steve Morse due to your little MAN IN TIGHTS leaving your perfect little Purple Line-up and Abandoning you. GET OVER IT!!!! It’s Been 15 years!!!!!!

JLT is another story. Love his voice. Great singer. What else do you want from me? I have to like his Poofiness too? Like I stated way back. He is meant to be heard, not seen…..IMO. Big Deal.

Cats? I like cats. I’ve had cats. I prefer Dogs. If the cat can handle my dogs, he can stay. I have two 175 pound Neapolitan Mastiffs. So far, the cats that have come around have become Dog Poop….Literally. Oh well. That’s the food chain for you.

Homos? Sorry. I have no time for it. I don’t care what one does with himself or with whoever. It’s truly none of my business. But I do not have any respect for those whom live that life style and push into the public realm. I’ve had a couple of Homo friends. They knew where I stood on the issue and that’s how we remained friends. They respected my view and I theirs. They didn’t push it in my face and we maintained a fine relationship. To each his own. I just happen to believe it is wrong and disgusting. That’s my feelings on the matter and there is nothing that will change it. So, if you are upset at me because you think I don’t like your sexual preference, you are wrong rope smoker. Just keep the smoke to yourself and we will get along great. If you start preaching your gayness, and start blowing your little Rope Smoker Smoke-rings at me, we are done……That’s your business and I want no part of it…..so keep it to yourself. I don’t dislike Homos. I just don’t like what they do…….and nobody needs to know about it.

    Fair enough?

Sorry you hate Ted as much as you hate the Smiley Fiddler. You are obviously the one with Issues. Maybe it’s the American Guitarists you truly hate. Maybe You are the one with the problem. You and Freddy are obviously American Bashers……..so stop pointing fingers.

Lighten up. Stop smokin’ Rope and switch to Dope. Maybe you will re-expand your mind and return to making entries about something besides “oh where, oh where did my little Ritchie go” BS.
    BORING!!!!!

Learning, the sort of social aspect of talking and writing….
    You?

I think that you think only the ones with vast knowledge like CG has should write here?

    Maybe you are right
I often think and say as well that one should not engage but only listen and study as long one has too limited knowledge

In the meantime this is a forum where there is a freedom of speech

And I think lots of people here, including me, are entitled to discuss things.

I m a fan since 77, bought loads of non and DP related music, saw thousands of shows, engaged myself in developing myself through studies and so on……

    But even then…..

You often seem to act hight and mighty because you studied.
It gets so tedious when people do that.
I could be without the intention to act arrogant, I know

Ofcourse I resent real stupid, almost non thinking persons too.
So much for trying to avoid double standards

    Cheers.

    @ 59

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, so ridicilous this all.

Where did you get the idea I m gay?
I just get bored and annoyed by the repeated outings that you dont like them.
Now you say you dont but at the same time……
    You are confused I think.
Thats not meant as an insult
I have conflicting ideas, opinions, feelings about subjects as well.
But I dont do negative statements about those persons you seem to think they are gay.
    Why should I?
I was 10 or 14 calling someone a HOMO when I did not have anything else to say.
Maybe you should grow out of that too?

Very often it seems you want to see yourself as some bad ass mother fucker, Mister Macho, Mister Tough who kicks hippies, gays and so on in the butt.
    Not to forget Obama?

I do have gay friends as well, but I m not gay myself.
Even when I was, whats your point?

I also think sex between the same same sex is kinda unnatural and appaling behaviour and do not approve of gay and lesbian marriage and so on, so……I wrote it before, did you forget or misread?

    Ad SEE BELOW.

People are so strange in their thinking.

I have my serious doubts about a lot of Muslims in Western society but I m NOT a racist as they often cry out when one says something critical about them.
I m PRO Israel so how can I be a racist?

Although I was mildly raised in a Christian surrounding I stopped believing around my 12th.

I just could not accept it all

What is so just about very bad people getting very old and my mother at 39 while she was a very kind woman?!
What is so just about all those suffering people around the globe and saying THATS GODs WILL?!

I think, like RB once said btw, that ALL relgions should stop and that we should start something new.

Like RB, I do NOT have a ONE DIMENSINAL MIND like you suggest all the time.
Luckily other people can think and reason themselves, a lot of them not unfortunately thats true,…..
So WHY on earth should I try to waste energy on you all the time?!

I suppose that was a rethorical question.

    Roper smoke smoke rings things
    What the f…k are those?

I do use some medication for better sleeping and drink 2 or 3 glasses wine a day, Im NOT on drugs but I m addicted to sports.

What are you implying besides the ridicilous point I m gay?!

I do not hate you or Mister Mac Donald smile
    I do not hate easily
I get sad when I hear HIS PLAYING, so misplaced

Apart from that much of his soli sound the same
His compositions are NOT on the same par as the MK 2 material

Its the over and over old discussion
Its EVIDENT that RB was and is a better composer, espescially for DP.
I tried to understand the choice for SM for 15 years now.

    I just dont get it.

They could have chosen so many!!!!

I do not have a hate for Americains
On the contrary, I love loads of music and other culture from over there

I love Dave Menikettis singing and playing
I just think he should not be placed between DP musicians, well maybe in a setting OUTSIDE the DP sound.

    AD from above

So I do have a strong anti feeling towards gays too and I also have friends in those circles.
But I do not mingle too much in discussions normally because I feel a bit uncomfortable telling other people how they should live
As long it happens with LOVE and respect why should I vote for an law agains gay marriages?

Im not convinced THS is all about vast knowledge. Maybe a few think they know the ‘cut and thrust’ of it all. I very much doubt it. Best to take it all with a ‘pinch of salt’………

Limited knowledge is far more popular and acceptable.

Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

    Priest,

The ONLY reason the Gay point came about, was because YOU brought it up out of the Blue…..see #58.

Since you brought it up AGAIN, using the word HOMO is actually the proper short term for Homo Sexual. It’s the actual term regarding that particular style of sexual preference. If you feel the need to be PC and go with the Political Flow and call them Gay, which actually means Happy, that is your prerogative…..(just don’t call me Happy). Call it what you want. It’s all just a smoke screen towards being forced to accept something that is WRONG. Thank God Adam and Eve weren’t GAY. We would not be having this discussion right now. Again, as with all of my sarcasm, my point was that since you brought it up, maybe you were trying to come out of the closet and let us all know…..he he he. But that would make you Happy, and usually you are not, so it’s all very confusing.

Again, whether or not you are gay, is no concern to me until you make that your only concern and begin shoving it down my throat (figuratively of course). Then I have no more patience and will move on. As I stated……To each his own, but when one keep hammering ONE thing all the time, they open themselves up for constant return of response toward the subject. Hence the Blackmore issue. You complain that I repeat, but you ignore that what I repeat is in direct response to your never ending ability to Repeat the same thing, NO MATTER WHAT BLOG TOPIC. It’s like you have turrets and all of a sudden, you just blurt out “Blackmore is God!!!!!!”. It’s just an uncontrollable impulse I presume…….

Anyway, to all my Gay/Homo friends……No HARD Feelings……(Literally).

Your opinion regarding Steve Morse belonging in Deep Purple is also something you continually REPEAT. No matter what the Blog subject. The fact is this…..(No Opinion but FACT). Steve Morse IS the guitarist for Deep Purple. Therefore, it is the sound they for the past 15 years have maintained and IS what they Sound like. This is not an Opinion. This is a FACT. Now, whether or not ‘in your opinion they sound good to you, That is Your Opinion and Taste in music, but to state that He isn’t the Right man for the job? Come on. That is the Purple sound that developed when your little Pointy Hat, tight wearing Minstrel ‘Abandoned Ship’. To continually cry about it makes you that self centered, unhappy complaining Cat person (it’s a known fact that those whom seek Cats for filling the hole in their life, are chronic depressants)…..GET A DOG. You’ll feel better… Your view of things will change immensely. I promise……but one thing is for sure……Every time you go into your Blackmore Worshipping tirade, I WILL respond…and that’s Your Fault…..so don’t complain when I do.

    Cheers

    AndreA,

No, ” Gallows and Argus”. My original Neo was named “Kraven”. These are amazing animals and are one of the oldest breeds. They were used as guard dogs to the kings in the castles back in the day. The Gargoyle image was derived from this fabulously friendly, yet protective beast….unfortunately as with all Large breeds, they only live fro around 10 years…..I truly miss my first….Kraven.

Tracy Heyder aka Zero the Hero says:

Yeah Priest, I’m OK too….Thanks for asking.

Look, I think it’s time I clear up this mess that constantly gets misconstrued here….

You and TC have made mention that I repeat the same old stuff…..as though I offer nothing else to the table.

On your behalf regarding Blackmore/Morse, and with TC regarding OTR and JLT.

Here is where you misrepresent me and I will clarify how.
I make entries on Blogs where I have something to offer. I have given my humble opinions and expressed my knowledge on many occasion and on most of the blog subjects. Once I do so, that is that. I don’t need to keep on going back and forth on the issue that I have already expressed about, unless I feel I left something out, or if something else comes to mind. So when I make my entry, it is usually a one or two time thing and then the subject goes on and on with everyone else expressing themselves.

What happens is, eventually YOU will make your typical Blackmore/Morse verbal vomit and then I will come back on and respond to it….

    It’s a vicious circle.

TC obviously only reads the articles pertaining to him and OTR, whereby he obviously will only see that picture and of course, My opinion regarding that is consistent and I stand by it. But it irritates him and he Knee jerks to it and then Bam!!!!! Here We Go Again…

    Cheers

Now, back to the Blog Subject…

As I stated at #6, and after reading some of the other subjects involving Ian’s interviews an what not….I’m still skeptical about his demeanor here. Especially when it comes to his answers regarding a New Purple record. It seems as though he avoids any conversation regarding that…..It’s been 4 years since ROTD. By now they are usually chomping at the bit to make a new one…..
