Cold spirits of ice

stowe_Horizons_2026

Here’s a bit of the trainspotting boogaloo. The property known as the Horizons in Stowe, Vermont, has been renovated into a posh second home and was a subject of an extended exposé in the Stowe Magazine, issue Winter-Spring 2025/2026. For all your interior decorating tips of the historic venue, kindly proceed to the online version starting on page 208.

Thanks to George M. for the heads-up.

I was living about 50 miles north of Stowe, Vermont and was actually roaming around the area in late May / early June of 1984 when the Purples had first arrived there – unbeknownst to me. Probably best that I didn’t know that my favourite band of all time had taken up temporary residence in my neck of the woods at that particular time, as I might have been apprehended for stalking!! 😁

Here’s a link to a great article from a local paper The Vermonter which goes into detail about the Purps’ time in Stowe in 1984……………https://www.vermonter.com/deep-purple-vermont/

I have a preference for The Playhouse in Stowe where, alas!, according to local lore the ghost of the late Mitzi Dupree is still a presence and where on some nights you will be able to distinctly hear ping pong balls a-p(l)oppin’ in the hall. No one knows where they come from or where they might go.

Paranormal ping pong balls of uncertain origin and destination, right up my alley!

Nice little dive bar type to write the great Perfect Strangers album. 😁

We ride past the former Playhouse on the bike path when we visit Stowe. Stopped in years ago at what has been for decades a restaurant. More than one, in fact. They had a “Deep Purple” mixed drink. I thought, What is this? How can I resist? Wasn’t bad. Sadly, no sounds of ping-pong balls in the building. Mitzi’s ghost must have been in Bangkok or Singapore that day.

#4, IG met “Mitzi Dupree” when he was in Black Sabbath. But as the song says, they did meet on a plane & she was in his seat. IG didn’t seem to be too picky about that. And he did say the talent with ping pong balls was real.

and I’m sure the flight was jolly.

Best quote I found about the promising artiste was this:

    QUOTE

She had amazing abs! I took a friend of mine to see her & we got signed ping pong balls. We were the only women in the audience. My friend’s toddler stuck the ball in his mouth and his father said: “That’s my boy!

And you guys prefer lyrics about non-flying wizards jumping to their death in some arid region, I really don’t know what’s with you! 🙄 I’ll take reality in all its vivid color over that any day, chance encounters on airplanes that actually fly included.
