Internationales Essener Pop And Blues Festival

Two new video fragments of the early Purple in full flight have surfaced on YouTube. Shot at the Essen Grugahalle in Germany on October 11, 1969. It was the Internationales Essener Pop And Blues Festival and other acts on the bill included Pink Floyd, Tangerine Dream, Nice, and Hardin/York. We hope more of this footage exists somewhere and that one day we’ll be able to see all of it.

Wow, this is a truly awesome discovery! It’s a delight to see such clear close-ups of Jon’s hands in Wring That Neck, and his playing is sublime. Another reminder of why we loved the man and his music and why we were so upset when he departed.

On youtube, there are a number of clips of Floyd at the same gig, totalling about 40 minutes. Surely there’s more footage of Purple at this gig… fingers crossed that it surfaces soon!

Many thanks to niceclips2 and Andrey Gusenkov.

Amazing stuff, thank you! What I wouldn’t give to see a full concert of DP showing nothing but Jon working his magic like in the first clip – truly wonderful.

You hope????? Yawn already, just another astronomical price being asked, outside of having laready accepted a deal he doesn’t know how will turn out. I’d get that in writing, and to the paty in question, I’d ask so much more it isn’t funny. Offered me too much but not enough for the other guy, and the other guy should know he’s still asking money even though they’re supposedly dealing. Just thought you’d want to know, mate, I can prove it down under.

Just noticed something… does anyone else think it sounds like the Perfect Strangers intro at 0:41?

    Dave Smale says:

Thanks for airing these clips, brilliant stuff, especially from Jon – and yes, as Robert Prior suggests, there is a strong hint of “Perfect Strangers” in there at 0.41 ! Perhaps it was something Jon kept on the back burner for years & years & then decided to use?

Awesome stuff thank you! The kind of find that gets me excited about the band all over again! Was hoping to see Ritchie on there… oh well. LRT, your posts seem to be answering a post that is not there. So, there is 20 min. worth and someone wants alot of money for it i assume? I’m Very curious….

great stuff and very good quality considering the date of the footage. There is no fade in or out on any of these footage…to me this means these are clips from longer versions…look at the axact 1 minute duration for both videos…

I cant get enough of these videos from the VERY god old days, when Purple WAS Purple. For you who didt not see them in 69-73 – I can only say that tyhey where the best band in world. FORGET Zeppelin, Sabbath and all the others. NO one came even close to Purple.
Now it’s sadly impossible even to drem about a Mrk II reunion, but I still have my photos from these golden days. And then the LPs, CDs, Videos, newspaper cuts etc.

Maybe it has been triggered due to Jon;s death.
I dont know, as long as it happens.

Yeah, it is always about the money.
Are these short clips meants as teasers for bidders?

I m almost convinced there is a lot more.
What saddens me deeply I will not live long enough to see it all.
    Bastards!

This is great! Everything “they” find with Mrk II is fine with me. And, yes, I do believe Im hearing the intro to Perfect Strangers..
But I wish “they” would find something more from their last stand..Im talking about Mrk II 1973. They toured Europe, England, USA
and Japan, there must be som footage from some gig somewhere or some intervjues or something!! They had already been on top of the mountain
in 1972 in Japan and it resulted as we all know in “Made in Japan” (Best live album ever!!) and now, 1973, they knew it was the end, Gillan looked different in a beard and short hair, but they gave it their best shot all the way back to Japan again, 29 june 1973. Lets hope and pray “they” will find “something”, all we have (and its great) is 3 songs from New York, there must be more somewhere…

Tracy (Zero the Hero) Heyder says:

I remember seeking back when I was seeking every little snippet of anything Purple after they had disbanded in 1976, hoping and praying for their return. After 1985 when they finally did reunite, I continued my search for all things Purple and have acquired an amazing amount of rarities that are now stored away in a mountain of boxes. I finally reached the point where although these 2 vids are very interesting to say the least, they only piss me off due to now having the desire to see a whole show or at least a whole song instead of a few notes which back then I would have paid dearly for. These short clips do nothing but irritate rather than sooth….Hell, if I dig deep into my pile, I may even have these in a longer form. I’m almost getting inspired enough to do some excavating.

    Cheers

@Tracy, You do not have Essen 1969 footage sorry. @ Wiktor There is 1973 Japan footage. Not sure of the duration but Simon R. has teasingly mentioned watching it a few times. I asked him about it and got no response. Not letting go of it! Yet….

    Wiktor says:

Thanks for the information Scott, but can´t we make Simon an offer he can´t refuse? (Just kidding)
but there must be “something” and not just in Japan, there must have been some film cameras in Europe, USA, England that
    catch them before their fall…..
    Lets hope so!!

I was there, 18 years old and so electrizesed by this music, till today! One of my loves in my life! It was saturday evening, maybe 22.00 or 22.30! I’ll never forget this day! I often told about it! I’ve heard something about DP before, HUSH naturally, HALLELUJAH, how incredible! And I was sure, I have to go to Essen, what ever will happened! An I came in, without any ticket, really, cause the glass of the one door was broken down! DP came on stage (before NICE and PINK FLOYD!) and opend with the intro of AND THE ADRESS followed by SPEED KING (may be Kneal and Pray at this time) WOW!!!! And than CHILD IN TIME …!!! What a voice, so psychodelic, this music was totally new, and not only for me! What shall I say, thank’s god, it was so wonderful!

I just stumbled upon these 2 YT clips today from the International Pop And Blues Festival on 11 October 1969 at the Grugahalle in Essen, Germany. I know this has been on the site before but Mandrake Root is longer and we now get Wring That Neck! Sadly the camera work is frustrating to say the least:

Looks like Joerg also posted this here with the correct 2 track/links. I goofed up and put the same link twice! I love the vintage stuff but Ritchie is only shown briefly and Roger not at all! This would be the first time any footage has turned up of Mandrake Root with the strobe light sequence that is always talked about during this period!
