Secret gig in Zurich

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1NaPdRkvmk

Deep Purple gave a closed private performance on December 18 at the Congress Centre in Zurich, Switzerland. According to Swiss websites 20min.ch and blick.ch, the gig was organized and financed by Swiss banker Stefan J. and three other individuals. About 1000 people attended the concert.

Reportedly, Ian Gillan started gig with the announcement “Hello and welcome to the Led Zeppelin reunion!” 😉

Thanks to Jörg Planer and Andree Schneider for the info.

“Hello and welcome to the Led Zeppelin reunion!”
    Heh, heh!

    Purpendicular says:

Great evening with a band who obviously had fun. It’s a great difference
to see them in such a familiar environment instead of e.g. the Hallenstadion.
These guys know how to play their instruments. Purple still rocks.

    George says:

notwithstanding the fact that Led Zeppelin was morepopular than Deep Purple, DP seems to be much more vital and fresh band. last albums of LZ were just shit, they hadn’t enough ideas to realase any new material. So, sorry for this words, but Jon Bonham died just in suitable time and his death just helped LZ to say any reason for spliting band! Bonham’s death was just reason.

So, DEEP PURPLE did a great job in 1984, when they reunioned and created such classic and GREATEST albums as “Perfect Strangers”, “House Of Blue Light”, “The Battle Rages On”, “Purpendicular”, “Bananas” and of course “RAPTURE OF THE DEEP” – these are the immortal classics for Deep Purple.
what about Led Zeppelin, they are no long able to create any proper studio album. I watched their Live on youtube (In O2) and it was just normal show. this show wasn’t as firefull, as fresh and as dynamic, as Deep Purple’s shows.

so, LONG LIVE TO DEEP PURPLE – THE MOST VITAL BAND IN ROCK’N’ROLL

Hahaha, that’s real Gillan humour !!!

    absolutely Right!
When I first read this words: “Hello and welcome to the Led Zeppelin reunion!” I just can’t help laughing loooool
    :)))))

Interesting observations above, George. Very true.

Recently I spoke with a famus Italian journalist and He said that Deep Purple Fans have always been invidious about Zeppelin success.
I have seen their last live performance and I can say that thaey are nothing special(just listen to the stairway to heaven solo) and that they have not fun playing. This is sad.

Absolutely right, I saw this show on YouTube and it was just so so.
I won’t compare this show to ANY Deep Purple gigs. Dp has GREATEST charisma while playing on stage. Charisma, fire, joy, hard hard sound and FRESH atmosphere – this is what one can get from Deep Purple.

and LZ show it was just reunion, nostalgy and nothing more. Actually I won’t ever compare juinior Bonham’s drumming to Ian Paice. Listen even to intro of Pictures of Home on Montreux 2006. DP gigs – fire from the first seconds.

    George says:

And also, LZ was the part of more pop-culture, than music. DEEP PURPLE was always oriented ONLY to music

    Gillan’s The Best!!
    A Nice, Intelligent Humorous Line!!!

    Roberto says:

Jhon Bonham to me is very overrated while Paice is underrated(I am a drummer, just listen to what he does burn, fireball, the closure of mary long etc..).
But I think we can’t judge Zeppelin for this concert:they don’t play together from many years! But surely they have never been nothing special LIve(I have seen the song remains the same Dvd:just listen to the slow rock’n’roll)
About their success:I don’t care about it, if I have to do I should consider Britney Spears as the best singer in the world!!!!!!!

    Andre Sihotang (indonesia) says:

Oh..come on, Deep Purple is the best everlasting rock band in the world! I think Led Zeppelin is more popular BECAUSE they were not only music, but lifestyle, drugs, sex (remember girl with fish in the bath while Plant and Page only watch and play their ‘ball’). Just look at both of their career, DP after 30 years and still go on rockin’ all over the world, while LZ clearly stopped at 1980 and their members only had such .. carrer. So reunion is just reunion, nothing to do with music, it was just fun at all – of course not to mention Stairway TO heaven.
Well, after all only DP know how to entertain the audience while performing live even in their sixties (You can see how boring LZ concert with long solo from Page and Bonham beside their lullaby blues songs while in the other sides DP always show their company and business from five member together – NO ONE is the leader in music, they kept on fire even in 1993 when Blackmore and Gillan were having a deteriorated relationship). AND especially who can turnover Gillan from screaming in the sixty age. Are you guys agree with me??

    ormandy says:

As a Deep Purple fan, I’m not invidious about Led Zeppelin success. I just don’t think they’re all that great. I’ve tried to get into them, but for whatever reason they just don’t move me.

I agree George, the last albums of Led Zeppelin were just SHIT. And if we as Deep Purple fans are to say this, we get labeled with “Zepp envy.” LOL Very clever on Zeppelin fans part, don’t you think?

BTW, a true great rock performence there by DP.

    alf + says:

Hey! the Ian Gillan subconscious speak!, 39 years ago and led zep yet make to mr. IG shake the memory ( not envy surely, je!), not in vain Led Zep has selling about the double than DP 300 millions vs 120 millions??? no 100 millions, wow is a triple.
terrific humour, is a piece of shit.

    Paal Hanson says:

Never ever understood the hype concerning Led Zep. To me they always sounded like a 2nd. rate garage band. I guess Page fooled the crowds with his double guitar, and Plants screaming was always pitifull compared to Ian Gillan.

But they where carried into stardom on the same wave that DP and countless other late 60s early 70s acts. They did help re-write rock´n´roll, its just that DP was much more progressive and musically daring, and in the MK. II days from 69 to 73 they where the class of their generation! I was privileged to be at countless live shows in Copenhagen during those years, and DP was the kings of the crop.

However, it all subjective is it not?

I loved Purple form the first time I heard the intro to Speed King, and I´ve been along for the ride, during all the changes and I still love Purple!

  16. 16
    ormandy says:

Yeah, Purple are dying out there with 100+ million sold. LOL

BTW, Deep Purple does pretty well even without all the HUGE publicity that Led Zeppelin gets these days.

  17. 17
    alf + says:

I can´t tell who is the best DP OR LZ, because DP are my favourite band ever and 2nd is Iron Maiden, I don´t want look impartial (for me DP is much better, but for many others LZ are gods), but I can tell Black Sabbath EAT, HIT, SWALLOW, FUCK, SPIT to LZ
