The Making Of Bananas
The Swedish magazine "Slice" has done a new interview with Micheal Bradford about "the making of Bananas" among other things. Here is a few bits.

"This record wasn't a matter of re-creating 'Machine Head' or something. In fact, 'Machine Head' was great because it was a bold departure at the time. It sure didn't sound like 'Hush'. Deep Purple is great when they push themselves, and that's what they did. Even people who don't like 'Bananas' at first have said that they like it more and more once it sinks in."

"The band came in to record a rhythm track each day. Ian would come the following morning, and we would do the vocals before the band arrived to cut the next rhythm track. Ian would do a guide vocal during the recording of the rhythm track. That way, we cut a song a day."

"I'm very satisfied with 'Bananas'. Great songs, great playing, great singing. It has its own sound, so some will love it, and some won't, but at least it won't be ignored. I wouldn't trade the experience for the world."

Thanks to Slice and Michael Eriksson for the information.

Bananas Downunder
According to EMI Australia, "Bananas" will be released in Australia September 8. They also have a few words from Roger Glover on their webpage. Here is a few bits.

"Purpendicular was incredibly easy for us to realise at the time, while Abandon was quite a struggle. So we reckoned that Bananas would automatically be easier for us, and fortunately, it was."

"It all started with a little joke. About three years ago, I saw a photo of a man in a newspaper who was trying to hoist a huge banana tree onto the front of his bike. I said to Ian Gillan: 'Look Ian, here’s the title of our next album. We’ll call it Bananas'. Ian wasn’t really looking, he just said: 'Great idea.' Of course his enthusiasm was ironic, but somehow the thought remained in our heads."

Interview with Michael Bradford
There is a new interview with Michael Bradford done by Electric Basement, where Michael talks about his work with the new Deep Purple album, "Bananas", among other things. Here is a few bits.

"I believe we recorded 13 songs. My understanding is that "The Well-Dressed Guitar" will be on as a bonus track in certain countries like Japan, but it won't be on the main album listing. This is because it already appeared (in a different form) on a previous live album. So the album will have 12 tracks."

"I co-wrote a couple of songs. I worked out the arrangements on everything with the band. And I was always in "Record", so I could capture the feel.

""Haunted" was just penned. Roger had the main musical idea for it, and then Ian came with most of the lyrics. I do believe it has radio potential. We also had Paul Buckmaster do a string arrangement for it."

"The most impressive thing about Deep Purple is that they can really, really play their instruments. No loops, drum machines, samples. It's all them. Plus, they have the dexterity to take their music anywhere they want it to go. They're not limited by technique."

"I would gladly work with them, eat with them, or get drunk with them, hopefully all at the same time. They are great guys. There won't be many bands like them ever again. I had wanted to meet them ever since I was 11, playing "Smoke" on my bass in my mom's basement. This was a real treat for me."

Check out the interview.
Thanks to Electric Basement and Brian Coles for the information.
