Ian Gillan talks about Jon Lord and the new album

On his website Caramba, Ian Gillan has broken the silence about Jon Lord's departure and the long wait for the new Deep Purple album. He says that all the elements have to be in place for the new album, otherwise it's not going to be right.

The band has some new material which has been written with Jon, but Ian says "obviously we will be working on some more stuff with Don. What makes it on to the next record will depend on the mood of the moment."

Ian Gillan says that Jon Lord's decision to leave the band after the U.K. tour had been on the cards for quite some time.

"As Don Airey had already done the previous European tour, it was not difficult to see that the audience accepted him totally, quite right too because he played brilliantly. Also, we had an opportunity to see how we got on behind the scenes; no problem there, so everything slips into place," Gillan says.

"We all have sensitivities and so just to come out with a statement that Jon has retired and Don is the new ivory tinkler, would be, somehow, not quite DP. I think it's right to have a period of grace."

Gillan points out that Deep Purple is a family and that they have to talk things through amongst themselves before they make any public statements.

"You might like to know that Jon called a few times during the Russian tour to wish us luck just as we were going on stage."

Gillan estimates that Deep Purple will spend quite some time in the studio over the autumn and winter months and he expects the new album to be released in the spring of 2003.
Thanks to Caramba for the information.

The DPAS reports:
"Ian Paice has put his name to a signature snare drum manufactured to his own exact specifications by Pearl Drums. Launched in March, the snare comes with a number of unique design features, giving Paice exactly the sound he wanted. Priced around £230, each snare is numbered, with an autograph plaque on the side."

Thanks to the DPAS for the information.

Ian Paice - Not for the Pro's

As we have reported before, a new DVD (PAL & NTSC) with Ian Paice will soon be released. It will include...

1. Abbey Road Studio Jam featuring 'Paicesetter' & 'Dustbins' (5.1 DD&DTS + 2.0 PCM Stereo).

2. Tutorial & factory presentation - A 50 minute Ian Paice documentary, with Ian personally taking you through the manufacturer of his kit around the world and a fist full of drumming tips that would save prospective drummers "plenty of angst!".

3. Drum clinic and interview

4. "Roadieview" live tracks - With a camera mounted only a few centimetres from the kit, the viewer gets the classic "roadie eye view" of Ian at full charge on DP's latest USA tour 2002.

5. Ian Paice Videology - A collection of Ian Paice live and promo clips featuring his work over the years with Deep Purple, Whitesnake, Gary Moore and Sir Paul McCartney.
Thanks to the Purple Heart for the information.

Burn remastered

The DPAS reports:
"It was always likely that the critical and commercial success of the EMI remastered Deep Purple albums would continue with the three remaining studio albums. EMI have asked Roger Glover if he will oversee the work. Roger is now reconsidering the situation and has had discussions with Lord and Paice to see how they feel about it." DPAS also report that all masters for Burn have been tracked down and will be checked later this year. A release of  Burn (remastered) will not happen before 2003. The tapes for the other albums (Stormbringer and Come Taste The Band) are still missing.
Thanks to the DPAS for the information.

New Deep Purple book

Publishing house Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf Verlag reports:
"Out of the archive of Didi Zills from thousands of photographs the best 500 pics will be published now in this extensive illustrated book, completed with personal memories of the photographer from many meetings and also private journeys with the musicians." The work will have a size of 400 pages which makes the price of about 70,00 EUR understandable. It's planned to be released July 2002.

The book will be an illustrated book with only very few texts, therefore it hasn't been decided yet if it will be translated. But it will be available all over the US in bookstores and most probably in the UK, too. Everybody else: go and buy it online via AMAZON.whereeveryouare - at best via the link from THS frontpage.
Thanks to Schwarzkopf & Schwarzkopf for the information.

April fools Pollstar
In an attempt to serve the latest news for their readers, Pollstar has gone and pinched The Highway Star's April Fools story about Steve Morse singing lead vocals with Ian Gillan on the upcoming US tour. While we're very flattered that Pollstar seems to trust The Highway Star so much, we would like to advise them to always check the date before believing what they read.

Pollstar wrote:
"As for Deep Purple, they've been busy shuffling band members around as usual. Keyboardist Jon Lord retired in March to focus on his side projects. Don Airey is his new replacement. Guitarist Steve Morse has signed on to handle lead vocals with Ian Gillian [sic] for this upcoming tour. 'A lot of fans back home (America) know me as a solo artist. Even though I've never sung lead before, I'm sure it can't be that hard,' said Morse, who also confessed he has always secretly wanted to sing lead before."

For more information on how to obtain this CD, send a email to UNHCR or visit the webpage.

March 22
Jon Lord has retired from Deep Purple

The DPAS reports:
"Don Airey is confirmed as Deep Purple's new keyboard player, and has already started work - playing the Russian tour. He will be doing all of the band's shows from now on, but might sit out the rescheduled UK shows. Jon Lord has officially retired from the group in order to spend time on a number of other recording projects which Purple's touring schedule wouldn't permit. He has however offered to contribute to the new studio album which will be recorded in August." "Jon Lord wants and hopes to play the ten UK shows which will be his final Deep Purple."
Thanks to the DPAS for the information.

March 19
Steve Morse in Guitar Player

Thanks to David Weickel for the information.

March 15
Roger Glover speaks out

The Russian Deep Purple Pages reports:
"I should inform you that Jon has told us he plans to retire from active participation in Deep Purple. We wish him the best. The moment cannot pass without a personal comment. It is sad that Jon has come to this difficult decision but every one of us respects his right to determine his own life. I have learned so much from him that I could not possibly do him justice by attempting to quantify it. Don Airey will be our keyboard player from now on and we welcome him to the band. - Roger Glover"
See the new promophoto of the new lineup (thanks to Thames Talent).
Thanks to the Russian Deep Purple Pages and Andrey Gusenkov for the information.

March 14

Deep Purple on BBC1

Thanks to Tom Dixon for the information.

March 1
A new release from the Bootlegs Series 1968-1975

The DPAS reports:
"The second mail-order title from Sonic Zoom will now be a single CD of the band's complete support set from The Forum, Inglewood, Los Angeles, California, in Oct.1968, which is due mid-March. The set lasts just under an hour and despite being over thirty years old, it's still an exciting experience - especially as so little evidence of Mk 1's live act remains. The sound is very good considering the age and the Sony half inch video source. You soon get used to the ambience, and the label has done the usual cleaning and restoration work. [1] Hush, [2] Kentucky Woman, [3] Mandrake Root, [4] Help, [5] Wring That Neck, [6] River Deep Mountain High, [7] Hey Joe."
Thanks to the DPAS for the information.

March 1
The Last Rebel

The DPAS reports:
"Purple Records are issuing THE LAST REBEL soundtrack later this year (April / May 2002). The music score was composed by Jon Lord and Tony Ashton and recorded by Jon and the rest of Ashton Gardner & Dyke in late 1970 at De Lane Lea. The Soundtrack album was issued in 1971 and is now a hard to find item, valued by both soundtrack collectors, as well as Deep Purple and Tony Ashton fans. The CD has been digitally mastered from the album master tapes. A number of bonus tracks and alternate versions are also being included."
Thanks to the DPAS for the information.
