Giving up the role of pretender
Another preview track from the upcoming tribute album Ride The Rainbow. It is an acoustic rendition of I Surrender by Candice Night with Marcus Nand on guitar.
[Update 2026-07-08]: A somewhat bare-bones video for this track has been posted by the record company, complete with the views of (our guess) Long island shoreline mixed with some Spanish castle magic and romantic sunset stock footage.

I like it. So much (and more so than Joe‘s take in the ‘original’) that I‘m prepared to forgive Russ Ballard that god-awful rhyme of “tender” with “send ya” 😝. That is on par with Paul Stanley’s destruction of the English language in Come On And Love Me when he rhymes “nearer/nearuh” with “mirror/meeruh”. 😂

I like this version. Giving me a different point of view which is personally what I wanted from a cover version of a famous song, and Candice soft, soothing voice takes me to a different place. If you expect a cover to sound close to original, then this is not for you
And the slow, innocent, melancholic vibe of this version quickly reminds me of Black Sabbath “Iron Man” clever cover by Swedish band, The Cardigans (again, this is extremely nothing like the original, you’ve been warned)

Wasn’t the Rainbow ‘original’ recorded with Graham Bonnet first and then his vocals were wiped and replaced with Joe Lynn Turner’s while Graham’s backing vocals were retained so in effect you hear them both? I remember an interview with Joe where he said that he wasn’t too happy about the key chosen for Graham’s voice finding it a little too high for himself, but he had to make do.
I’d really like to hear the Bonnet take if that still exists. As regards a comparison beetween the two Ballard tunes, I have a preference for SYBG, that was both dumber (but in a good way) and more immediate. I Surrender is the more crafted composition me thinks.
Coming back to my initial comment, why should Candice retire from making music just because her much older hubby has to? Clearing her closet of all the Renaissance Fair garb would be a first step. I’d like to see he do a gig in jeans with an acoustic guitar or a piano. Edith always says that Candice’s voice is extremely recognizable.

June 10th, 2026 at 09:28I’m in two minds with this. The acoustic chilly vibey with “me chico Mexico” flavor has a bit of charm, and Candice’s mature voice is good in it.
But… (***), I love this song in original so much – and NOTHING of it’s basic melodic swipe is retained here (the guitar sound is godly!). Not to mention the claw it used to have live. It was one of those typical Blackmore’s “temperature check” tracks in the course of the Rainbow show. If it was a blast, with a wild solo at the end – you knew you were in for a truly memorable show. If it was pedestrian, go-through-the-motions and cut short… Schade, viellicht macht er das besser naechster Zeit 😉 (editiorial: Uwe, teach me to apply the italic and bold into THS comments, please!)
Classic example here, Boston 1981. It spawned one of the most ferrocious Ritchie’s outings in his rocket solos history. He’s kind of slouching in a search for a phrase at the start, but when he get’s the gear singing and dancing at 3:59 – then he’s immediately into a Strato(caster)sphere. The phrase announcing the end of improvisation on the high note – it’s like Big Bang itself. Masterclass on how to get the part rolling and lifting off into the far-out space. Gotta love it!

BTW, I could never understand how it’s possible that “I Surrender” is NOT included in San Antonio video, from Aug. 18th, 1982. The show was crackers and fireworks all the way through, I wish we could see ‘n’ hear how it sounded on that particular killer of a gig night. I’m pretty sure it was done in all the sets with JLT, all the way through his 1981-84 period, never found a clue why it was cut out of this release. Does Uwe Hornung Purple Universe Encyclopedia chief editor know, maybe? 😀 .

PS: Maybe it was the range issue that let Joe push for I Surrender’s deletion from the set? He also didn’t like to sing SYBG for the same reason. Joe is a remarkable singer with an excellent range, but he doesn’t have Bonnet’s falsetto turbo (which is more in Halford overdrive territory, but not as shriekish). Boston 1981 shows Rainbow in fine form, but when Joe sings I Surrender he’s cutting corners at pretty much the end of every lyric sentence. Skillfully so, but still cutting corners.
That doesn’t make Joe the weaker singer, I think that he is in fact the more versatile one with more vocal colorings; Graham is a bit of an on/off one-trick-pony, but my god what a stallion of a pony he was! With balls that bumped the prairie with thuds of thunder!

Bon Jovi specializes in hard textures, and in fact he no longer has a voice either!
She used to sing like a little girl, but she gained a nice womanly timbre over the decades. One may like Candice’s vocals or not, but she paces herself well, never attempts anything her voice is not fit to do and hardly ever sings a bum note live. A bit of a reincarnation of RJD in that way.
Only taller and with better hair.

As a singer, Candice is surprisingly accurate. What she can‘t do is put any sort of grit in her voice or give it a bluesy tinge (she’s not really rhythmic in her singing either) – and to her credit she doesn‘t even attempt it. Almost no melismas either or kicking in the notorious “whistle register” with which Mariah Carey has influenced generations of singing girls. Candice sings as if Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey and Alanis Morissette simply never even existed. Very pure in a way.
And she stays in her mezzo-soprano range which is pretty much a man’s tenor range. But while a man struggles keeping that range as he ages, a mezzo-soprano can basically preserve it endlessly. That is why Candice’s singing, while far from simplistic, sounds so effortless. Time just adds a richer timbre to it.

However they had released another new album by then, so something has to give. I never took to Bob Rondinelli’s drumming with Rainbow, ok on the studio albums but live in concert, not my cup of tea. He was better with Sabbath on the 1994 era album and tour. In regard to the lead vocalist having to sing what a previous vocalist did or even what they did sing themselves on a studio recording. Yes indeed, how to ruin your voice attempting that, especially night after night on tour. How many singers have we heard struggle with having to attempt that on a tour. Cheers.

That was sometime in the very late 80s and the picture is from around that time too or at least not much later, Candice was still in her late teens or early 20s. Depending on your view that documented that (i) he was too chicken to ask himself, (ii) wanted to gentlemanly give Candice the chance to say no in a less uncomfortable way for her.
Any which way, it worked out well, didn’t it? Ritchie is a difficult man to please and his default mode is not happiness or even contentment, yet Candice has been the major and most constant source for both in his life. All power to them as a couple.

I just listened to Rainbow’s Carfiff 1983 boot and Chuck’s playing is really good, as in a Metal-Porcaro way, very professional. On the other hand, the girls singing the “Stargazer” string riff sound hilarious!

76-year-old Jonathan Cain is not considered one of the keyboard kings, but he is one of the piano kings who never overflowed in the groups where he played, Journey, Bad English, The Babys.
I love his constant, fundamental and non-invasive presence in Journey’s arrangements.

I really liked Journey, I think they were the musically most advanced of all AOR bands save for Toto (but those guys were session cracks). And though I liked Gregg Rolie’s organ work in Santana and Journey too, Cain of course became key to the band’s later über-melodic sound.
And that piano solo you linked is real nice.
