Acts to watch out
Couple of items found in the mail to our slightly neglected trainspotting department.
Another Netflix series made use of a Purple track. This time it’s Smoke incorporated into the trailer of The Waterfront, premiered in June:
Speaking of, the Stranger Things superhuman Child in Time mashup was released as a single on Spotify and YouTube:
Meanwhile in Britain, Deep Purple’s alter ego got mentioned in satirical magazine Private Eye:
Thanks to Benjamin Martin-Cocher, Tobias Janaschke, and David Black for the heads-up.
For the purpose of being the atmospheric soundtrack of a Spielberg’esque NETFLIX series (I have begun watching it, it’s entertaining, but really very much aimed at a young adult audience) bathing in 80s nostalgia, coming-of-age small town Americana, high school movie sitcom, sci-fi + body horror/creature flick esthetics, that beefed up version of Child in Time is extremely well done though it cleverly cites/embeds only minuscule parts of the original song (i.e. initial verse rhythm, haunting melody, intensifying Spanish bullfight/bolero rhythm, Gillan screams, Ian‘s anguished “I wanna hear you sing” as the only lyric plus snippets of Jon’s and Ritchie’s Gorgan work towards the end).
August 2nd, 2025 at 15:04Purple has made a lot of brilliant songs!
Still I’m always surprised when I talk with younger people about Purple, because maybe only 50% know about “Smoke on the Water”!
(They usually know the song when I start humming the riff, or maybe they just claim to know it to make me stop…😉)
But when I mention “Child in Time”, 90% have a look on their face like they’re thinking: “you’re ancient”!
And yes, maybe we are, those of us who love and cherish Purple’s legacy.
So, no matter what kind of series, or film (well almost no matter… of course I have some genres I really don’t think fit Purple’s music) I really like that new series and films are using these old songs.
Because, to be completely honest, not a lot of the music of today can be placed in the same league as Ian and Purple.
The other day I had a father and his son in my clinic. The son knew about me, and told his dad: “and she likes real rock”! 😄
The dad then asked me what kind of music I preferred, and I wouldn’t be human if I didn’t took advantage of such an opportunity to bang the drums for Purple.
Well the dad knew a few songs, but was politely indifferent.
The son however, (23 yo) wanted me to send him the names of different tunes that would help him appreciate Purple!
I send him a playlist of mine from YT. And immediately he liked ‘Anya’!
So maybe there still is hope for the younger ones!
I know from THS that some younger people love and appreciate this quality of music, and I’m thrilled!
I don’t like to trash other genres. I really don’t (so here you can guess how bad EP makes me feel, since I need to tone him down every chance I get 😆) but rap, gangsta-rap, cruel heavy-bands, and in the other end of the spectrum – over-sentimental songs (in Denmark we have several artists who should have been born muffled! Sorry, have to say this!😂) makes my skin crawl!
But Purple, Whitesnake, Dan Baird, the older bands, (and well also UH, according to you good folks in here ☺️) well they possess a quality that can’t be obtained overnight thanks to a clever producer!
They have learned their sound the hard way, and I am immensely grateful for their hard work!
I haven’t seen this serie, “the Waterfront”, and I really don’t think I have the time for it right now. (In my home René prefers ‘GoldRush’ so that’s mainly what I see at the tv… luckily I can hear all the music I want in my headphones 🥰) but I am really fond of the fact that Purple’s music is being presented for the younger generations 😍
Have a nice Sunday! And my wish for you all is that your cups may be filled with yummy coffee, that the sun may shine on you, that you will have some time to meditate over the marvels that life is, and….. well, no more, think I’m finally done 😄
August 3rd, 2025 at 07:47All adore and adulate Karin, High Priestess of the Temple of Purple and bringer of light to 23-year-olds! (It goes without saying that cougars can always teach you something …)
There was a time all the way to the end of perhaps the 70s where CIT was, at least in Germany, seen as the more typical and iconic DP song than SOTW. But over time, it fell back because there was never a workable single version of it (hampering airplay, CIT is simply too long for most radio formats and Ritchie’s endless solo over a harmonically static shuffle just too wild/hefty) and also because it is not the type of song any half-talented cover band can still churn out as a set closer. That even Purple stopped playing it and relegated it to its musical permanent storage warehouse like the final scene of Raiders Of The Lost Ark
https://youtu.be/TASlXWbMZyU
didn’t help matters either. As such I’m happy that the NETFLIX soundtrack scavengers have resurrected it and perhaps may even trigger someone in DP to reconsider his own position though the individual in question has a history of being stubborn.
Let’s not forget how the first two Guardians Of The Galaxy single-handedly resurrected these two goodies here from public memory erasure and turned them into streaming hits again:
https://youtu.be/4MpPGb_apD8
https://youtu.be/mTqTE7aNjZQ
We can only hope. I even volunteer to sit behind the stage and trigger the canned vocal high parts where needed.
August 3rd, 2025 at 15:58“But Purple, Whitesnake, Dan Baird … they possess a quality …”
Sigh, I always knew how my good Catholic upbringing would be good for something one day, that I had a greater purpose in life and be it the illumination of those heathenish Nordic savages and their tribeswomen …
LUKE 15:
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
15 Now the tax collectors, homeopaths and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.”
3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

I hope sincerely that when you make those wonderful Fulskager, that your stove will break down and catch fire, that your casseroles will rust, and that those delicious Fulskager will burn your stomach – MUAHAHAHA 🤣
No, I am not that kind of person! I hope everything good will come your way! Because that is the kind of person I am 😇😄

Uwe, I’ve been wondering: what has the, btw very nice, song with Whitesnake
‘long way from home’ to do with anything in your post???
I do believe that you believe you’re a good catholic boy, but hey come on! Not even with the most stretch of anyone’s imagination can the Whitesnake song seem to be remotely connected with Luke chap 15…
August 5th, 2025 at 09:36Karin, my sincere apologies, I looked long and hard for a Whitesnake song containing something about, say, Sheep a
An’ Luv’ but apparently nothing of the kind exists though rumors of an Australia-only release called Don’t Shag My Sheep Again persist, which was however soon withdrawn due to the risqué nature of its wooly lyrics.
So in the end I just stuck Long Way From Home to the end of my comment because (i) I thought its overt melodicism bordering on camp might appeal to female ears (I was proven right), (ii) it does play with the topic of someone having distanced him- or herself from her original position, similarities with living people being of purely coincidental nature, of course !
Let’s end this comment with another song from the initial Whitesnake you might like:
https://youtu.be/nHZ55vMvfg8
It features impeccable and technically amazing bass playing by Neil Murray too – in a quality and style that I dare say no other bassist in the Purple Universe could have come up with or even emulated. Fucking unbelievable, Neil showed himself as a triplet groove monster here.
August 5th, 2025 at 14:39I did watch this series but managed to miss the Smoke part.. It was kind of ok.
August 5th, 2025 at 17:09@ 11- Karin’s favourite band Pink Floyd have a song called Sheep on their Animals album, 1977. A George Orwell inspired album in a certain way, loosely speaking and lyrically that is. Most of us are aware of the ‘sheep’ that follow each other in this human existence of ours, for want of a better description. Uwe, I cannot believe that Australian song about buggering sheep was of a curiosity for me to prompt a search online for it. Just to clarify it was NOT because of the subject matter at all, (just in case any good people here could or would think otherwise). I couldn’t find any mention of that ‘song’. I have never heard anything about it at all in my 65 years of existence out here in no man’s land. Cheers.

August 6th, 2025 at 01:00It isn’t a New Zealand song is it Uwe, he he he. You did visit there years ago and you could have heard it on local radio. The poor ole Kiwis have often been the brunt of Australian ‘humour’ in regard to their ‘obsession’ with sheep. Apparently there are or were back then two sheep to every person. At least that is what I use to hear all those decades ago from the typical Australian male yobbo and redneck. Mind you I have heard so called humour like that directed at England or the ‘poms” back then too. It is the poor sheep that I have always worried about, the poor things being subject to that sort of innuendo. Are there sheep in Denmark? Karin would be appalled. Cheers.

“Karin, my sincere apologies,”
– ohh no need for any apologies ☺️
I was just wondering if I had missed something in the lyrics! You know not being a native speaker of the English language, misunderstandings happen a lot…
I like the other song too.
But can we please get back to linking Purple (with Ian as the singer) songs?
I like Whitesnake a lot (accidentally I wrote Westlife, but of course changed it before pressing ‘post’ 🤣 my brain must be somehow injured, because Westlife is as far from Whitesnake as the North Pole is to the South Pole…)
And here is a beautiful song from Ian and co:
https://youtu.be/idOSXleF09o?si=Zbz7oqYfVvZRYpih
Oh I would very much like if there has been a cam on the band there…
August 6th, 2025 at 05:31@ 11 – Here you go Uwe. Our very own crude songster Kevin Bloody Wilson. Not a sheep, a goat. Not for the faint hearted listener. The second link below is for a 1994 gig review and a sheep shagging good time, sort of. Third link is for a live song, as funny as it can get for this bawdy comedy songwriting, if anyone is interested in silly but clever songs about human behaviour. Don’t watch or listen if easily offended. Cheers.

“Karin’s favourite band Pink Floyd”
– 😱😱
Not, NOT my favourite band MacGregor!
I tell you my favourite bands, and I rank them in order:
Purple
Georgia Satellites
Gillan
Oasis
Whitesnake
Pet Shop Boys
Fleetwood Mac
Black Sabbath (well, the glorious year where Ian was their vocalist!)
DAD
BTO
ELO
Shu-Bi-Dua
And very very far down the list, actually falling out of the list is Pink Floyd.
I do however like a few numbers with them, this one is a favourite:
https://youtu.be/84Tq-eAJIk4?si=6UZyKw8_hsHXW8f
But thanks to my very sweet and nice English teacher in high school (Danish: Gymnasium) we dived into ‘The Wall’, and me being very young and very impressionable, I got a shock with that record.
I literally had nightmares months after.
Even though I’m a matured lady (oh sorry still laughing at that 😂😂) I got some nervous vibes and ticks when ever I hear the name ‘Pink Floyd’.
How ever I appreciate David G’s magnificent voice…. It’s very soft and almost caressing one’s inner ear 😄 but enjoying their music I cannot.
August 6th, 2025 at 13:42I can’t believe that my adhoc invention of “Don’t Shag My Sheep Again” (a pun on Whitesnake’s Don’t Break My Heart Again) set you off on a quest to find it, lieber Herr MacGregor! 🤣
Did you search whether “The Perfect Street Rangers” were a real football team too? 😎
August 6th, 2025 at 18:18Not to find ‘that’ song Uwe, to find a song that I knew would be out there from someone here in Australia or even NZ as I mentioned. You know enough of the vernacular to have named it accordingly, well done there. The first ‘songster’ I thought of was Kevin ‘bloody’ Wilson. It isn’t rocket science as we know. Just for the record I am NOT into this sort of entertainment, however as you could imagine I have heard enough of it in my life and let’s face it, he is known in other countries too. Where did we learn it all from? Well we all know that one. Cheers.
August 6th, 2025 at 21:41I have to admit to never ever typing ‘sheep shagging songs’ into a search engine before and hopefully will never again have to do such a thing, ha ha ha. I did pause and think to myself, ‘what the hell am I doing’. So thanks for creating that moment in my life Uwe, much appreciated. Cheers.

Herr MacGregor, if it makes you happy or your genetic disposition is such who am I to …

“fuck it, she’s a big girl”

Well I guess nowadays it’s called a ‘mature lady’, but ok I get your drift!
As long you don’t link to Bloodhound Gang…
August 8th, 2025 at 13:56@23
“As long you don’t link to Bloodhound Gang…”
Have never heard their music but can a band that released an album titled “Hooray for Boobies” be that bad?
August 9th, 2025 at 06:20@24
Now I’m not certain if you are above age Russ, but no matter if you are or not –

August 9th, 2025 at 22:05@ 22- thanks Russ for The Beat Farmers song Texas. I have never heard of them, very ‘rockabilly’ and a good rock song. Their drummer drop dead on stage at a gig in 1995. That harder rockabilly style reminds me a little of George Thorogood and the Destroyers. Probably more full on than George though. It also reminds me of some of the jamming I did with certain guitarists back in the 80’s and 90’s. Happy days indeed. Cheers.

Ohh AC/DC ‘Whole lotta Rosie’, actually one of my favourite tracks with the Australian guys!
And this:

Now what’s wrong being a ‘controlled eater’?
August 9th, 2025 at 23:42I just like the way Russ thinks. And the pictures he creates in one’s mind. They’re always vivid and visceral.

Thank you Uwe, 🙏🏼
For a moment there I was a bit afraid of my sanity….
Maybe admin in this refined establishment will inform us later, but I have from a VERY trustworthy source that 11th of September Ian will be on air telling about his very interesting life 😃
August 10th, 2025 at 16:20Unfortunately it seems it only are the English fans that will benefit, but hopefully admin in here will show us the way ☺️😄
@ 30 -ha ha ha, Uwe just where do you get some of those clips from. Some of those older movies really do take the cake don’t they. Was everyone that innocent back then? Well, I was at least. Not sure about now, especially here at THS. Maybe Karin could be a moderator here. Oh hang on, no don’t go there. We will never get anything through, he he he. Cheers.

Thanks for the links… Just what the doctor ordered after a long, hard day at work. Man, I never knew trout could be so sexy… maybe it wasn’t a trout. I don’t know, I was busy trying to peek up her skirt. 😈 😈 😈
Regarding my name; I always thought that I was named after my mom’s brother. She confided to me after my dad passed that I was named after a guy who used to live down the street from us that she had a thing for. We’re an incorrigible lot…

Glad you enjoyed the Beat Farmers link. They’re like no other band. Just found out yesterday while on my lunch break from work that after 30 years they’ve just officially re-formed… and that makes me one of these:

August 11th, 2025 at 06:07“She confided to me after my dad passed that I was named after a guy who used to live down the street from us that she had a thing for.”
I’m sure, if we all did DNA tests and tried to align them with our dads’ genes, we’d be in for some real surprises. Applies to (allegedly) own children too!
Which reminds me of that Prince Harry joke when he wore that Nazi/SuSSex uniform …
https://live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au/b0014fdcf34e964bfea40c8039105140?src
The Palace did report at the time that Harry’s dad had a stern word with him about the unsavory affair.
Not to forget Prince Charles, who was very cross with him too.
August 11th, 2025 at 16:35@ 36 – Reminds us of a few of those Blackadder quotes. “”I’m as British as Queen Victoria!”
August 13th, 2025 at 23:47“So your father’s German, you’re half German and you married a German?!”
@37
Oohh! You like Blackadder too?
Rowan Atkinson was very good as Mr Bean, but woah how he was brilliant as Blackadder!
That wit and sarcasm rolled together into glorious scenes 🤩
I often wondered why he wasn’t a part of the Monty Python universe.
August 14th, 2025 at 06:44Think they would have fitted each other perfectly.
@ 38 – The first series was written by Richard Curtis and Atkinson, while the subsequent three series were written by Curtis and Ben Elton. Most of the lines were written for the actors, however I have read that they allowed certain actor jokes into the sets at times because they were funnier than what was originally written. So many high quality comedians in that show, other than Rowan. Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Rik Mayall, Timothy McInnerny, and of course Tony Robinson. Plus plenty of other well known British actors too. I much prefer it to Python. They are only humorous at certain times for me. too many in-jokes. They are having a ball at delivering it, but to the outsider it doesn’t appear as funny. Still, a classic British institution is Monty Python. The wittier sarcastic 2nd, 3rd and fourth series has Blackadder in fine from, however there is something special about his first series character. So sleazy and stupid and goofy etc. That is where Mr Bean came from. The facial expressions and goofiness. Plus Brian Blessed as the King, ha ha ha. He is a classic in that first series. Some of those first series episodes are absurdly ridiculous but very humorous and influenced by Python no doubt. Cheers.
August 15th, 2025 at 03:50@39
Brian Blessed was great as the king and father of Blackadder and his brother.
He was also the father of Robin of Locksley in the Robin Hood movie where Kevin Costner played Robin.
August 16th, 2025 at 17:46Rowan at his peak:
https://youtu.be/Nl0HqlbX7dc
Monty Python was to me a lot more free form cerebral-anarchic than anything Atkinson did (there is a lot of hard work in his humor), that Flying Circus silliness is essentially nerdy college dorm humor (but still a national treasure as is Atkinson). I don’t think Atkinson would have worked in a collective like Monty Python either, he is a solo artist. And Mr Bean was essentially silent movie humor in the Charlie Chaplin, Ollie & Stan, Buster Keaton tradition whereas Monty Python relied heavily on the verbal sparring and witty repartees.
August 17th, 2025 at 14:42Am I too late for a contribution to the sheep-shagging song-quest? This one’s my personal favourite off the sampler “100 beautiful songs about sheep-shagging and goat-groping”. You gotta listen carefully at 3:22
