Knocking off beers in the dressing room

Craig Goldy recalls his interactions with his guitar hero Ritchie Blackmore when Giuffria was opening for Deep Purple on the Perfect Strangers tour:

Thanks to Uwe for the heads-up.

As supremely polished AOR goes, I kinda liked Giuffria …

Was at that concert in Philadelphia at the Spectrum then, met Craig and asked him what it was like and playing with his idol Ritchie and he just shock his head and said what are you kiding, LOL ! 🤣

    Uwe Hornung says:

David Glenn Eisley was a good singer, but everybody saying that he sounded like Steve Perry of Journey became the albatross around his neck.

I saw Craig Goldy once with Dio, it was the tour with that hilarious dragon prop straight out of a Geisterbahn, I think Warlock with Doro were the openers. Perhaps due to the stylistic proximity to Ritchie, I actually liked his guitar style more than Vivian Campbell’s.

@ 1… I agree with you to UWE, i liked Guiffria also thought the first album was really good, now the 2nd, Silk and Steel was a little to commercial, and to many Beetle like love songs on it (Ballads).

On the lower-mid notes, Eisley reminded me more with young Jimi Jamison of Survivor (‘the one that got away’ in the context of Deep Purple history). But on the high notes like in “Lonely in Love”, yeah there was Perry-esque there.

I put Steve Perry in the category ‘unique, difficult to replicate, along with John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, and Ozzy Osbourne. So it surprises me to hear another vocalist had some similarity with him

Craig’s tone in Call to Your Heart is delicious. The solo is simple but fits the song really well. Something Blackmore often ‘did’ in Deep Purple like in the song ‘Hold On’, ‘Mary Long’, and ‘Never Before’. And it’s an enjoyable 80’s AOR, well-written song, no wonder it becomes their biggest hit

As for Ritchie’s dark jokes he told above, Goldy was lucky to get the warnings beforehand. And the invitation from MIB to have some drink that night.

Gene Simmons told Gregg Giuffria (they had been label and management company mates on Casablanca Records back when Gregg was still in ANGEL whose first two albums were after all produced by Purple production alumni Derek Lawrence)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ptvZ2WM9OU

that the initial House of Lords (the band that followed Giuffria in all but name, featuring both him and the singer) would never go anywhere because Eisley’s voice was too close to Perry’s. That is how House of Lords switched to James Christian as their new lead vocalist.

Steve Perry was indeed a one-of-a-kind singer. Still is.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cekC9aSr37Q

As a youth he patterned his voice after Sam Cooke’s and you can hear it too:

  7. 7
    Buttocks says:

@… 6, House of Lords never made it big is because Christian’s voice could never match the range and power of Eisley’s voice, witch in my opinion was a bad choice

    Uwe Hornung says:

I’m not sure it was the greatest move either – of course, by then Nirvana was just around the corner and the meteorite for polished AOR was just about to hit.

Indeed, while Steve Perry is now clearly losing his range, his deep-soulful voice is still there. The Christmas songs he sang in recent years are beautiful, but I really love his song “No Erasin” which still show the shadows of his powerful voice and the beautiful melody he always able to deliver.

I really admire his wise decision to leave Journey’s chapter from his book of life completely. And wonderfully passing the torch to their current singer, Arnel Pineda. While he didn’t say anything, biggest part of the reason might be his deteriorating voice. Since being the lead vocal of Journey perhaps is the most difficult musical job in the world, the most difficult. Listening to Journey Live in Houston 1981, how on earth a human could do that incredible vocal from one song to another in more than one hour concert, with multiple dates over a long tour.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Perry’s voice definitely soared in Houston …

    Effortless!

We’ll forgive him that there is no such neighborhood as “South Detroit” (as championed in Don’t Stop Believin’), you’d be in Windsor, Canada, if you wanted to be “born and raised” there! 🤣 But Steve is the child of Portugese immigrants and was “born and raised” in Hanford, California, how the hell was he supposed to know how the US/Canadian border runs! 😎

For some reason I always thought he had Native American blood in him, but his parents are actually from the Azores.

    Beate Flohr says:

    @10
yes, the Azores have brought some good musicians (i.e. the parents that moved from there to the US and their children grew up in the US) – there must be something in the water… just think of Nuno Bettencourt!
He looks a little like a Native American. If he were an actor, he would easily land the right role in a western movie. But for me, it’s enough to see him play his “role” as a guitarist (and singer) in the music videos. That’s something for the eyes AND for the ears (just ask Karin…)!

  12. 12
    Uwe Hornung says:

I’ve been to the Azores! The prevalent and ubiquitous sulfur smell from the islands’ volcanic origins is nothing for sensitive noses. Even the drinking and showering water tastes and smells of it. Food prepared with that water tastes of sulfur too, but the taste is part of the Azores cuisune. 😂

The island group experienced a real economic boost during WW II because – while a part of then neutral Portugal – parts of it were leased to the Allies to combat German U-Boats from there which attacked Allied convoys and – even more importantly – as a refueling stop for American four-engine bombers on their way from US manufacturing plants to deployment in the European theater of war.

Once the war came to an end, the islands went into hibernation again, but they still have a US military presence.

Apparently, North American indigenous people were shipped to Azores plantations as slave labor.

Yes, Nuno looks like a Native-American but as far as I remember he is Portuguese-American isn’t he?😊
Well, he certainly plays the guitar as if he were born with the instrument in his hands…

Hello Karin, you choose all the links that I would have chosen (except for the first one, that I didn’t know yet) to show his wonderful skills.
A few weeks ago, I ordered a live-CD (Pornograffitti Live 25: Metal Meltdown) and it – of course – sounds much better than on YT! “Get the funk out” is one of the best pieces ever.
I have the latest Extreme album “Six”, too and like it very much. They really can play anything -hard or soft – and it sounds great.

But nothing compares to Steve’s compositions, I love every piece!

Have a nice weekend with coffee just the way you like it!

    Karin Verndal says:

    @15

Beate, you sweet woman! I’m so happy you also like Extreme 🤗❤️

Yes, Gary can sing and Nuno can play the guitar, but I say just like you (but with other names):
Gary can sing alright, but nothing like Ian!
Nuno can play alright, but nothing like Ritchie…..

Thank you, and may your weekend likewise be filled with yummy coffee and beautiful weather.
Sadly we still have very cold temperatures and I cannot get to plant flowers in my garden yet. But then I can listen to Ian Gillan Band when the nice postman brings the boxset to me!
    I might be singing this:

Ohhhh her voice is soothing 😍

@16… Karin yes Gary can sing like Sinatra, Just go listen to ” When i first kissed you” of of the great Pornograffity album. And Nuno is an incredible guitarist,https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPa5cxfa-g8&pp=ygUXd2hlbiBpIGZpcnN0IGtpc3NlZCB5b3U%3D

Sunday, I needed this “warm” music after taking a walk in the forest around our little city at about 4 degrees.

    Btw: I prefer tea

Thank you for the link Buttocks 😊

Actually Extreme is giving a concert in Sweden, not that far away from where so live, I am so tempted to go there.
But short after I’m going to experience Purple, so I better wait 😊

    Gary’s voice is beautiful!
Not Ian Gillan amazing but woah he can sing! 😃

Beate, jetzt brauche ich Riechsalz 😆
You prefer tea….? ONLY TEA ? Or will you drink a nice cup of coffee with me?

Thank you so much for the link, I will listen to it very intensely when I have a bit more time. (Denmark is playing football tonight against the Czech Republic, and all Danes believe Denmark will win! They don’t! 😄 but I have to make my excellent coffee for friends coming by to see Denmark being creamed by the Czechs…. Me? I will drink a lovely cup of coffee and snicker behind my gigantic mug 😄

We do not have spring either! Freezing temperatures last night.
Another little tune to be warming us:

It’s the Danish musician and singer Michael Falch who is singing that summer is coming – hopefully he is right! 😜
