A 2000 vintage interview with Jon Lord (with Paicey joining in towards the end) was posted by the official Youtube channel. It’s lengthy at 21 minutes, and unedited, and as so quite interesting and frank. We decided to promote it from the RSS sidelines to a post of it’s own to get it the attention it deserves.

May 7th, 2016 at 21:39Wonderful interview with Jon Lord, as always he speaks eloquently. I was never surprised when he left DP, after hearing the ordinary Abandon album, I remember thinking, how long will Jon Lord keep doing this boring rock band thing? Much bigger fish to fry for him & he did the right thing as we know! He never really needed a rock music band as Keith Emerson & Rick Wakeman didn’t either. The success of being in one at that time was crucial though for a heads up, as he says! Three incredibly talented & successful musicians in their own right! So much rock music is incredibly boring, when we open our ears to the real music that is out there! Cheers.

“Real music” – there is no such thing. As Jon would have put it: “It’s all music.” Rock music is a huge platform. I think it’s pretty obvious that Jon was a musician with two hearts beating in his chest and as we all know it was very hard for him to leave Deep Purple. But it was a relieve too.
Doing the same thing over and over again is indeed boring. I went to a very nice boogie woogie concert once and although the craftsmanship was mind-blowing and the musicians really had a ball it became boring and tiring after one hour. With technically gifted musicians it often tends to be just a one-dimensional circus act. There are A LOT musicians out there who can play but very few who can write.

@9 Tommy H, “two hearts beating in his chest”, really?, sounds a bit like Dr Who off the T.V. to me. Maybe Jon didn’t die, but simply regenerated & dematerialised in his Hammond organ Tardis!. Hmmmm, maybe not.
