http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIJLCImtF-E

Classic Deep Purple tune Highway Star is featured in the soundtrack for a new video game called Rock Band. U.S. cable channel VH1 Classic is currently running a 5 part special in promotion of the game (the special itself is called “Rock Band Countdown”). Each segment is based on the Top 10 in each category: Drummer, Bassist, Guitarist, Frontman and Rock Band. Ian Paice was given 4th place in the Drummer category, while Ritchie Blackmore was placed at number 6 in the Guitar field.

Rock Band was released in the United States on November 20 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game will be available in Canada on December 17, 2007, and in Europe in early 2008.

Glenn Hughes on Kevin DuBrow’s death

Glenn Hughes has issued the following statement regarding Kevin DuBrow’s (Quiet Riot singer) death:

We are all grieving.

Kevin and I were brothers. We spoke daily, and I mean on the phone, not e-mail.

The Kevin that I knew was a beautiful human being. He was kind, giving, nurturing. And generous. He would stay at my L.A. home when he was in town.

I never saw Kevin loaded. He respected my sobriety. He always spoke how about the change of my lifestyle, and how he also wanted to change his.

The last conversation I had with him 10 days ago was about this subject; he said he had to make some life changes. I was so happy and elated to hear this.

Gabi and I spoke to him last on Friday, November 16. He wanted to know if I could pick him up at LAX. On the 23rd, the day of a party at my house. Then there was nothing, no communication. Zero. Come Thanksgiving I knew something was strange. At the house, Kevin’s room was prepared as always, with his fave candies next to the bed. He always requests them when he stays. I thought, he’s gonna come jumping through the door any minute and demand to play the winner of the pool game between Chad Smith and myself.

As the party ended, Gabi and I spoke of his absence. She was very upset. All along, I felt something seriously wrong. Come Sunday morning, I couldn’t take it anymore and called Lark Williams, Kev’s ex-girlfriend. She was in San Francisco. I asked her if she knew a paramedic who could go over to Kev’s house and investigate. Dana, the medic, got in the house only to find my sweet brother at peace.

I am completely shellshocked. We were planning to go to Hawaii for some relaxation in the New Year.

For those of you that didn’t know him, he was a true, true friend.

l’m gonna miss our dinners at the Palm in Beverly Hills. I’m gonna miss his loud voice bellowing through my house. I’m gonna miss those oh-so-corny jokes. We all will miss him.

Sleep well, brother. Your legacy is in good hands with me.

Your loving brother, Glenn.

Rapture Of The Deep in Billboard charts

ROTD cover

According to Billboard.com (their braindead site doesn’t allow deep links) Rapture Of The Deep peaked in 2005 at #43 on the Independent Albums chart. It may look like small peanuts, but this is the first time since 1993 that the band has even registered on the Billboard charts radar.

The full listing (or whatever is available of it for open access) is as follows:

Year Title Chart Peak Position
2005 Rapture Of The Deep Top Independent Albums 43
1993 The Battle Rages On The Billboard 200 192
1990 Slaves And Masters The Billboard 200 87
1988 Nobody’s Perfect The Billboard 200 105
1987 The House Of Blue Light The Billboard 200 34
1985 Perfect Strangers The Billboard 200 17

It’s about fast desperate singing…

Here’s a little peek into what could have been going on in some heads during those jams at the Hanwell Community Centre in 1969.

Never dive alone

Gillan on air guitar

Massive update at Caramba: new Dear Friends deals with perils of diving alone (and under the influence, I might add), and a legal primer in dissenting opinions. Wordography is updated with Speed King (betcha you all wanted to know what it’s all about). And did we mention new issues of CarambaTV?

Dorset Wildlife auction

Despite the, ahem, dubious artistic merits of Ian Gillan’s drawing auctioned on eBay for the Dorset Wildlife Trust, it fetched a whopping £225. To put things in perspective, the Trust auctions in the past weeks offered a number of drawings by different celebrities from world class to “where are they now” to obscure. For most of them winning bids were in £5 to £50 range. Notable exceptions include Robin Cousins, 1980 figure skating Olympic champion, who’s drawing brought in a record £2,550, Gillan with £225, and Kim Wilde with £205.

Kudos to Big Ian and his fans. It’s all for a good cause. And our congratulations to Jutta Biene, the proud owner of a unique objet d’art.

Notes from the road

Steve Morse

Back on the road again, Steve Morse brings us an update. Different realities, $60 bottles of water, the reasons of smiling on stage and (drum roll)

We’re on our way to Austria in the plane right now. We’re supposed to be trying some of the tunes from Purpendicular, so I’m looking forward to that.

Perhaps they do listen to the fans? We are eager to hear what setlist changes (if any) are happening on this tour.
