Two Blackmore’s Night shows — Newton, NJ, on November 15, and Wilmington, DE on November 20 — have been postponed for “medical reasons”. The announcement on the Newton venue website reads:

SHOW UPDATE:
Due to a medical emergency, tonight’s show with Blackmore’s Night has been postponed. Please keep your tickets, a new date will be announced shortly. We apologize for the inconvenience and we will update all buyers with a new date as soon as possible.

[Update Nov 19]: The remaining shows in Cohoes, NY, on November 23, and Tarrytown on November 29 have been postponed until further notice as well.

Thanks to Blabbermouth for the heads-up.

The internet rumors veer between another heart attack and “doing a Glenn Hughes”: dehydration and exhaustion. Let’s keep our longbows crossed for the least worst. 😑

What it really means is that RB should retire and not tour. Same for IG. Appears only DC has enough dignity to call it quits.

@4 CN, if David really had that much lot of dignity to call it quits – he should have listened to his vocals 20 years ago and throw the towel in just right then… But he decided to take the Whitesnake sequel enterprise to the furthest far possible (and insane), having lost his power to wail and banshee long ago.

I guess though, that he’s the first though to acknowledge “hey, my health woes are by now truly enough to call it quits”. And this, as such, could, and (maybe) should be of an example to his ex-or-alternate-bandmates. I wouldn’t, however, bet even a cent upon Gillan or Blackmore looking to DC as an example on how to proceed with their woes. Crypto-poo in this case seems to be a more assured bet!

I deem a Ritchie who is still there for his two teenage kids as long as possible much preferable to a former road warrior dying in a motel or on the way to an emergency room from a venue. He can still do performances from at home like he did during the pandemic. That’s not the same as playing live before a crowd, but it’s still a form or artistic expression.

It bothers me big time that they are not saying anything – if it was just an exhaustion thing, that is what you would expect them to do to combat any rumors.

    @7

Yeah, I’m with you there Uwe. But Ritchie might be shy to reveal how bad he is feeling.
Or maybe it isn’t him at all (but I doubt that..)

Got to see their show in late April in Phoenixville PA. Was planning to go again. Last time I saw Blackmore was in 1986 and 84. His opening act was this amazing gent who played ouds and even double oud and lutes. Truly amazing work. I’ll have to research that one. I forgot his name for the moment. Been having trouble keeping an oud I bought in tune. A very interesting and memorable performance. I wish them all the best. Cheers, Mr Blackmore

    Stuart Lee, thank you 😊
I always get so thrilled every time I hear someone appreciates Ritchie!

He was indeed unmatched as a guitarist in his younger years 😊

Hope so much the very best for him and his family.

Wrong Uwe, no news means that certain people do not have a ‘need’ to release daily updates on a private matter, their health and other things in their life. Cheers.

I’m sorry, Herr MacGregor, but that is not how it works. If an Australian politician had to abort a political campaign trail “due to a medical emergency” (not for just “health reasons”), do you think his PR people would stay silent on what his current status is for something like 10 days? Ritchie is a performer, he sells tickets so that people can watch and hear him, he’s voluntarily in the public limelight. If he calls those dates off (without even replacement dates being mentioned), don’t you think that the people who have bought tickets are entitled to at least hear a reason? Can anybody from us take an unannounced sick leave of 10 days without telling our employer or the organisation we work with what’s up with us?

I’m sure Ritchie and his organisation are aware of this. If they still choose to not communicate anything (I just looked on the BN Home Page, there is no new status) to the public, then that has me worried, because it can only mean that there is something serious going on and that prospects are unclear at this moment. No one is expecting health details on his condition, but we haven’t even heard a “he’s stable and undergoing the necessary treatment”-message. That’s all I’m asking.

I wish that I could file all this under “privacy considerations” – a much more preferable option to what I’m thinking right now. Unannounced hospital stays of indefinite duration for 80-year-olds aren’t a great thing, you know.

Looking at this website, I see that Deep Purple has fifty dates scheduled. Blackers is cancelling the few shows he has booked. At the end of the day, leaving Purple and pursuing a career with The Witch of Night wasn’t such a good idea, was it, Blackers?

  15. 15
    Uwe Hornung says:

Nero, no one will mistake me as a limerent Blackmorista, but I don’t think what Purple have now is at all what he sought a the time when he tore up his work visa. He didn’t want to start another touring juggernaut with him at the undisputed helm, he wanted to get off the international touring carousel because (like Jon about seven years later) he wasn’t enjoying it anymore. That is why he scaled down operations with BN so much after Doogie-Rainbow didn’t set the world on fire.

Now he’s at a point where he even can’t do BN’s micro-touring anymore, but that is not to say that he could effectively tour with Purple on their lengthy international romps just because the accommodations and organization would offer him more luxury. He would still have to fly and visit countries outside of the Western World (which he was never a fan of even as a young man).

Gillan, Glover, Paice and Airey have apparently a physique that isn’t harmed by extensive touring, traveling seems to be their natural habitat, some people are like that, and they are obviously not afraid of one day dying in a hotel room either. But Blackmore, Lord and Morse wanted out of the touring circus after having done it for decades. Horses for courses. Some people prefer to be half-blind on stage as opposed to staying half-blind at home and withering away.

I would personally likely prefer to continue touring internationally – health allowing – because of the social network and camaraderie you have on tour, but Ritchie was never really the type to rely on that. The badger rummages on in his man cave.

With all due respect: cannot compare like that 😊

Being in Purple sadly doesn’t keep people young and healthy… but how I wish it did ☺️

ADDENDUM : Purple 55 new dates, Blackmore zero new dates.

@ 15 – Thanks for the comments Uwe, I was also thinking of a reply of some sort. There are many actors, musicians, sporting and business individuals who don’t enjoy all the argy bargy the goes on with world travel and being in the lights. Cheers

I am surprised, even somewhat taken aback at how Dr Verndal omits/withholds here important health info before a largely aging audience …

Bifideepbacteria should really be the name of the next album.

Uwe, I keep people young and healthy! Sadly Purple as a band don’t.

I have women coming here to get more youthful, because my tricks actually work.

However, beautiful music like Purple helps me to become a way better person 😍
Whenever I need to kick someone or yell at them, I simply listen to ‘Girls like that’, ‘Woman from Tokyo’ and of course this one:

The Elixir of life. Just like the Holy Grail and the pot of gold at the end of the Rainbow. If only we could find it. If anyone ever does find it, can they honestly let me know how it is, what it is, how it works etc…………..I don’t want to be mislead at all, if that is possible. Maybe Ritchie found it, Rainbow was the last rock band he was involved with………………….we must be over the rainbow, rainbow, rainbow,………….Cheers.

Youth is certainly not wasted on the young! 😄

They are the only ones with energy enough to change circumstances before they get too grim 😃 (unless someone knows someone well, like me…)
