Merchandise ideas

We all like to moan and groan about unimaginative/poorly designed merchandise that can often be found online or at the shows. Now we have a chance to do something about it.

The new online Deep Purple store will be launched in the coming weeks. The Highway Star has been asked what kind of interesting merchandising ideas would fans like to see pertaining to the classical era of the band (1968-1976)? Apart from the usual t-shirts? What would you like to see in the store? What would you buy? We are being told that the management will be happy to review all your ideas.

Let’s have a brainstorm. Leave a comment below.

    Fernando Vega says:

I would love to see a great tour jacket. I have been a fan for over 40 years and i would love to have a tour jacket of the best hard rock band of all time.

  2. 2
    Pete says:

How about replicas of the candles on the BURN cover? Years ago I bought one of Ritchie some company was making but they never made the other members.

  3. 3
    Tom says:

I remember a polo shirt being available with a small deep purple logo on it. I’d like to see that re-appear. Also, maybe a nice denim shirt with a small deep purple logo over the pocket would be nice. I’d buy both. Would prefer a newer (Morse)era logo as I want them to be considered relevant. not just classic.

  4. 4
    Konstantin Gorlov says:

CD’s, posters etc., signed by group officialy. There is a lot of signed items at ebay, and the majority of them is fake. I think DP fans should have the possibility to buy autographed production officialy and be aware that is 100% true. At concerts, or at the official online shop, or somewhere else.

  5. 5
    Rick (@LinerNotes) says:

Polo shirts with the DP logo. Something you could effectively wear to the office and look cool doing so.

Frameable artwork from album and singles covers could also be quite fun.

  6. 6
    Fernando says:

I would like to buy shirts with pictures of Tommy Bolin, Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale and cover of the disc or the tour of that album.
Many are still waiting for shows of the tour “Come Taste the Band. ” Please, for the sake of fans this time, edit these shows!!.Thanks for everything!

  7. 7
    Ernie says:

First thing that springs to my mind…a t-shirt.
Not any t-shirt, but one featuring the “In Rock” cover sleeve.
After all, that’s when they started to conquer the world.
    Cheers!

  8. 8
    Henrik says:

    About fuckin´ time.

Í want to buy anything purple, that is discretely placed on the object!

Not idioticly plastered all over the place.

5 autographs of MK2 on a shirt sleeve!

  9. 9
    Henrik says:

coffee set with Ian Paice´s drumset from MIJ. Maybe only the bass drum as a coffee mug.

  10. 10
    Bello says:

Made In Japan – instore promotional poster • 1972
The front live shot of the record in purple.
That one would be really cool inframed on the wall!

  11. 11
    Rasmus Heide says:

How about a range of stylish shirts, that can be worn without looking like a biker, a rocker or a fanboy?

  12. 12
    Ian says:

And as a further suggestion, for those of us who regularly can’t find shirts that fit, I would highly suggest the inclusion of 2XL and 3XL shirts of all varieties. You will likely sell a ton. (Pun really not intended).

  13. 13
    David Sanderson says:

I bet someone suggests ‘Machine Head’ T shirts with Ritchie on, instead of the (ahem) ‘Airbrushed’ version…..

I know you’re reading this Purple Priest.

  14. 14
    David Sanderson says:

Fernando, I’m positive there was a DP bomber jacket for the Perfect Strangers tour.

Ernie, If memory serves, there was an ‘In Rock’ T shirt avaliable on (possibly) the 2002 tour.

As for Polo shirts, Yeah, good idea but bear in mind a lot of us have middle age spread, so not too tight fitting.

  15. 15
    George Martin says:

Konstantin hit the nail on the head! Autographed Cd’s, Dvd’s and posters. Even from former Purple members. It would be cool to have an autographed Shades cd signed by Nic Simper etc. Also, as Ian above has stated shirts in sizes of 2xl and 3xl. Lets face it as we get older we get bigger. Besides shirts have a tendency to shrink in the wash.

  16. 16
    Jerry says:

What ever happend to the Come Taste the Band documentary? Was it delayed or did it not come out here in the States?

Oh yea, the Burn candles would be cool!

  17. 17
    dave_wallis says:

Reprints of old posters, mk1 calendar, mk2 calendar etc.

  18. 18

    – the made in japan 1972 concert official promotional POSTER!!!

    – the made in japan 1972 concert official DVD!!!

  20. 20
    Carlos (from Paraguay) says:

    – the made in japan 1972 concert official T-SHIRT!!!

  21. 21
    Paul Sansom says:

Got to be pole shirts mine is nearing retirement and need another!!!!

  22. 22
    David Sanderson says:

I must be bored (the football isn’t that exciting tonight) but what about ‘In Rock’ figureheads, kind of chalk effect, I would be mad enough to buy them at least.

Whatever happened to patches our mums used to sew on our denim jackets? I bet they would sell purely on retro grounds.

Personally, I would love to see a book with an in depth, concert listing, set lists and comments from those who were there, I can’t even remember how many times I’ve seen DP and would love to see a definitive concert history. In another 10 years, I’d like to see it updated!

  23. 23
Tracy Heyder (aka Zero the Hero) says:

    Pete at #2…

The Burn Candles are available on the Darker than Blue site…..for about $200.oo.

A vest with the various Album Covers across the back and front would be nice. I have one that I got as a gift from Europe that has The Battle Rages On logo across the whole front and the IN ROCK cover on the back. I got it signed by all except Ritchie on each face on the back. Steve Morse signed in his place…..

Really a nice piece and would be great to see more with more album covers….

    Cheers

  24. 24
    Stefan says:

I would like to see a cool Deep Purple-leather wallet with a metal chain attached to it in the shops. That would be awesome!
And some cool designed leather wristbands and sweatbands would be nice.
Also a very good designed hoodie with a zipper!!!

  25. 25
    David Sanderson says:

How about a remote control Ritchie Blackmore action figure, complete with permanent scowl and an optional slug moustache? It could stick fingers up at Ian Gillan, throw glasses of water around, refuse to play encores, be completely unpredictable and you could even substitute the white strat for a lute depending on the mood, come on Purple Priest, I know there must be a sense of humour in there somewhere.

  26. 26
    Mads Rud Larsen says:

A small ball with the logo or something would be fun.
I like the idea of a polo shirt.

LP’s would be nice too. Me and my parents (I’m 15) have 17 of the studio albums at CD, but they keep telling me, that I should here some of the old LP’s too.

    – Rud 🙂

  27. 27
    james jay says:

Some inside info on hard back books. Some really good personal stories. I have purchased and read some of IG and RB-but most printed in them I already knew. Autographed of course.

  28. 28
    Yvonne says:

A USB-stick with DP logo. Would love to transport my data in style!

  29. 29
    Victor says:

The polo with small DP logo (from the Perfect Strangers cover or the one at deeppurple.firebrandlive.com) is the better idea. I’d buy a whole collection of those. Just make P sizes, ok? All the cool shirts are for the large fans, wtf…

  30. 30
    jagdeep says:

    – In essence, more subtle things which can be worn casually , or at work.

    – as mentioned above, subtle , regular shirst with DP logos which can be worn outside of just going to concerts…like polo shirts etc.

    – reprint of the grey varsity T shirt DEEP PURPLE est.1968, and other such not so typical rock t shirts. I have worn mine out and need another one.

    – reprint of actual 70’s era T shirts – I just picked up one Jethro Tull did from their 1975 US tour, awesome.

    – reprint of the highway Star shirt (with band cartoon figures), that one was AWESOME and I missed my chance of buying it.

    – wallets with DP logo

    -stickers

    – DP beer mugs – Blackmores night had these really cool metal wine goblets…they are a pleasure to use

-more options by the individual members, like all vintage Gillan, Rainbow, Glover albums, TShirts etc

  31. 31
    drew says:

A live DVD and or Cd from the “Bananas” tour, with the full Machine Head performance!!!!! Please !!!

  32. 32
    John S. says:

Posters. I recently searched for Deep Purple posters to hang in may daughter’s college dorm room. There aren’t any available.

  33. 33
    Chrissy says:

One thing I don’t want to see is TYE DYED tshirts.Get some nice purple colored shirts.

  34. 34
    Nick says:

Great idea, there hasn’t been enough good merchandising of DP.

-Long sleeves, jackets and t-shirts with more subtle stuff that can be worn without looking like an ad panel!

-Some vintage t-shirt like the Stormbringer one at DPAS or the one with the Japanese Box Set, wich was awesome with the faces of MK1 guys in the front and the «powerful, exciting, progressive» words in the back.

-Nice beanies, like the Machine Head one i got a few years ago at a concert

    -Wallet, key ring, etc.

-Brings all books about Purple toghether on the same website, so we can find the one we don’t have, like the one from Didi Zill…

  35. 35
    Tommy H. says:

A black t-shirt which has the LP-cover of In Rock up front and the backside of the LP printed at the backside of the shirt.

A decent denim or polo shirt with a small logo of the current Deep Purple line-up somewhere suited to daily use is something I would really appreciate.

Another black t-shirt with solely the Deep Purple logo from the Perfect Strangers record would be really nice – perhaps with Perfect Strangers tour dates at the back.

And … a t-shirt with the new album cover on it would be the best ;-)!

  36. 36
    Monika says:

Reprints of tourposters and tourbooks. Mainly from the 70s, but also later on; after all, they show pretty much the band’s history…

  37. 37
    Ryan says:

A hoodie!! A zip up that has the Perfect Strangers logo on the front, and then on the back have the back of the PS LP with the phrase “destiny brought them together. again.” underneath the pictures!

  38. 38
    hs says:

I am, in fact, wondering. When i am on concerts in Germany, it is always the same boring stuff.

When i was in Italy in 2009, there were a lot more merchandising articles then in Germany, you could get keyrings (not only one) various lanyards, scarfs etc. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t take plastic money, and i ran out of cash, due to high beer prices.. 🙁

    Yep Beer Mugs 🙂

    Best

  39. 39
    Manolis says:

One more vote for tasteful logos/art. I’m into Tshirts and mugs.Love the Paicey drum set mug and coasters idea…..

  40. 40
    fdr says:

-Instant live recordings for each show, like so many bands do nowadays.
-A quality tour programme, like Maiden used to do in the 80’s, with tons of pictures, and in depth stories, interviews, anecdotes, articles on the band, the roadies, Payne and so on.

  41. 41
    purpletemple says:

    A NEW STUDIO ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!

T shirts are always nice, more vintage look-alike, no more bykers-like logo.

Ian Paice signature drumsticks, they’re becoming hard to find in the usual stores.

    Sweat pants with logo.

  42. 42
    gatibogou says:

I agree with jagdeep about “subtle , regular shirts with DP logos which can be worn outside of just going to concerts… like polo shirts etc.”

What about mouse pads featuring the album cover sleeves (“In Rock”, Machine Head”, “Purpendicular”…) ?

I also would like to see more of the stuff sold on tour in the store. For instance, I wanted to buy the winter cap that I saw on the last french tour, but could not find it in the DP store. autographed albums would also be a good idea.

And of course… shirts, the official poster and the DVD of the Made in Japan tour.

  43. 43
    Kentish Man says:

How about a re-issue of the “Everything louder than everything else” T-shirt, in fat b**tard sizes please. Individual albums T’s plus subtle/tasteful polo’s would fly out.

    Cheers.

  44. 44
    Chris says:

I would appreciate vintage-looking clothing (in shape and colour), e.g. shirts – not these 80s/90s-fashioned things.
And: Reprints of original posters, ads, etc.

  45. 45
    ffitz says:

How about a shirt or other item with some artwork created by the band members. Roger is quite the artist. Maybe they could all contribute something to it. That would give a special meaning to it.

  46. 46
    Roberto says:

    Many ideas:
    Tour posters (of all times);
    Tour T-shirts backed with european/usa/japan tour dates;
    Tour books!

  47. 47
    Kaspar says:

Hi, I like the idea very much and I would like
    to see a leather-jacket or a jeans-jacket
and the idea with the candles is also very cool!

  48. 48
    john says:

great to see so many responses i also would like denim shirts w/ logos and jeans with art on the pockets or down the legs my daughter always says im still stuck in the seventes and i say whats wrong with that.

  49. 49
    Anders says:

Jewelry such as necklaces with the “classic” logo from the album “Made in Europe”, or the logo from “Perfect Strangers” album, as Ian Paice is wearing in some photos…

  50. 50
    Rick (@LinerNotes) says:

I concur with David Sanderson about an In rock statue. I recall seeing a giant cardboard version of it at a record swap meet about 20 years ago. It was a couple feet across and was a nearly 3D replica of the carving. I’d suggest a small, cold-cast stone resin statue version. It would sell quite well I’d imagine.

Also, fdr hit the nail on the head with instant live shows. Even if they couldn’t be delivered to you as you leave a venue like KISS does, the fact that within 24 hours you can either download or buy a CD version of a concert you were at (or couldn’t get to) would be the ultimate collectible to offer.

  51. 51
    Jose Luis says:

Action figures of the band members complete with their musical instruments and even a concert stage to place them.

  52. 52
    syed shahroll jamalulail says:

How about action figures of the group starting from MK1 to MK8 or individual action figures from 1968 to present (2011). Also if you could do all the studio album picture on a porceline tiles. I would also like to suggest a group of action figure representing Mark 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8 in accordance of years from 1968 to 2011.

  53. 53
    Jake L says:

    Hello Purple friends,

I was just thinking today, that I need a new (wrist)watch and I wondered is there any Deep Purple watch. I have just seen watches from other bands. What else, a tie?

From the years 68-76 especially, remastered California Jam – cd (if possible); California Jam – video (which have same videoediting as VHS version); DVD from the 60’s and 80’s Purple (from gigs?); is there remastered concerto for group and orchestra (69) – cd (with the early version of Child in time, if recorded)?

  54. 54
    Gillanfan says:

I would like to buy replicas of old tour books from golden era 1968-1976

I would buy all of them

  55. 55
    Jake L says:

Hello again, one day Purple festival (recorded and filmed?), where MK I – III and finally VII comes together to play few songs from their era. You keep on moving is played for the memory of Tommy.

  56. 56
    Eddepet says:

How about a miniature stage set from the california jam, with optional exploding amps.

  57. 57
    stoffer says:

I am all about some tasteful T’s and polos, not all BLACK T’s w/skulls, flames and tour dates, something nice understated with just a small logo on the front. Glassware, some 16 oz. pints, for tea, water and beer!, or nice wine glasses for entertaining w/ the DP logo. Old (or new, lets not forget the current DP) full size concert posters suitable for framing. Someone suggested a hoodie, thats a cool idea! A Deep Purple tie-clip for when you have to wear a tie but still want to be a rocker 🙂

    KIDD PURPLE says:

A tumbler with Stormbringer logo and hats would be nice . Bring on a new album. It’s time!

  61. 61
    Purple Princess says:

    Some women’s fitted t-shirts please!

Also, t-shirts which don’t look like the image of the album cover has just been ironed on, so its a square in the middle of the shirt! For example, yout could have the ‘In Rock’ album cover with the image starting at the hem of the shirt and the t-shirt being blue in colour so that the sky in the image is blended in to the same colour of the shirt.
I would be very happy to create some designs for you!
Really liked the Deep Purple bracelet that was available during the 2003 tour!
Other items which would be of interest to me would be….
    > laptop case
    > iPhone cover
    > underwear!

But definetely some more ladies options!

  62. 62
    belgian purple says:

i agree with the tasteful t-shirts (i have about 30 of the “normal” ones), tie, shirts,…
    cheers

  63. 63
    Carl says:

Definitley a DP photobook 1973-1976 (MK III-IV). That period was a whirlwind-era on a grand scale, fast furious, luxurious, never to be seen again…larger tahn life…It’s a frustration that all rock magazines keep printing the same old pictures or stuf from the same photo sessions (even Classic Rock). The new editors don’t know what has been published or not in the past. It only takes you a quick surf to Getty Images to see what’s in the can. I am candidate to help picking pics never been published before worldwide and making it as sensational as possible.
Give me a chance to show how BIG Purple was in that era…MK III might reunite some day…

ditto on the polo shirt with a logo of size similar to the Izod or Polo type logos, i.e., professional looking apparel with a DP accent.

  66. 66
    scott says:

#23 the DPAS have not actually got around to having the burn candles in stock yet have they??!??

#22 there once was a book to come out called “day by night” which is exactly what you speak of but it has not happened 13 years on.

i want the made in japan dvd with the 1972 AND 1973 japanese tour footage as a bonus. that way they can still call it “made in japan”!

  67. 67
    purple1 says:

a motorcycle jacket with the battle rages on dp dragons on the back.that would be freaking cool.

  68. 68
    Juan says:

A Necklace with the Perfect Strangers Logotype. An Around The World Live T-Shirt. A Blue/Black Skinny with the logo.

    cheers peter

    Kasper/Denmark says:

Off course the Burn candles but also high quality LP’s. I remember seing a t-shirt featuring a marshall stack with knobs and dials and Deep Purple written on the back!
Good quality polo’s with the DP logo and basically alle the album covers as shirts too.
Maybe a wall plaquette of In Rock?

  71. 71
    Lena says:

Purple Princess got it right, clothes for the ladies please!!! Deep Purple isn’t a band just for the guys, it’s really hard to find something Purple fitting for a girl these days.
Reprints of old tourbooks would have me spending money as well.

  72. 72
    Gary says:

Hi guys….This idea may be ‘ way out there ‘, but everybody who has ever attended Deep Purple concerts LOVES momentos from them. I don’t know if this is possible, but how about..recordings of an individual show ( there must be Sound Board copies, or bootlegs that DP management can acquire )…Tour memorabilia from THAT show, which should be easy to replicate, or even original items…replica , or original concert tickets…As well as t-shirts from any era….etc…I expect at least 10% from every sale 🙂

  73. 73
    Larry R. Toering says:

How confused I must confess… what happened to the store Drew Thompson created? I didn’t have a link to it so whats going on there? I’m assuming this is for the corporate website that Ian himself says, and I quote; “has nothing to do with us.”

As for ideas, hhmmm, I’d just like to see proper official releases maintained with integrity, intersting only novelty items are fine, as mentioned, better T-shirt ideas that don’t look like they came from Taget, like Ian’s stage wear over the last few years. Also, since someone mentioned the Burn candles9which before simon got involved in I was riped off for the Ritchie one by the guy who started that) I’d like to see everything they made for the Starship get re manufactured… most importantly at this point the only one I know of, which is the “Burn” mtachbook.

  74. 74
    Carl Kottmeier says:

I would like to see any of the following:

Polo shirts with subtle Dp logo (using the Stormbringer font)
Polo shirts that are made of harder wearing fabric (some concert polo shirts are very thin and ball up/wear out in no time!)
Vintage colour and B&W posters of the band in action (in concert and recording)
A belt buckle with the Dp logo (using the Stormbringer font). Sadly, some of the DP buckles out there really suck. Here’s a Led Zep one that looks great; perhaps DP could have something similar?:

  76. 76
    rikuk says:

Yes at 72 and the idea for a cd/usb copy of a gig, it’s possible, many bands do such things already(simfylive.com seem a popular choice). Really missed the tour programme from their last UK tour in ’09, i asked at gig and was told it’s not financially viable these days, yet DP seem to tour the world non stop and with the price they charge for programmes etc i’m sure they could make that work, one programme design for the world tour, or maybe nobody bought them? Or another book in the style of ‘Deep Purple Now’ by Mick Gregory. Always liked the A5 size tour flyers and a series of album sleeves/ads/posters/flyers that size would be nice. Yes, i live in a small apartment :), or a nice collectors pack or retro posters etc.

Paying to watch DP play online. DP have cameras on stage when performing and I can sit at home enjoying the music live!

  82. 82
    David Sanderson says:

This is bizarre but a DP monopoly set, there are different versions and I think this might sell, rather than have the dog, ship, boot etc have a mike stand, guitar, bass, keyboards and drums, even the Chance and Community chest could take on a music business slant.

  83. 83
    Eddie6string says:

Every time I peruse this site I’m reassured of the good company I keep.

Liking most of the suggestions listed above!

    If it weren’t for the fact that I loath Money & all it stand for, I would get carried away with this concept very easily. However, Material objects that have a function & purpose decorated with stylish designs can be appreciated on several levels, hence I suggest the following;

1)Cut glass wine glasses with ‘Come taste the Band’ band pictures etched onto each (One band member per glass) with the sixth have DP Logo of the period + LP Title.

2)Bible (Meaning Book of Books) of all Concert/Tour programms in Chronological order.

3)Clandestine Car window shades – with small DP Logo in corner & randam lyrics from songs in large print (Only those true fans will get it!) e.g. “under your bedroom window throwing up a brick” or ” A hard man is good to find” or “Sometimes I just sit” or “The Banjo player took a Hike” or “Pulling Kids out the ground” – You get the idea!!

Now, here I risk alienating many of you, but I speak as a ‘Banjo’ player of sorts who had this idea about 20yrs ago & several people have agreed that it could make commercial sense – Produce recordings of all the DP Studio albums with ‘Drop Out’ track options so any self respecting musician can replace any member of the band & actually play their chosen instrument accompanying the guys in DP – not the Session musicians who do a fairly good job on existing CDs(Mostly for Guitarists to learn RB parts)but, actually playing along as if in Deep Purple!

Exploding California set to include cracked camera lens?

I would like MK II T Shirts with a good album cover front to them and something interesting on the back – say a tour poster and/or tour ticket/s from that era. the main item would be a good MIJ T Shirt etc (i know there is one from the Japan site but the cost is too much). another item would be reprinted tour programs from that era. i know there is not many but what there is (signed) would be great, or even make some up in the style of the era. basically anything good and not overpriced would be nice.

Or a good live poster that includes good photos of the band Mk2-8 in chronological order all on stage. Or a full size poster of the band on the Starship ala 1975

For my Deep Purple showcase or fan room I wish to have : “In Rock” miniatur replica, or miniatur instruments of all DP members, or statues of all DP members like to see examples from Keith Emerson, Ronnie Dio, Tony Iommi under http://www.toyhunters.de / knucklebonz.
