TVGuide UK announces that a Deep Purple reunion film will be shown on Sky Arts HD from 12:30 to 3:00 AM, Monday, August 10, 2026. The blurb reads:
In 1984, the classic Deep Purple line-up of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice reunited for the album Perfect Strangers and went on tour. This is the film of their concert in Melbourne, featuring performances of Highway Star, Strange Kind of Woman, Child in Time, Black Night, Speed King and Smoke on the Water.
But of course, the only show that was professionally filmed on that Australian tour was Sydney on December 12, 1984. It was released in 2013 as Perfect Strangers Live. To the best of our knowledge, only audience audio recordings exist from the Melbourne shows (there were 4 of them, on December 7th, 16th, 17th, and 18th).

Thanks for the reminder of 1984. I just dug out my tickets from those two gigs, Wed and Thursday. A walk in on the Wednesday, we had pre booked months before for the Thursday night to fit into a slight break after a Jethro Tull gig on the previous Monday. Two iconic British bands in the same week, couldn’t believe that. Sadly that Tull gig was cancelled after about 20 minutes, Ian Anderson’s voice was shot, totally. Arriving in Oz at the end of a world tour. He sounded like Donald duck, or similar. Waiting around for the Purple gig on Thur and I wasn’t about to wander around the city while DP were about to go onstage. Decided to take a chance with Wed and it was fine. I didn’t realise this night was the live DVD, I always thought it was from a Melbourne concert. Although I do have a slight memory of seeing a few cameras about and a few people with me also commented on that. I will have to admit to not really chasing it through when it was released and even since then, time gets away from us all. I will have to purchase this Sydney concert performance, it sounds really good through these clips here at the moment. Ritchie looks a little moody (what’s new), is that because he is being filmed? Anyway, they all played well, that is the main thing and nothing was smashed etc. Thanks for posting. Cheers

We have lot’s of nice places here in Oz, but like everywhere else in the world, Big-Brother is doing much more than simply watching you regretfully…Best to keep-out.
Also, I remember discussing this DVD with you years ago, & you convinced me (at least) that it was the Melbourne show that was filmed, not Sydney lol ! I remember discussing my disappointment when I transferred this show into my digital recorder so as to have a musical document & we discussed how some concerts are better watched, than listened to, since sometimes the stage-craft doesn’t transfer well into music world. ( Eye-candy betters ear-candy in this instance ).
I hope they also broadcast “Under the Gun”, as that’s the stand-out track by a long-shot imo…
