Deep Purple have started their 2026 tour in earnest on June 11 in Espoo, Finland. Both already released tracks from Splat! made a live debut.

Or maybe the Danes are too critical and the Purple lads are playing it safe, who can tell. A warm up gig or two is required before they head south and then return up north again later in the year. June 12th, 2026 at 00:37Regarding Deep Purple commencing a world tour in a certain country, we here in Australia (and perhaps also the New Zealanders) did wonder back in 1984. Apart from the obvious query, ‘how long is this going to last’, we were also asking ‘why are they starting their world tour all the way out here’? Uwe will know doubt remind every one of our existence and how important it all is to the world at large. But we Colonials, as in ex pat British, Irish and Europeans etc, were wondering if it was our intellect, charisma, suave sophistication and everything else that may have been the very reason. Or was it the total opposite, ‘these antipodeans will not know the difference, even if we mess things up and start tearing each other apart’. The mind doth boggle at times, even after 42 years. With Rush’s current tour clocking in at 2h40, and with a setlist literally bursting at the seams, DP has some work left to do. 1h35 with very little in the way of changes. In order to shake things up, I would like to see Hard Lovin Man, Into the Fire, Lazy Sod, Lazy, WABMC, Space Truckin, Smoke, Hush and Black Night go and be replaced by something else. That part of the show has stayed the same forever.

June 12th, 2026 at 06:00@5 Spot on, Daniel! summarized my thoughts well. Flocking the dead horse of “Machine Head”, essentially since 2004, when they did it in the entirety – on and on. With such a big, vast and eclectic catalogue to choose from – what an (expected) letdown. Leave “Smoke” and “Lazy” – those probably you have to, to keep the more casual audience interested. But the rest? How was it stated in that profound letter delivered to the management in late 1972, Mr Gillan? “If going on stage doesn’t cause you sweat – it isn’t rockandroll”.
Still, I’ll be honest with you all. Was I really believing that they would shake the set up with the new tour start? No. They’re too old for that. Stepping more than an inch from the dead set comfort zone is just too much, which may be typical to their age. I don’t know, I haven’t got there yet to live to tell.
Having said all that – good to see “Uncommon Man” go at last, “Anya” less so, but “Rapture” is sort of DP’s “Stargazer” to me – so that one coming back is great to see. At least one Morse era tune. Retaining “Lazy Sod” and “A Bit on the Side”, too.
New stuff is played admirably, and it’s there where the danger hound lifts up his head a bit to duly edge the proceedings. “Arrogant Boy” is played even faster than on the single, do notice that it ends at 3:00 mark spot on, so another 20 seconds accelerated out! IG understandably doesn’t make it on time to spit out all the phrases right. Tempo is too suicidal for the age of 81; Ian is barely making it on time, often slightly off-pitch – it shows that the cut-to-bleed edge of his ability bombing is so ever closer. But Jon Lord prophetized this before – IG will stop only after he drops dead on stage. For now, the drive is there and it is impressive. And “Diablo” is… ta-daaaam! extended by 3 or 4 bars to include a harp solo! Yesss! We have an extended Purple track in the live set, hosanna-heysanna-hozzana-ho! You’d never imagine they could do it!
I’ll be watching the set development from a far, we’ll see if more of SPLAT! goo is moped into the set 3rd July on. For 3-4 dates in the run – maybe. Than it will revert to this set they did in Espoo. Past experience and predictability of the ensemble almost assures this. Here’s a hoping that Royal Albert for once brings the unique repertoire experience, due to the circumstances. One last time, please!
PS. Uwe! You Deutsch closeted stingy hornet! Are you poking my nose referring here to The Ramones?!! Get ’em outta here. It’s not the way I want DP to go! I want to see them on the last continental show of the tour! 😀

June 12th, 2026 at 07:19One more thing. Alex and Geddy are 8 years juniors to the core of the DP age base – which seems still to be crucial on why their show can still be that long. Not to mention that Deep Purple never crossed the 2h 20 mark of a running show and it was only with the other keyboard player on board, long time ago.
Great gig! Gillan was in good shape. His singing was excellent. I was very pleased to hear Rapture of the Deep in the set. And so seemed to be all of the audience. Besides Arrogant Boy & Diablo, and Lazy Sod & A Bit on the Side, the others were old classics. Three songs in the encore, first of which (not known to me) was a jam-like instrumental. It was kinda jazzy and very enjoyable. Fantastic start for the encore. Altogether, very enthusiastic welcome from the audience to this (almost) sixty years old warhorse.
June 12th, 2026 at 07:39As expected, Simon is the star in Arrogant Boy, guitars are everywhere and it’s total different to previous Purple guitarist. Somehow the song is like his show. I look at that performance, better than the studio version which to me was boring.
Diablo, the power of the song to me lies on the verses sung by Gillan. A more difficult but dynamic melodies than Arrogant Boy, hopefully the man could sing it consistently over this tour.
Simon’s solo is fantastic on both. That’s what I expect from him, his OWN style, own melodies. He’s not Blackmore replacement or clone, I’ll go listen to Mark 2 records if I miss them. The talk about his guitar sounds more like Blackmore than Morse did is absolutely boring as hell to me.
And Rapture of the Deep, a surprise but makes sense if I think of it. That song was played by Gillan, Airey, and Simon before for 10 concerts or more. It’s a great musical composition too, beautifully ‘strange’ but memorable guitar-keyboard riff, stayed on the set list from 2005 up until 2012. And the occurrence nicely suit with the re-release of Rapture of the Deep remixed album. Still haven’t found the live video ..
Just wish it does not replace Bleeding Obvious (the best song of =1), but Lazy Sod perhaps too fun to remove and A Bit on the Side is a solid track to follow the demanding vocals of Highway Star.

Daniel @5. What´s the point in comparing Rush to DP ? Misters Lifeson and Lee are almost 10 years younger than our three elder statesmen in Purple! It´s just not only dancing on roses to work through 90 minute set properly. You got to have a decent amount of energy there.
And yes, I did see Rush with the late Mr. Peart couple of times, too. It´s really kind of a task of it´s own to be standing there in the audience for two and half hours. It´s simply too much. The suitable maximal length for a gig is maybe somewhere at 120 minutes, I think.
And speaking of Rush. It was maybe a very wise decision indeed to choose someone completely different as a drummer for the band after Peart. Another story is… was there any point to go on with the band without Peart? And furthermore…I saw Ms. Niles live with the late Jeff Beck. To this day I just don´t get anything of her playing. But if that works, good for them.

The, uhum, “Pacific Area” has long been two things: (i) nuclear testing ground for the West, (ii) starting off-point for world tours if bands are still a bit angsty how they might sound and need a few “rehearsal shows” before they expose themselves to the glare of “more mature markets”, —> Mark 4 with Tommy in 1975, Mk 2.2 seeing if they can still cut it together in 1984.
It’s not that these island folks are less discerning, they are just more appreciative —> glass pearls & savages.
Just continue to ask me whenever there is anything on your mind, my obliging nature …
Seriously, I’d prefer to see Purple a little rusty and still with a few hiccups in the set to them being washed out at the end of a tour. Back in 1984 I thought that the Australian dates (I had several bootlegs) had some real magic in them that was lost later on. When I saw Purple for the first time in the summer of 1985 in Mannheim, the gig wasn’t great at all, it was just ok (but you know that as a Purple fan, not all gigs are created equal). The second German gig in Nürnberg was supposedly better, but I didn’t see that at the time. (I’m not really a fan of Open Airs, the sound inevitably suffers in comparison to a good concert hall.)

I would have preferred a swap for, say Lazy or Space Trucking, and the retention of Bleeding Obvious – perhaps the best song on =1. Also the encores are becoming generational, with parents and children able to compare notes. Burn out is a real thing, and I think this part of the show requires something new and refreshing. Guinnesis notwithstanding.

On the setlist,: Metallica plays 2 shows this week, same town, consequitive days. Not a single song is repeated. That is the spirit of a rock band living it all real time with absolute confidence and attitude. Not that I am too much in for the music they play, but that is not the point here.

All this talk about DP dropping the Machine Head/Made in Japan chestnuts HS, ST, Lazy + SOTW is fan-club pie in the skies. Most people at a DP gig wouldn’t be able to tell Mk IV from the current line-up except that Tommy had better hair and a more flamboyant dress sense than Simon. The majority of people at a DP gig these days HAVE NOT BOUGHT THE MOST RECENT ALBUM NOR DO THEY INTEND TO, simple as that. DP are a business and they have to put bums on seats. Playing a sizable part of Machine Head/MiJ ensures that, it’s the economy, stupid!

It isn’t disrespectful at all to say that, some people I know thought it was heresy for me to suggest such a thing. Sadly Neil isn’t with us, a tragedy for him and his family. Geddy’s vocal is the only issue that may be of some significance, but he can get around these issues just like any other aging rock vocalists can, hopefully. Cheers

@ 3 Mac Gregor @ 14 Uwe. You are correct. Deep Purple commenced their 1984 tour downunder at Auckland’s Western Springs early December. Unruly ticketless crowds and gang members clashed with police with multiple arrests & a number of police injured. There was also tension in the band with Ritchie refusing to play SOTW, which was the last encore song, in protest at the crowds behaviour. Jon did the intro.

@ 24- Rick Beato did a recent quick (20 min) interview with Anika. When asked about influences from ‘mainstream’ rock drummers she mentions Toto with Jeff Porcaro. Her father was a drummer, so initially that is where her infatuation with drumming commenced. What do you mean you are in love with her, I said that a month or more ago????????????? I sincerely hope we don’t have a falling out over this gal Uwe. Are you now going to suddenly turn into a Rush ‘geek’ simply because of your ‘love’ for her drumming, well I hope it is for her drumming………Personally I have never heard of Anika before this much revered drum slot for this Rush ‘incursion’. Even though she was in Jeff Beck’s later band. I enjoy her take on all things percussive in a rather difficult job description with Rush. There is one aficionado on YouTube who has filmed her playing for the entire concert. Maybe he is love with her too. Fair dinkum, she has certainly entered a cauldron of sorts. What an initiation for her though and she has passed with flying colours. The band sound really good together, the three of them. June 13th, 2026 at 08:50I was never a massive Rush fan, nor I think I’ll ever be, but I admire the Canadians’ musicianship and camarderie going way beyond their business relation. I started to enjoy sections of their music relatively recently. But when I saw “Leave That Thing Alone” off the 2nd LA night – just by that they bait me to grab my arsebag, go and see them. Cheapest seat in the house is sky high priced, still I bought it. It’s the 1st time ever they would be in the country, so it’s the best option, anyway. Last time they were in Europe in 2013 – I didn’t know a thing about them, never cared. Now – I’m a listener. What counts for me – is if it feels like they are doing it right. It’s easy to tell whether the band is a business machine to milk only money and chase off retirement or a unit that enjoys playing together and belting their music out. I don’t know about DP (I’m in two minds to judge it, admitted), but from what I’ve seen on LA Rush footage – they are really on it and into it – seemingly much more so than in 2015. These 11 years off really invigorated them and as far as replacing Mr Peart wouldn’t ever seem to be possible – Annika is doing absolutely outstanding “climb the Everest gal, if you ever dare” job. The way the play, interact with each other and shake up the sets – made me wanna spend the dough, go and see them in Mach 2027. Much more so than “Mr ‘play it safe’ was afraid to fly” Deep Purple predictable “no sweat, slide by numbers” biz.

I am not expecting DP to play 2h40 all of a sudden but 2h would be nice, with some songs being rotated on a nightly basis. There’s not much incentive to catch a new tour if the setlist never changes. We know Into the Fire and Hard Lovin’ Man by now. It is true that the die hard fans only make up a very small percentage of the crowd. Meaning, the average crowd member doesn’t know Hard Lovin’ Man any better than No One Came or Ted the Mechanic for that matter. If they rotated 4-5 songs on a nightly basis, it would make the world of a difference. And axed the keyboard and guitar solos.

PS: Thorsun, I’m with you, I always respected Rush, but could not really relate to them. I think my main issue is that Geddy sang Neil’s thoughts and feelings as the sole lyricist, there was always a disconnect for me there, like Geddy reciting poems at some school event. And the Ayn Rand stuff was of course juvenile-inane. As John Rogers once so succinctly put it:

At around 80 1.5 hours is about all you can expect out of the Ian’s and Roger…
Just enjoy the ride and stop nit picking it…

With Steve there would always be some salt : an unexpected lick to break the tempo here, some harmonics there, a little funky passage elsewhere… Not to mention Ritchie and Tommy, who were not the regular rhythm players either.

All the players are spot on in all of their rhythmic duties. This may not be the traditional charm of Deep Purple, but it is, nonetheless, something to enjoy in this new incarnation of the band.

Rush is known for rarely change their setlist during a tour, except for obvious reasons. The difference is, their setlists are different from tour to tour (not from concert to concert), save for some obligatory hits like Tom Sawyer, The Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, Closer to the Heart, and 2112 (part 1,2, and 7). And what made their setlists special, they love to play their lesser-hits or deep-cuts in a particular tour, then change them in the following one.
Like on the last tour with Peart, many were surprised to see deep-cut tracks like Lakeside Park, Losing It, and Jacob’s Ladder made the set.
Time for Purple to try “Flight of the Rat” or “Smooth Dancer” live perhaps?

Let’s play the set-list topic. My takes, Ian Gillan won’t be able to tackle the demanding vocal of Speed King anymore. That song must be sung with high-pitched and fast, otherwise don’t play it.
My idea for 3rd song is “Knockin’ at your Back Door”. It’s an 80’s AOR song, would be interesting to see a Steve Lukather & Joe Satriani understudy like Simon McBride to attack the song. From what I’ve watched, I don’t think Steve Morse ever deliver the energy, aggressiveness the song requires. Out of his style.
Portable Door is boring, rather have Bleeding Obvious back or Hell to Pay to raise up the tempo.
And you don’t throw away Lazy from Purple concert, it’s a well-known song, crowd-pleaser and instrumentally a fun song to do

Deep Purple is a specific group that differs from other great bands, and in that they haven’t performed for decades, they haven’t played songs at concerts (due to various reasons, the inability of the performer to perform, different singers, or the song is quiet-ballad atmosphere) some of their greatest songs.. type…”Child In Time”, “Speed King”, “Burn”, “Soldier of Fortune”,
Mistreated”, “You Keep On Moving”, “Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming”… just some
Medley is an opportunity..to perform..and in small ways..part of some songs, say the riff from the song Burn or part of the guitar solo from Child in Time, for example.

June 14th, 2026 at 15:28Nothing they do is ever going to please everybody. If the tickets keep selling they’ll know the setlist is serving them well; if not, maybe they will re-assess their live repertoire.
Some groups change their setlist every night – the Rolling Stones for example. No wonder people used to follow them from show to show to see what they would play next. Likewise the Grateful Dead, who played without a setlist at all.
Purple have always been one of those groups like AC/DC, who generally follow a fixed setlist for an entire tour. Showcasing a few things from their latest album but otherwise playing it safe. No need to see them more than once per tour.
Probably because of having changed guitarists recently, DP are also keeping a couple of things from the record on which he debuted. Resulting in a full third or so of the concert being made up of current-lineup material, plus a Morse-era song. Which gives them a pretty good ratio of new to old, especially considering their age.
Regarding their choice of oldies, though, it is baffling that they keep WABMC in the set year after year. One of the most tepid tunes from IGs original time with the band.
Also odd that they don’t take geography into account when touring different continents. “In Rock”-era material makes sense in Europe, but “Into the Fire” and “Black Night” didn’t get much play in North America back in the day. On the other side of the Atlantic, those tunes could easily be replaced by songs that *were* popular in the region such as “Woman From Tokyo”, “Perfect Strangers”, or even “Kentucky Woman”.

Interesting reading that Chuck Burgi interview a few days ago and he says Billy Joel is the same regarding not adhering to a rigid setlist. Always changing it and throwing the band into a cauldron of sorts, each night at different times. Neil Young, Frank Zappa and a few others that Skippy @ 59 mentioned do this sort of thing and why not. Abandoning the past is another journey that some artist undertake at times. Many are not game to do that. It is fine line isn’t it, nostalgia or not, that is the question. I have Speed King replacing Into the Fire because Speed King’s vocals aren’t as demanding as you think. It’s not a strain on Gillan’s voice whereas Into the Fire is basically Gillan screaming his brains out. Besides that Speed King is a much better song than Into the Fire.
Portable Door boring? Really it’s a great rock and roll number that’s quick and doesn’t waste much time. Bleeding Obvious, although it’s a good song it’s longer and if anything that’s the one of the two that’s boring.
As far as Lazy goes. I’ve seen Deep Purple over 30 times in the last 50 years and Lazy was played at every show. Yes, it’s a great song but if I’m gonna add something I’ve got to take something away.
I didn’t make a set list to nit pick or piss anyone off. As matter of fact all I did was add Fireball, exchange Into the Fire for Speed King, exchange Lazy for another song off the new album, after all it is the Splat world tour and add Portable Door. If I really wanted to I could have made some big changes but I know that’s ridiculous. It’s kind of amazing how no one can ever just say – yeah, that’s not a bad idea.

The Pass from the Presto album and a gem that is and Bravado from Roll the Bones, another classic and both are rather moving emotional pieces in more ways than one. The Camera Eye from side two of Moving Pictures, brilliant and of course Freewill from Permanent Waves. There are more, the agony of choice eh? In regard to their setlist, there are or were only the three of them. All those decades and that makes it less ‘problematic’ in choosing the setlist I would think. A lot easier and less ‘argy bargy’ perhaps when deciding what to play. And then we think also of promotors, are they going to be interested in a ‘classic’ band not playing many or any of their really well known songs. I am referring to Deep Purple later day lineups without a few key members. Some promotors would drop an artist like the proverbial hot spud, if they had any inkling of a possible lack of interest in ticket sales because of a not as ‘popular’ setlist or lineup. Just another thought as to the set list conundrum. Anyway, back to Rush, much more the ‘in thing’ at the moment, hooray. Cheers.

I think Into the Fire is okay. They needed a heavy track, loud instruments, but also in slower tempo so it gives a lot of breathing space for our Gillan to sing.
The same cannot be said about fast, uptempo Hard Lovin’ Man. It was cool to listen to it during Mark 8 days (Montreaux 2011 and Wacken 2013 for example) , but for now it’s visible to see him struggling vocally.
Better have Strange Kind of Woman back (if the place for 3rd song is for classic 70’s Mark2). Curious to see how Simon will tackle the song using his style (he played it with Gillan and Airey in the Orchestra tour, but his guitar playing was strangely bare to minimum compared to how Steve played it)

I observed when they toured US in 2018 and 2019 with Alice Cooper and Judas Priest, they did not play “Black Night” at all.
If you check setlist.fm, in the year of 2018, SIFLS from Purpendicular was even played more than Black Night, including US.
Strangely enough, they played Bludsucker in 2018 US tours (their name ‘version’ of Bloodsucker). A heavy track that was thankfully revived by Mark 7 leading to a portion of fans thought it was a new track, so much so that they decided to re-record it.

Somehow they didn’t manage to make the key change sound elegant. It now sounds glued on. Bothered me every time, the first time I heard it I thought the band had made a mistake or Don’s keyboards were out of tune.
It’s also not one of DP’s most improvisational tunes to put it mildly.

Big Ian’s attitude towards Mk III reminds me of an estranged ex-wife refusing to meet the kids her ex-hubby now has in a new marriage several decades after the divorce, he’s just not cool about it though his status as THE voice of DP is unquestioned, David and Glenn have never clamored for his throne. It would only add laurels to him if he was more gracious with them. That doesn’t mean he has to sing Burn though if he doesn’t like the song. He probably considers the lyrics inane.

I don’t see the problem some people have with IG not singing Mk. III stuff. Had Mk. II blown up when RB left and Mk. III decided to reunite, I don’t think DC and GH had done Perfect Strangers.
Also, it might not just be IG, I would think the entire band would agree if asked. After all, it is just IP that is the common factor.

Basically, since he left DP for the first time in 1973, he’s always avoided joining a band where he would have to step in for someone else and sing his predecessors material. The one exception was Black Sabbath, and it is probably no coincidence that his joining was a consequence of alcoholic stupor – a lot of ideas sound great when you’re drunk. And he’s always said that he felt uncomfortable singing the songs Ozzy and Dio had sung. Also, Ian joining up with Tony, Geezer & Bill was initially to spawn a new band, not a new Sabbath line-up.

If Hard Lovin Man and Into the Fire are still in the setlist, it’s because Purple consider them the two most iconic songs of InRock, and for BigIan they are also easier to sing than Speed King, because HLM allows him to breathe with the loose melody, while ITF has the advantage of being short and relaxing for the whole band.

Mind you, even after three albums didn’t Dio still have to still sing a 70’s song or three in the 1991/2 era. Even uncle Rob filling in for Dio had to warble out a few classics from the 70’s and that was with O$$y following after him with a handful of 70’s classics. O$bourne’s supposed ‘retirement’ performance. I do wish Father Uwe would stop leading us ‘innocent’ males astray here. We need some sort of screening process, an app perhaps. Any ideas? We could call it ‘Saints and Sinners’ perhaps. Cheers.
