steve morse out stanting in their field transcription book cover

A new transcription book of Steve Morse composition for the SMB 2009 album Out Standing In Their Field is now available. The book covers the following tunes:

  1. Name Dropping
  2. Brink of the Edge
  3. Here and Now and Then
  4. Relentless Encroachment
  5. John Deere Letter
  6. More to the Point
  7. Time Junction
  8. Unnamed Sources
  9. Flight of the Osprey
  10. Baroque ’N Dreams

Steve says about this release:

It’s the most exact transcription of my music I’ve ever seen! Transcriber Denny Bayer and I went over every song together, and I would often edit it to have the different fingerings which showed the way I played everything. In a couple of spots where the fast runs of my solo were hard to distinguish, it made sense for me to verify what I intended to be heard! There may not be viral videos of geniuses doing transcriptions, but Denny would have to be counted as one of the best.

The book is at #4 in the Amazon’s Guitar Songbooks bestsellers list at the time of this writing.

Thank god Morse is outselling the Swift, can you imagine? She is taking over the world I fear, we are doomed, doomed I say. Cheers.

    Yo,

Congratulations Steve on the success of the book ! Great stuff !

One wonders if the likes of Taylor Swift would buy a copy ???…

And whilst it’s great to learn stuff from current masters, don’t forget that everyone has their own, personal, secret ingredients to add to their own musical soup, that makes your own identity heard.

I hope all is well at home with the family Steve, & that the up-coming festive season is a good one.

    Peace !

Next to root canal treatment, the most fulfilling pastime imaginable: learning all of Steve‘s little notes! 🤦🏻‍♂️

I think I like Taylor‘s easy guitar approach better!

Don‘t knock poor Taylor too much, while relationship stability isn’t her forte, she‘s a cultural phenomenon, industrious, retains artistic control + is her own (wo)man. And in this day and age there is lots of more brainless music around. I buy some of her stuff just to keep abreast of what she‘s doing and to hear what all the buzz is about.

This reminds me: the Purple People are finalizing their first disc with Simon McBride. Where is Simon Robinson?

    MacGregor says:

Hold me back. I suppose we should first repeat that saying ‘each to their own’. And many of her ‘likes’ if they ever heard a band like Deep Purple would probably say ‘what is that shyte, that isn’t music’ so I guess we leave the masses to worship at the ‘alter’. Artistic control? I do remember seeing a few headlines a year or two ago that she was very very angry (imagine that guys) about not having any control over a few of her albums. I don’t follow her at all so of course didn’t follow that media story any further (through fear of the internet log recording my searches, ‘he has just looked up Taylor Swift’, sorry that sounded a bit crude & the pun was unintended. Wasn’t it her first few albums. Unless she has stormed the citadel & demanded complete control back or else! Oh well I suppose back in the day we had our own deities of the female persuasion, Marylin, Marlene, Maria Callas, Twiggy etc etc. Thank God autotune didn’t exist back then. Each to their own. Cheers.

    @3…

“Root canal treatment” ???…No, it’s only persistence & patience, plus wanting to learn the tune. From what I’ve seen of Steve’s playing, he works from “fingering type 4”, which is what most people do. Because of speed & lots of changes however, interval ID becomes difficult…But this is what the book is exactly for, to get you through the tricky-bits.

@4…Who knows, but I bet “Mel Bay” may be getting a lawsuit ready lol !

@5 …Yes, well, even that horrible former POTUS Bush Snr, found something about her he’d love to take delight in, especially her ***, which he got in trouble for, since he couldn’t help himself, or keep his hands off…

    Peace !

I am somewhat bemused as to others here not laying a pun or two down. Or that they don’t get into that sort of ‘humour’ maybe. Here goes, a typical guitar joke of sorts & rather popular. ‘What happens when Taylor breaks her g string & who replaces that?. Imagine being her guitar tech. Cheers.

    Uwe Hornung says:

I’m happy to be regarded as the token Swiftie here, you angry old men are free to project your frustrations on her! ; – p

    Yes, artistic control:

    – When her old management sold the rights to her old recordings behind her back, she simply re-recorded everything again as “Taylor’s Version” – all these albums subsequently charted again.

    – It was her decision to leave the New Country format because she found it too limiting. That went against the advice of her management and former record company – she did it anyway. No one regards her as a New Country artist anymore these days.

    – She has always written her own stuff, sometimes in collaboration with others, but especially the lyrics – who relate to her base – are hers.

Always these culture wars … if you were a rocker you were not allowed to like Disco, if you were a Punk you had to dislike Heavy Metal and if you dig Deep Purple you can’t look at Taylor Swift’s oeuvre and say “Who’d have thought, there is some substance there!”. Different styles of music isn’t warring football clubs, where you have to root for one team to the exclusion of all others.

    MacGregor says:

So Taylor did storm the citadel then, good for her. All artists should have control of everything they do, but as we know it isn’t that simple & straight forward. John Fogerty waited 50 years didn’t he. Or waited isn’t the word to use, he was obstructed etc for 50 years. Something like that & I don’t read into all the legal jargon regarding artists & what they own or have lost. It is the juicy headlines that usually highlight certain issues. There certainly are some tragic stories there though. Regarding Taylor, if I could just get one of those life size cardboard cut outs of her I wouldn’t remain ‘an angry old man’ anymore. You know the one that appeared in supermarkets about 8 years ago. At least that did happen out here in Oz. Maybe they were just placed there to make us more frustrated. Cheers.

    Gregster says:

    LOL !

Success is success regardless, she “must” have something going for her…As long as she isn’t overcome by a desire to have multiple plastic-surgery operations to flatten her nose, & tablets to darken her skin, so she looks like Aretha, she should be fine !

(And the length of her fingernails will indicate how much guitar she actually plays)…

*Wouldn’t it be interesting to have Simon & the band re-record & re-release all the DP catalogue, & see how they chart ??? I think they’d do fine !

    Peace !

Immaculate taste she has too, we really should offer her honorary membership:

‘What is Taylor Swift’s favorite color?

In a serious interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Taylor said her favorite color is “Purple”.’

Lots of bands have done that … Journey, Kiss, BÖC, often as a bonus CD and/or to regain some kind of commercial participation in their back catalog. It very rarely works. For all superior studio wizardry and playing experience, you just can’t recreate the attitude your 30 to 40 years younger self had when originally recording those songs.

But yeah, as a bonus CD perhaps, a dozen or so selected (and not too obvious) tracks? It would at least be interesting to hear.

Thanks guys & very much appreciated. The fact that I didn’t have to go looking for anything myself is heartwarming indeed. Also I wasn’t aware there were so many closet Swifties here at THS. I probably should emulate Glenn Hughes at the California Jam. ‘I NEED something I NEED Something’. Ha ha ha. @ 13 -yes the botox etc leaves them looking like they have gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Kylie Minogue I saw an image (no I wasn’t searching for her) the other day & she definitely has been in the ring with Mike. Also Nicole Kidman a little while ago, terrible bloated face. Barbie anyone. Now there is a doll indeed. Cheers.

    LOL !

@17…Yes, a bonus-disc with Simon rolling through a selection of Mk-II tunes, say a tune of each Mk-II album would be a great initiation for him into the band, along with giving people who underestimate his ability a chance to settle-down, & welcome him proper.

@18…No talent required Herr Uwe, I just simply googled Taylor Swift Blow-up doll after reading about the people wanting life-sized-cardboard-cut-out figures of her…I really didn’t expect any results, but…It’s not me you have to worry about lol…In fact, this topic reminded me of FZ’s 1976 effort “Zoot Allure”, where he introduces us to “Ms.Pinky”…

Anyhow,Taylor Swift has many ASSets that work in her favour !

@21…Herr Uwe said qt.”Closet Swiftie … I’ve been called worse for less of a reason”!…

One has to ask Herr Uwe, such as ???

If it’s not too late, Happy Birthday, play the music loud, & should you drink way-more than expected, a few more the next day loses any chance of a hang-over ! Have a great day.

    Peace !
