Mühldorf louder than everything else
It was a great festival, with the Bass Monsters as an opener, Hooters, Roger Hodgeson and Status Quo, but there was after 10 seconds of Deep Purple no doubt, who was the headliner and who was the boss in the ring.
But, unfortunatly, the sound mixing was the worst I have ever seen at a Deep Purple concert (and I have been on every tour since the Abandon tour). First of all Ian Gillan was not to hear at all, then, instead of regulating the other players down, they put him up too, so it became hurtingly loud. Remember, like the band, we are not the youngest anymore too.
But, even worse for me, for example, was, that the guitar of Steve Morse was too loud for the great quality of performance, to hear all the nuances.
I will join you on the next tour, of course! But I hope, you will take care of a better mixing and you think about all of your older audience. 😉

thats because the Deep Purple-guys make no soundchecking before the beginnung of the gig. The audience have to endure at the first one or two songs are used for a Live-Sound-Checking. That is mostly the same procedure and mostly all right.

You are such a nerd. DP has to be loud, even for the older ones. I can’t believe you write this. I’ve visited over 50 Purple concerts since Perfect Strangers in front of the stage and in my opinion the sound and mixing was always very good. Last time was Dortmund a few weeks ago, superb show.

July 9th, 2009 at 01:08The sound picked up pretty good from the cam that recorded some of it, hhmmm… might depend on where the reviewer was located, but he sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. Nevertheless, it sounds okay to me from the camera location.

btw, in the 1972, after one of DP’s concerts, city police received hundreds of complaints from the residents, as they couldn’t sleep because of the noise and loudness of concert. tens of complaints were received from another city, which was 12 miles away from the one where Deep Purple held a concert. Audience was deafen for several days after the show and they couldn’t hear properly. this was the legendary concert which made Deep Purple THE LOUDEST BAND IN THE WORLD!

I agree with you… but we have absolutely NOTHING to complain about Purple’s quality when they held the loudest concert in the world.

The historical event took place at the Rainbow Theater, but the only detail was that it ‘rendered three members of the audience unconsious’ and it’s the first time I’ve heard the details you describe… hundreds of complaints from what residents 12 miles away? Thats impossible so I know you gest.

I read this particular info in the internet, on some news agency-s site. the loudest concert which DP has ever held took place in the USA, in Memorial Park.

July 14th, 2009 at 12:31As a soundman, I know that too loud and ear rash will have people running for the door. You want them to enjoy the music. Feel the lows, hear all the highes and drink in the mids. Sure it’s high intensity rock and roll, but I don’t want to feel like I was just hit upside the head with a piece of lumber.

Well, George, I asked and you supplied an answer… seems reasonable to me, but then so does Priest’s preply.
This ‘louder than everything else’ topic reminds me of Meat Loaf and John Parr. Meatloaf was on a festival bill with Purple, I don’t readily recall which, but it was probably Knebworth 85.
I guess he did not like the way the HEADLINER did business at all, and it turned out he and John Parr wrote and recorded a song together about it, the song title was “Rock and Roll Mercenaries” and Mr.Meat went to press @Kerrang and said it was written about DP, calling them poor at hosting, snobs, etc…. I wonder how he’d fair on a bill with this line up, like myself he’d probably notice the growth since a certain left. tee hee!
Ironically he also went on much later to record a track called “Everything Louder Than Everything Else” hhhmmm, it appears he and his writer Jim must have somehow collaborated on it, but ironically enough, Meatloaf must have forgotten where he picked up the phrase.(must have listened back for inspiration after growing a bit himself, growth is so visible if you focus, isn’t it?)

July 18th, 2009 at 21:19Loud and Clear is the recipe for good show. When the Loudness becomes just distorted noise, all it is then is torture. I LOVE it LOUD, but the Sound Box is supposed to juggle it to the point that it all is heard, and blends well. Some folks don’t care and only are there for the Party and the Drink. But for those who truly wish to enjoy the music, disciples are a must to monitor along with proper mix. Nothing worse than paying good money to see and hear your favorite Band play and wind up pissed because you can’t properly hear them due to the incompetence of the Sound Man…
