Screener of the auras

This mini-documentary about the death of Randy Rhoads has an amusing Blackmore hearsay appearance, with his alleged premonition of the tragedy.

Thanks to Uwe for the heads-up.

    It wasn’t Ritchie ?

All I can say is that this coked-up bastard has prematurely killed the greatest guitarist besides Ritchie Blackmore that ever lived. In my book at least, they are the greatest two, with RR just taken away from us way before we managed to witness his genius in full spectrum.

Rhoads has always felt to me like a living extension of Mick Ronson, who’s career was fizzling out by then. He had pretty similar chops, a giant, ripping sound and very much intuitive fierceness that few beyond him possessed. That, compiled with his classical harmony and scale ear and fluid skills made him a one-ever-in-history. RIP Randy, hard to get over losing you to such amount of stupidity – even after all these years.

A while ago I rated “Burn” as the finest Deep Purple moment ever; “Mr. Crowley” is there right on there – at the peak of my list, forever. I must have listened to it zillions of times – and the goosebumps are still the same, each and every fricking time. And tears at the classicaly tinged apex of the second solo. It’s in my DNA!

Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake featuring Ozzy Osbourne – the only legitimate Blizzard Of Ozz there ever was!

    Rest on easy, RR!

I’m happy I’m not alone in seeing obvious parallels between Mick Ronson and Randy Rhoads – and it’s not just the look!

@3 Yes Uwe, I see these parallels – and it’s absolutely NOT that I’m diminishing Ronno’s greatness – he was a giant too, although from 1979 he just wasn’t able to join any outfit that would use his potential to the full – as well as Bowie did in 1970-73. He was great in Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue 1975 tour, adding an immensely sharp and recognizable edge to their sound. I didn’t know for most of my life that he played there, until I saw Scorsese’s Dylan story about the tour. I immediately heard THIS guitar and was stunned to see that yes! – it’s Ronson on stage with the lot. A sweet discovery.

And Randy – despite being more a fan of Gary Moore (and Blackmore as well) – has somehow adopted much of Mick’s fierceness and “tight but loose” execution of playing (those runs with the pick down the Gibson’s neck!) BUT scaled it way up, adding the classical element and bits of shredding – that Ronno never cared to go for. They both, however, were on the same wagon when it comes to sounding rough, wild and unpredictable in places – and that’s what I soooo love about both of them. It’s something that can’t be mimicked – just like you never can effectively emulate David Gilmour or Jeff Beck. You’ll always sound like a sort of imposter with these guys – no matter how hard you would try.

Strangely enough (or not) – if I ever would be alchemising my own guitar play style and sound – it would surely draw mostly from Blackmore (approach to light and shade, improvisation skill and taking the guitar to the limits in places), Ronson, Rhoads (bold and wild sound with classical tinges, rawness, the grip) and Bolin (use of clean sound, sound effects in vein of Echoplex – to give it a spacey vibe when needed).

Still, I won’t be – since my life pushed me (without much of my consent) to being limited manually to just be able handle the keyboards (which – thank goodness to Jon Lord and Colin Towns) – I still enjoy immensely. I utilize it to some extent to write my own music, experiment with the sounds and excavate melodies from my head that do pop up every now and then. All of the guys mentioned above surely can make anyone go for it. They all are awe inspiring and it’s such a joy to just try doing it (even as an amateur) – thanks to them.
