A concurrent misfortune

There is a death in the family — Vicky Lord, Jon’s widow and Ian Paice’s sister-in-law (her and Jacky Paice were twin sisters), has passed away. A statement from the band was posted today, August 6, 2025, on Facebook:

Deep Purple are saddened to report that, after a short illness, Jon Lord’s wife, Vicky Lord, passed away at home on Tuesday, surrounded by her family. She will be missed by her family, all the members of the band, and all those who knew her.

In other sad news, the man who almost made it to the Purple family has lost his battle with cancer. Terry ‘Superlungs’ Reid was offered the lead singer job in 1969 before Ian Gillan, and turned it down. He also turned down a similar offer from the nascent Led Zeppelin.

Vale Vicky Lord. Always think of the ones left behind when a loved one departs. Together again. RIP

Vale Terry Reid. The ‘forgotten one’. A fine vocalist at the time. Percy paid a nice tribute to him. Rest easy Sir.

That’s two sad events. Kith and kin … If there is an afterlife, Vickie can find her Jon there I’m sure.

And Terry Reid was always his own man, turning Led Zep AND DP down is a real feat. Maybe he now doesn’t want to go to heaven either. 😉

***I feel reminded of Ian Hunter’s immortal lyrics in Once Bitten, Twice Shy …

You didn’t know what Rock ‘n’ Roll was
Until you met a drummer on a Greyhound bus
I got there in the nick of time
Before he got his hands across your state line

I didn’t know ya got a Rock ‘n’ Roll record
Until I saw your picture on another guy’s jacket
You told me I was the only one
And look at you now, well it’s dark as it’s dumb

I mean if you’re gonna do sexist lyrics, at least do them with some aplomb!

@7: show some respect man. The woman just died and you post tabloid stuff from fifty years ago. What’s wrong with you? Do you need attention that much?

    RIP Vicky Lord.
Sending my deepest condolences to Ian, Jacky and all her family and friends.

@9 life is a celebration and you can pick and choose what you like to remember about their involvement so I get your point that the timing might not be great but ‘Time means nothing but Time if all we have’ as once Ian Gillan sang.
    Peace ✌️

Yeah, really Uwe you need to tone it down a bit. You’re very knowledgeable, but you lately you have become irritating. You don’t always need to get the last word in. Just some friendly advice…..

Dear number of the beast, I liked Jon and Vicky as a couple very much. Found the mentioning of her passing here a bit perfunctory (in a roundup with Terry Reid along the lines of “also dead”) and tried to make it more personal.

Everybody handles deaths differently, I try to remember personal things about the deceased and not that Western “RIP” speechlessness which I personally find worn out.

That Vicky was Glenn’s girlfriend first is no dark secret, but a happy coincidence and part of her history. Of Glenn hadn’t dragged her along, she would have never met Jon and fallen in love with him. If the former romance between Glenn and Bicky had been an issue for either her or Jon (why) I don’t think that she would have had Glenn invited to the Royal Albert Hall commemoration of her late husband.

As for the tabloid comment: Frida of ABBA was a close friend of the spouses Lord and it was Vicky’s idea that Jon write a song for her (“The Sun Will Shine Again”) after Frida’s husband had passed, but you hopefully knew that already.

And posting a pic of Vicky (and Jon) with a then still Prince Charles at a charity event while she is affectionately stroking the Prince’s cheek (last I looked: not part of the royal protocol! 😂) was indeed just whimsical, I think it said something about her as a human and maybe why Jon loved her.

Now you can go back and grieve for her in solemn silence, that’s alright, and let me remember her how I want to, ok?

    @12

“and let me remember her how I want to, ok?”

I honestly can’t see any disrespect at all.
And I guess when someone has been a somewhat public figure, there are so many memories in print, and I like to remember people with a big smile 😃

The pic with Vicky and (now) King Charles is cute.

But hey, I do come from this pagan country at the north, so what do I know ☺️😉

We are so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Vicky Lord. I believe she was an extraordinary companion for the Maestro, and we remember her for giving us years of Sunflower Jam with Jon, Jacky Paice, Little Ian, and many illustrious guests.

definitely a special person, a special woman.

This kinda fits here, Vicky with her (and Jon‘s) daughter Amy (on the right, unable to deny her dad’s DNA) and Sara (on the left), Jon‘s daughter from his first marriage with Judith, collectively referred to by Jon as my girls. 😎
