Fire and passion
Vocalist and violinist Ginny Luke (of Meat Loafâs band The Neverland Express fame) has a new album out. It is called Devil at My Heels and, along with original material, features a cover of Burn.
From her interview to the Goldmine magazine:
GOLDMINE: Welcome to Goldmine. In 1974, I bought Deep Purpleâs album Burn when it came out as a 16th birthday present for my neighbor and friend Al. I was a bit reluctant. I was a big Deep Purple fan, but once again they changed their lead vocalist and bassist just like they had done transitioning from the â60s to the â70s. They had David Coverdale as the new lead vocalist and Glenn Hughes as the new bassist and vocalist. Fortunately, they still sounded like Deep Purple, with the title song âBurnâ having the power of âHighway Starâ and becoming one of my half dozen favorite songs from the group. Your new rendition captures the energy of the original version so well.
GINNY LUKE: Thank you so much. It is such a fun song to cover and having Nili Brosh join me on electric guitar was incredible with her solo. Johannes Gritschacher also came through so nicely on drums. Deep Purpleâs âBurnâ works so well to highlight the fire and passion of the electric violin. When I joined Meat Loafâs band, I dove into rock culture, being around rock musicians. I wanted my violin to sound more like an electric guitar.
GM: When Warner Bros. released âBurnâ as the single, in the U.S., they used the instrumental âCoronarias Redigâ as the flip side, but in a couple of other parts of the world, that was not the case. For example, in Japan, it was âMight Just Take Your Life,â also from the album, with a rhythm in line with âWoman from Tokyoâ and an emphasis on Jon Lordâs organ to drive the song.
GL: When I was studying keyboards in my early twenties, I found Deep Purple to be a fitting example of tasteful rock. When I was playing classical piano, around age six or seven, I also learned a few classic rock excerpts including the main music lines from âSmoke on the Water.â
The album can be ordered through the label.

Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing
It was interesting hearing the violin solo, that is why I had listen. I have a fondness in hearing violin in certain rock music. Cheers.
