For the love of the music
MetalTalk has an illustrated, but otherwise somewhat superficial review of the Deep Purple gig in Toronto on August 18, 2026.
Closing out the night were none other than Deep Purple, and they hit the stage at full force, opening their set with Highway Star. The crowd excitedly sang along.
It is hard to believe the band’s average age is 80 (minus guitarist Simon McBride), because they still deliver strong performances night after night as if it were 1976, not 2026.

Superficial gets me back into AI land
I really like this version of Spanish Archer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJLKFnggY1s&t=1s
I m not a big Malmsteenfan and several of his singers but it imho really gives the track a lot of kick in the butt.
August 29th, 2026 at 13:20You can‘t be serious, RV, that version expels all the charm of the original, the singer has no grasp of Gillan‘s great lyrics at all, the shuffle drums have no groove etc …
This is how heavy metal must sound to you if you really deep down inside hate heavy metal and consider it dumb and superficial. Aw-ful! 😂
August 30th, 2026 at 12:27I’ll make Uwe pale but this power-like version of Spanish Archer isn’t bad, that is, the song lends itself well to being covered in a heavier way, much more so than Speed King which has been covered by 2 or 3 heavy bands and is just a double bass drum machine.
the disturbing thing is that this version was generated with AI (the guitar solo is obscene by the way)
but as someone said elsewhere, the post-reunion songs are actually very suitable for being remade
August 31st, 2026 at 11:32Agree to disagree.
Lets battle on fully otherwise THS is ending.
Recently I found out a certain openmindedness I thought I lost.
Maybe it restarted after a certain neighbour, friendly and more, also showed racism and more.
Acquired tastes?
August 31st, 2026 at 14:24Always felt HOBL had great songs, POTENTIAL, minus imho Call of the wild, and Mad Dog and Black and white are questionable.
Mitzi DuPree is an odd extra. Sometimes I like it.
Way back in interviews it was said they had redone songs over and over again.Re used the tape again and again.
But everyone of us knows staying power of the integrity by what they said.
As usual several songs became much better on stage.
IMHO not enough HAMMOND, and Paicey and Blackmore without reason playing what we did not want from a reunion.
Took them a long time to go back to their 70 s strenght.
September 1st, 2026 at 11:31BTW, I didn’t mind the MetalTalk review. Nothing for trainspotters, granted, but benevolent – and isn’t a little benevolence what DP duly deserve after their years of service?
To my mind there can never be enough people who “superficially” like DP – they pay the band’s bills.
