Deep Purple, Nantes, Pruillé (France, 11th November 2012).
Even sometimes are screaming was dropped as highway star it was a very good gig.
The show was energetic and fresh.I totally agree with the post from Grenoble, for Ian Paice and Ian Gillan. The drums solo was amazing and Ian Gillan was also in a fine form as Roger,Steve and Don who has played”Dans les prisons de Nantes”.
Audience:5500.
The crow was happy and enthousiastic..
Higlighs:Hard loving man,The mule,no one came, Space trucking,Hush,Black night.
Fireball is a good opening.
Thanks to the Deep.

Highway Star should not ever have been dropped from the set list, it should always be the opening song of the show, because of how it builds up then WHAM ! it smacks you in the face with it’s awsomeness.

They’ve opened with Highway Star for 40 years. No need to do it every tour, let them play newer material and songs they haven’t played before.

No HS? So what? They’ve played it for years and years, and I prefer they would do some more odd numbers and some newer stuff instead. Black Night and Hush don’t need to be played each night either. There’s so much great stuff in the “Deep Purple fun bag”, new and old, that they can change the set list around ever night…..if they dare do it:-)

I think they feel scared of exchanging some of the oldies for , for example, things from whatever Morse album.

Deep Purple has always been “my band” but they should take a lesson from Uriah Heep. Just saw the Heepsters at BB Kings (NYC) and they played a great setlist mix of old and NEW tunes. DP has made a lot of great music since ’94 and I for one would love to hear more of it live in concert so if I had to lose a classic or two to hear more Morse Era songs I’m all for it. Yes I love Highway Star but I have heard it played live by DP several times but I have never heard greats like the Purpendicular Waltz or Any Fule Kno That ever…..

Sad that HS isn’t in the setlist anymore. It was played as an encore for the 2 or 3 first gigs of the tour. I think this is because of Gillan’s voice. I agree that a DP gig without HS is a bit strange as it is probably their best and most powerful song.

hmmm, they opened with ted the mech a few years back, why not leave it out now and then, more morse era please!

I would say about time it was dropped and more of the Machine Head album with it. They have been played to death. The 96 tour for Purpendicular was a refreshing change and since then they have rarely experimented with the set to the same degree. I would prefer songs rarely played or not at all to be in the set and why not more from the Morse era. Just my opinion before someone jumps down my throat for saying it. For example, why not have Rat Bat Blue or Place in Line, Strangeways, Anya,The Aviator etc in the set.

They should have some standard songs like HS and Smoke in the set every night. Then play stuff from the back catalog…with a heavy emphasis on the Morse era stuff. It’s not that hard.

Have to say Highway Star smacks you in the face right out of the box. I last saw DP in Atlantic City about a year ago Ernie and the Maniacs (I believe that was the Band of which had some Boston heavy hitters in the group) They played some great Boston tunes and sounded great. I was afraid they would show up my favorites. Then Highway Star began and I knew why DP was the attraction. That said…how about some very old DP like the Shield? I really dig that tune.
