Machine Head‘2024

Machine_Head_2024

Rhino/Warner are preparing to release a yet another “super deluxe” reissue of the Machine Head. It will include the album newly remixed by Dweezil Zappa, plus two live recordings — the March 9, 1972, gig at the Paris Theatre in London (a.k.a. In Concert’72), and an audience recording from Montreux Casino in April 1971.

The new remix of the album could be of particular interest, as it will be released in Dolby Atmos format on Blu-ray. Which is essentially multitracks together with metadata with instructions for the customer premises equipment on how to mix and pan them to create a 3D soundscape.

As for the Montreux recording, Deep Purple played two gigs there in April 1971: on the 16th and 17th. The gigs are remarkable for the decision made then by the band to record the next album there in December. You know the rest of the story. The April 16th gig was filmed by Swiss TV and bits and pieces of it were used in a contemporary documentary The Revolution.

In memory of Janine Morse

Steve Morse and Janine

Steve Morse writes in his website:

Yesterday, February 4, at 2:40pm, I said my last goodbye to my beloved wife, Janine. We had been in a period of remission which lasted not nearly long enough. But luckily, I was able to spend virtually every day with her as she found workarounds to get through some of the aftermath of the long chemo treatment. But we did travel and do things, and were enjoying life with both of us cherishing every moment. Deep down, we knew that any day, we could get the news.

Some of you knew her, as she would sell shirts at my trio (Steve Morse Band) gigs, and she loved to travel and meet everyone. If anybody happens to read this who got their picture with Janine and I a few weeks ago at the Kansas concert in Clearwater, you have a photo of the last show she ever went to, and I’d love to see that shot if you could post it.

Read Steve’s heartfelt eulogy to his wife in full on stevemorse.com.

We extend our most sincere condolences to Steve and his family.

Warhorse remasters

WarHorse-remasters-2cd-cover

Cherry Red Records is preparing a remasters of the two Warhorse albums — the 1970 self-titled one, and the ’72 Red Sea. Both will be packaged together on a 2CD set, with 11 bonus tracks between them and an illustrated booklet. Release date is set for April 26, 2024.

Formed in early 1970 by former Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper, the band began life as backing band for singer Marsha Hunt. The group also initially featured Rick Wakeman, but he departed the band in April 1970 to join Strawbs. Signing a licensing contract with Vertigo Records, the band’s self-titled debut album was released in November 1970. The release was followed by touring, but the band’s line-up evolved further before the recording of their second album, ‘Red Sea’, issued in June 1972.

Soon after this, drummer Mac Poole departed join Gong and was replaced by Barney James. Warhorse would continue until 1974, but vocalist Ashley Holt and Barney James would depart to join Rick Wakeman in his band The English Rock Ensemble.

The two albums recorded by Warhirse are fine examples of Progressive Hard Rock of the era. They are both featured in this collection, along with eleven further bonus tracks comprising demos and live recordings.

Before MTV and hairspray

Louder Sound reprints a Geoff Barton feature on the pre-1987 Whitesnake originally penned for the Classic Rock magazine.

It’s March 9, 1978. The ritzy stage of the Scarborough Penthouse looks like something out of The Price Is Right: curtains made out of multi-coloured strips of aluminium foil drape over a modest backline of amplifiers, there’s a mirrorball hanging from the ceiling, there’s glitter on the walls. But there’s no sense of pomp and ceremony, just a taste of stale beer and a whiff of pie and chips. There are maybe 100 people here for only the fourth ever gig by Whitesnake, fronted by the dynamic and thrusting David Coverdale. Cum on down…

To those more familiar with the modern-day, turbo-charged Whitesnake, this band from the late 70s would be unrecognisable. Coverdale takes to the boards wearing cheap T-shirt and jeans, more Millets than Moschino. He’s pale-faced and chubby-cheeked; his mane of dark brown hair is untamed, unteased, unbleached.
