Weep for that future
Our recent foray into the trainspotting territory prompted another trip down the memory lane. Better Call Saul is a prequel/offshoot of the hit TV drama series Breaking Bad, and it has run between 2015 and 2020. Somebody in the writers’ pen of the show was obviously a fan.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) is a stylish slasher/suspense flick set in the 1960s, with a period appropriate soundtrack. This was pretty obvious when the trailer came out, and the movie didn’t disappoint on this front either: Hush is featured in one of the key scenes:
Thanks to Albania and Catrin for jiggling the memory and leading the way.

Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing
Ahh, “Kevin Costner” bought a guitar and played “Smoke on the Water”
Not the same impact though with Badfinger “Baby Blue” who rose to popularity again many years after it was 1st released, after being played at the last episode of BB. With context relation to blue meth produced by Walter White and the short ‘peaceful’ feeling he enjoyed before his death.
I tried to dig the context of using SOTW. Maybe the song’s positive vibe related to the confidence, freewill, wildlife Jimmy experienced during Season 1. The song primarily used during episode where he and his crime-partner Marcho ran fake Rolex-watch scams
And it might parallel with similar scene in The Sopranos, where Tony Soprano also played Smoke on the Water in the mood while driving his car like Jimmy (although you might hate his car tape got malfunctioned and the song ended abruptly in ‘chaos’, Tony’s mood changed lol)

Can’t help noticing that in the “Bad Times…” clip the disc in the jukebox sports the correct label 🙂

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, contains a very clever use of Hush. Released in 2019, the film received largely positive reviews and includes an impressive line of Hollywood heavyweights, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pachino, Kurt Russell, and many more.
What makes the timing of Hush in the film unique is that it accompanies director Roman Polanski (Rafal Zawierucha) and his wife/young actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) on their drive to the fabled Playboy Mansion in Hollywood. Well known for his obsessive attention to detail, Tarantino is also the proud owner of a vast and eclectic record collection. It is no accident that Hush was featured in the film in such a prominent and carefully curated manner.
For those unaware, Deep Purple is featured not once, but twice in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; in addition to Hush, Deep Purple’s version of Kentucky Woman, also, makes a brief but meaningful appearance. And both songs are part of the official soundtrack album, which includes many other great songs.
Here is a YouTube link to the Hush portion of the film:

Good movie!
Too bad the 4 hour director’s cut for Netflix isn’t happening after all (a spin-off movie is planned instead)
Regarding Purp’s songs on film, I loved “Anthem” (MK1’s gorgeous ballad) on the movie “Requiem”.
Best, J.-

Karin, PLEASE, whatever you do, DO NOT click on Uwe’s link. The trauma will be more than you can bear.
May 27th, 2026 at 08:34The first two films that come to mind with Purple songs date back to my youth:
Child in Time inside the soundtrack of Twister (1996)
Strange Kind of Woman inside the soundtrack of East Is East (1999)

Finally someone who is a bit concerned about my wellbeing, however my head is wired like this: when ever I’m told there is something I’m not allowed to see, of course I’ve to see it…..
