To the four corners of the earth

Ian Gillan spoke to the Leona Graham Podcast. This sounds like it was done some time in 2025, but posted only now, in May 2026. They talked about Ian’s collaboration with Urock, his age of discovery, the hardest song he had to sing, and other things.

Thanks to Fla76 and Uwe for the heads-up.

Pleasntly surprised about Never A Word. Dusted off Bananas and gave it a spin. I’d forgotten how much I liked the track. Unique in the DP canon. First album without JL. He was critical of the song as the chord progression didn’t resolve. I think that this adds to its charm. Saw them on the last night of the Bananas world tour at the North Shore Events Centre in Auckland New Zealand. Great gig, great crowd, they even dragged Bruce Payne out onstage after the encores during the standing ovation. DP were subsequently permanently banned from the venue after local residents complained about the noise levels. Very rock n roll.

    Andre Sihotang says:

Never a Word, the most beautiful and subtle and Deep Purple song ever create. And I’m listening to it again as I am writing this comment

And what makes it special to me is, it’s difficult to imagine other Purple formation to create song like this. Just like you can’t imagine other DP marks creating song like You Keep on Moving, Space Truckin’, The Painter, or The Cut Runs Deep. These songs are unique, representing the 5 musicians in that line-up as well as reflecting the period of time they were in.

@1 Lol that’s hilarious, banning a band like Deep Purple due to their noise levels. Sure the audience that went there really had good times

    #1 AJ:
as already said elsewhere Never a Word is a gem of absolute purity, but Bananas is full of great songs, in my opinion it is the most risky and “different” album of Purple, riskier than all those that came after and even than the much celebrated Purplendicular.

If Bananas had had the same hard sound as Abandon and a few more BPMs in the more rhythmic songs, it would now be the masterpiece of the Morse era.

‘Never a Word’ is possibly my favourite underrated off the wall Purple song. For all Ian’s implied criticism all his best compositions in later years have been when Steve dragged him out of his comfort zone and specifically away from trying to complete with their seventies heyday or something that would be at home on a Gillan album. Actually reminds me a bit of Episode 6. Here’s hoping somewhere hidden in the new album tracklisting is another ‘Man Alive’, ‘Nothing at all’s, or ‘The Surprising’.

@ 3- ha ha ha, I was thinking similar Uwe. Wondering if Karin will watch these interviews and if she was wishing that she was the interviewer. We really should leave poor ole Karin alone for a little while………………………..oh hang on, why would we want to do that?? Just joking Karin. Uwe and I will attempt a little more decorum from now on, for a little while at least….if we can………Cheers.

    MacGregor says:

@ 6- you are not wrong there. Thinking outside the box and getting away from the ‘mothership’. This is where solo or collaboration albums are better in certain ways. Particularly after many years singing so many songs. Vocalists get too much the same-ish just like a guitarist does in rock music. Break it up a little, do something different. Easier said than done though and that will not pay the bills like a constantly active band will. That song Never A Word isn’t really a DP sounding song to my ears. Cheers.

    Thorsun says:

OK, Folks, how about showing some love to “Step By Step” from Whoosh? It’s also beautiful and much “outside the Purple box of content”. Based on some Chopin progressions, I believe. Swaying delightfully and, as typical of their more brave ideas, fading out all too quick.

  11. 11
    Uwe Hornung says:

Bananas was a fun record and sounded like the band felt that too. Very diverse, which is always good with Purple.

There is something in the production though, itā€˜s klirrig/clinky in a slightly irritating/unpleasant way. Has nothing to do with the music though. Popoff mentions it in his bio too. I guess that album could use a remix as well, Roger, get on with it! ā˜ļøšŸ˜Ž

I think the whole Woosh! album is a strong showing, Thorsun, I prefer it to Infinite which I thought a bit mediocre.

    Uwe Hornung says:

That song Never A Word isn’t really a DP sounding song to my ears.

Yes, but that is a good thing! Buy Ramones, AC/DC and Motƶrhead albums if you want to hear the same song rewritten over and over again.

I love diversity with bands, QUEEN were really fearless in that regard.

I much prefer a good composition breaking with a band’s convention to a mediocre same old-same old. It’s fine if a band has an immediately identifiable style and sound, but not every song in their oeuvre needs to be processed like that.

step by step is one of those (too many) songs from the Morse/Airey era that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, because it potentially could have been a great song.
the main theme is beautiful and BigIan’s vocal line is beautiful!
but the song is too flaccid, it lacks BPM, and LittleIan does nothing to enrich the song.

guitar too soft, keyboard intro and Don’s solo I don’t like the sound, and the opening theme makes me exclaim: “another keyboard intro?…when will there be a nice guitar riff?”

  18. 18
    Steve says:

Bananas was a brilliant album ( except for haunted ! WTF was that ? …and they even played it live at the worst DP gig I ever saw …Birmingham 2003 , they were supported by Skynard …and a relatively unknown band …The Darkness !! ) DP looked totally disinterested that night !
I remember the British press flagging off Bananas…yet a few years later ( when they realised they weren’t going away ) …they were all over them !
    Ps
Doesn’t Gillan look well …I wonder if he’ll still be on the stage as a centurion!?

Good interviewer as well …knows her stuff !

  19. 19
    Uwe Hornung says:

Never A Word is basically a song that would have worked well with Steve’s Angelfire collaboration with Sarah Spencer too, in fact it is a bit of a prototype for the songs on that album.

    Uwe Hornung says:

According to the Popoff bio, Haunted was written by Roger who wanted to save it for one of his solo ventures, never imagining that his Purple buddies would like it. Yet when he played it to them hesitantly, they did!

The lyrics of the verses are Gillan’s, Roger wrote the ones to the chorus, so he is the one who mis-rhymed ā€œI’m hauntedā€ with ā€œis that what you wa(u)ntedā€ – with which the in such things usually scathing and merciless English music press had a field day! 😈

Bad rhyme or not, I like the song and loved the fact that they played it live.

    https://youtu.be/UVG8lguytlk (WARNING: muscle shirt content)

The gig I saw on that tour (also with Lynyrd Skynyrd opening) was actually one of the best ones of Mk VIII I witnessed, really spirited and with an abundance of new songs which lamentably all fell by the wayside eventually.

aah Angelfire – I could listen to Steve’s (semi-)acoustic playing on the Buscarino for hours…
The track you mentioned ( Far Gone now) is originally a song called “Indian Summer” that he composed years ago.

Not to forget the wonderful “classical” duets with Dave that you could find on every SMB album. Steve always joked that these duets were “weird” when he picked up his Buscarino in the middle of a SMB live gig.
I was very disappointed that there was not such a duet on “Triangulation” and the last tour, but the duet with Kevin on the album made up for it!

Re the drum stick, I have to offer my apologies. Since we stopped invading neighboring countries on a regular basis, German logistics have lost all Blitzkrieg appeal and efficiency, the stupid post office didn’t use the right postage decal and the drum stick was unceremoniously returned to me today. I will return to the post office tomorrow and initiate the customary reprisals, i.e. (i) put up against the wall and shot, or (in less severe cases) —>Ostfront!!!

If this second attempt fails, I will bring you the drum stick myself, employing tried and trusted German transport help.

(I have to laugh at my own stereotypes. I’m reminded of an interview with Shania Twain where she was asked by the (male) music journo what her favorite guitar was and she went into this really detailed description of the pros and cons of various acoustic guitars she owned, only to halfway stop in the middle and deadpan: “You expected me to to say “the wooden one with the hole in the middle”, right?” 🤣)

    #18 Steve:

Among the post-1993 long ballads Haunted is my favorite, I think BigIan gives a great interpretation and Steve’s solo is thrilling!

Changing the subject, this evening I rewatched the DVD of Gillan’s live performance from the Naked Thunder tour.
the band was a group of ugly, dirty and bad musicians, but how good!

I did a bit of searching on the internet and discovered (with my guilty delay) that Tommy Eyre (a very good pianist) and drummer Ted McKenna have long since passed away.
McKenna was very unfortunate because he died following a complication after a banal hernia operation, poor man.
    https://offbeat.co.uk/ted-mckenna-a-tragic-loss/

Bassist Chris Glen (Sensational Alex Harvey Band & Michael Schenker) is having health problems but is still active in his hometown of Scotland.
I have not found any recent news about rhythm guitarist Michael O’Donoghue (Grand Prix).
and I also found no news about Dave Lloyd, it’s a shame that he was reduced to doing backing vocals for BigIan, after his seminal bands Nutz and Rage had little success, he was a very gifted singer:

And if the weather gets a bit better, we can sit in the garden with blooming flowers, humming bees, chirping birds and little Anton jumping around and showing all his tricks 😊

The lucky redhead could be all three persons in one, yes, but please have mercy with Ian! She looks like somewhat of a handful šŸ˜„ (redheads usually are, right? Women – I’m talking about women!)

Interesting that you like Haunted ! ..I guess we all have different taste . I was actually just splitting up with a long term girlfriend at the time so that’s probably why I couldn’t stand it …likewise, loving on borrowed time from Naked Thunder ( I don’t seem to have a lot of luck with the ladies …maybe it’s my taste in music ! Lol )

I knew about the two RIPs …but what about Steve Morris? Is he still around and active with Gillan ?

When you talk about ballads , I think the only one I really liked was ” A touch away” from Purpendicular…great song , great album

Never a Word used to be my most disliked DP song for ages, whereas I loved the rest of the album; my first own DP-CD that was. But somewhen along the line I came to really enjoy Never a Word with its beatlesque melodies. A remix of course would be interesting, Uwe. There are some sounds on that record which make it sound a little bit dated, typical early 2000s production with perhaps a little too many overdubbed sounds.

    Uwe Hornung says:

Fla76, are you aware of Dave Lloyd’s work with AOR cult favorites 2am?

I know someone – sorry I’m an old lady, cannot remember who – said in here that Steve was poorly treated by Ian. But this shows me that Ian really liked and appreciated the brilliant guitarist.
But that does not mean that Ian isn’t proud and happy about SMcB!

Steve Morse was a terrific guitarist. I really loved his work.
Am I even more happy about SMcB?
    Yes. Indeed I am 😊
As has been written over and over (by me?🤭) he is very well suited for Purple, and ohh boy I am back at the In Rock excellences šŸ˜

I confess I didn’t know about 2am, I have to go and look in my photocopies of a 30 year old magazine for the article “the 100 fundamental AoR albums” to see if 2am is present!

Anyway, I have to listen to the whole album because honestly this song doesn’t seem like anything special to me, anonymous beginning, anonymous melody, chorus fished out between Brian Adams and something else American (Richard Marx, Jon White, etc).

even the voice is quite impersonal in the rich chaos of 80’s AoR…I mean, Jolene’s Rescue You or Nothing Changes albums are of a different quality than this one.

I almost succeeded in forgetting everthing the Morse era put out but here we go again.

Its not bad,IMHO because SM is not dominant in the mix

    Power of the moon …..
It reminds me of RIVERSIDE, a Polishband I went totally for for some years.
After the death of the guitarplayer I lost interest.

    Decent singing.

I now see WHOOSH was released in august of 2020.
I crashed and since I ve been in HELL since june of that year.

OCD like I think I tried to push myself into following it.
    But also skipped a lot.

    Today I m a changed man.

    CRUSHED.

    No clue how to proceed.

Today I again was imho, gaslighted about being too negative.

What do they expect from a man, damaged, grown kinda old in the last 6 years, amidst a severe depression?

    They seemed to understand before.

So much to do, but no energy….

In 99 I was working somewhere to get rid of debts, save money in order to get back on my horse.

The kitchencrew and waitresses had the habit to drink like no tomorrow after work.

Although totally ravaged I went along with drinking big glasses of beer.
Maybe I only did it when knowing the next day I didnt ve to work.
These cooks worked like slaves in that small kitchen with not enough oxygen.

Coulfnt grasp how they handled doing that, drinking so much afterwards and worh soon the day after.

Partly due to the mix of being done and drinking I talked too much.

A waitress hearing me said : “Are you aware you have to work here again? ”

I said nothing, thought of how the crew talked about her, this short ugly woman, her hoarse voice. And that she was known for living like a slut and thinking life was about houseparties together with drugs of course.

I m always too kind and remained a gentleman.
I can come out after having lost my patience already long before but then it hits hard.

And then its me of course thats gets blamed…..

Often used jokingly or mildly critical; e.g., ā€œHave you heard about the new phone? Where have you been, living under a rock?ā€
“Common knowledge” about DP and esp. Steve is “my thing”and it feels nice to amaze you, Uwe. I’m not completely uneducated in music, tried to learn the violin for about a year when I was about 11. But guitar(ist)s always caught my attention.
Nice to read that you can laugh at your own stereotypes – I laugh at them, too – now that I know a little more of your sometimes very strange humour.

@28:ā€ knickers Nicky ā€ =? Sally Long, his personal assistant. Very nice person indeed, she helped me get an autograph from Ian. @ 42- “because I have two (2!) autographs from Ian Gillan, and I guard them with my life 😃” Isn’t that what Anton is for Karin? A guard dog, a protector of all things. Although from all the torment the poor little thing has endured in regard to Ian’s vocal histrionics, it probably is better that you keep an eye on those autographs yourself. Cheers.

  44. 44

  45. 45
    Uwe Hornung says:

Anton is gonna chew up that drum stick and then there will be a family tragedy in Randers, I just know it!

The fur industry is mighty in Denmark.

  46. 46
    MacGregor says:

@ 44- Anton would know the code to that safe Karin, rest assured. Doggies watch and listen to everything. Uwe, I will worry incessantly for Anton’s sanity if you ever send that drumstick up there. Imagine the everyday scenario that unfolds before his very eyes. Karin gets the stick out, caressing it, holding it, looking at it for hours. All this time Anton is waiting for her to throw it. Every time she picks it up and then she slowly walks towards that fireproof safe and then locks the stick away again. Poor Anton, driven crazy by his master as he repeatedly thinks to himself’ why in the name of hell does she always do that, it is a stick god damn it, just throw the thing’! Cheers.

    Nooo, of course not!

But I tell you I am surprised the all-too-precise former Empire Germany is as bad as handling postal services as Denmark is!
Normally I receive spit-tests from patients via ordinary mail, but since the postal service was transferred to private companies, nothing is as it used to be in the good old days.

Oh I am not at all into all that royal hoopla. Don’t get me wrong, I won’t spit at them or anything like that 😁 but to me they are ordinary people, put their pants on one leg at the time like the rest of us.
And for the life of me, I don’t get that worshipping of people who just happen to have been born into some family!
To me it’s the inner qualities that are pivotal much more than who is allowed to wear the crown.

Indeed he is not Uwe, he is a Danish-Swedish Farmdog 😊
No royalty here thank you very much, we are all peasants 😊

Dear bro – allow me to initiate yourself into the secret world of dog breeds:
A Danish-Swedish Farmdog is its own breed! Just like a German Shepherd, or a Collie….

But had Anton been a mutt, as you so charmingly call it, I would have loved him just as much and protected him, taken care of him and fed him with the best dog food 😃

Anton is a very intelligent dog, highly trained and so well-behaved ā˜ŗļø
Unless: the postman comes to the door, or I have guests – because then he has developed this quite not so charming ability to go to the laundry basket and show off different clothing-items…. There has been some quite embarrassing episodes!
Or when I’m walking him and let him off the leash, then he likes to run away, and I’m afraid he has developed another ability: being deaf periodically…
But besides that: he is a charming doglet and I love him so much ā¤ļø

And he really likes it when I sing along to this tune:

You ought to learn the Danish language 😁

That takes utmost devotion to the subject and might be a task/labo(u)r of love for someone on, say, a remote island with too much time on his hands and in dire need of any kind of intellectual stimulation?

@ 52- thanks for that Karin and good to see Anton out and about, on that ‘pristine’ lawn of yours by the look of it. The only ‘Danish’ I am familiar with is the pastry, yummy that is too. I am familiar with a few Dutch words being in a relationship with a Dutch lady for decades. Mainly the swear words that were levelled at me occasionally for allegedly doing wrong. Same with a few Italian words from my school days, a large population of Italians in our area, farming etc. Oh and a few German words form those old war comics, Achtung, Himell, Schnell, Dummkopf etc. Oh my favourite are the French words of course, probably my only regret not learning more French. Reminds me of poor ole Poirot, constantly reminding certain people for calling him a Frenchy or a frog ” I am not French, I am Belgium”. And rightly so too. Cheers.

Well, I like the garden to be neat 😊 but I wonder if I should make a part of the garden ā€˜wild on purpose’ for the bees and insects.

Oh yes Danish pastry, ā€˜wienerbrĆød’, is very delicious but also very very fattening. And not that healthy… but once a year I enjoy it immensely šŸ˜‹
    Especially the ā€˜spandauer’!

Together with a lovely cup of coffee I can almost forget Brexit, the orange dude, climate changes… that’s how lovely it is. But I warn you: don’t eat it too often or you’ll need a new wardrobe very soon šŸ˜„

    – poor you! 😁

Denmark is too squeaky clean to offer much of a selection of swear words.
