Seven minutes short
You might recall that the Rolling Stones Mobile truck has found a permanent home at the Canadian National Music Centre in Calgary. Deep Purple were in town on August 31, 2026, and Ian Gillan paid a visit to the old chap. His story of recording Smoke is by now so thoroughly rehearsed that it has earned a permanent home of itself in his spoken-word repertoire.
The NMC has posted a reel of his visit on Instagram.

Unauthorized copying, while sometimes necessary, is never as good as the real thing
The bed track for ‘Smoke on the Water’ was recorded at a place called Pavillon des Sports in Montreux. It was a huge space with no acoustic insulation, so the sound penetrated the walls, prompting neighbors to ring the phone off the hook at the police department complaining about the noise. Here is a website link that gives an exterior view: https://www.ledzeppelin.com/venue/pavillon-montreux
September 12th, 2026 at 22:24A Led Zeppelin link to Deep Purple. Where would the Purps be without the Zep? The mind doth boggle. Cheers.
September 12th, 2026 at 23:10@2 Your mind is boggled 24/7 Mac.
September 13th, 2026 at 17:13Whenever a Purple fan loses his way from here to stumble into a Zep forum, it substantially raises the average IQ on both sites, so it’s all good! 🤗
I always see the positive in things. 😎 Seriously, one must imagine James at that Zep cave kinda like that species development enhancing monolith in 2001 …

September 16th, 2026 at 22:48@ 7- be careful Fla, you know how sensitive Uwe is to these sort of things. We wonder how many more Zeppelin forays Ian has ventured into, even if just to keep Uwe on his toes. Cheers.
September 16th, 2026 at 23:04Yo,
Without LZ, it’s likely that we would have had a few more incredible Mk-I albums…
Ciao !
September 16th, 2026 at 23:39I find it fascinating that two of hard rock’s most iconic songs, Smoke on the Water and Paranoid, were both written only because they were one song short for the album.
September 17th, 2026 at 05:00Thanks for the pop quiz Timi and Uwe, I enjoyed that. Gillan still with his mane only two months before we had Purple out here during December 1984. Also of little curiosity, David Gilmour, from what I have always read he doesn’t like being called ‘Dave’. Oh dear. All good fun though. Cheers.
