He probably never sang HS as well with Mk III and IV though that is not saying much, but I find it hard to hear DP songs, especially Mk II ones, without the trademark organ sound – it always sounds a bit like a glorified garage band to me when keyboardless groups do that. Doug does a good job of citing Jon during his first solo, but what’s the point? It still doesn’t sound like a Hammond.
I think I really prefer the Daisies doing their own stuff. There the lack of keyboards is built into the arrangement so you don’t miss it and Hughes’ and Lowy’s similarly abrasive attack on their rhythm instruments can be a charming sonic onslaught if you are that way inclined. It’s that punk-core element in the Daisies’ sound you either lover or hate –> Johnny Rrramone playing r-r-r-rhythm r-r-razor guitarrr to Burrrn! 😂
HS, Mistreated and Burn are also not exactly the most inspired choices from the DP catalog, very obvious. I would have preferred to hear what they would have done with Sail Away (they did play it that night), Holy Man or Getting Tighter.
All that said, Glenn’s playing is great as always, he really commands Burn with his bass work, sublime.

i.e. four years after the Stratocaster. Like the Strat, it was aimed at sophisticated players/professional musicians.

and, ironically, the Flying V features (by coincidence, not design) one of the few body shapes that actually has – scientifically determined – an effect on the sonics of an electric guitar. Flying Vs sound terse as opposed to phat which makes them ideal for heavier music because they do not clutter everything up where two Strats or two Les Pauls would be regarded as too much, especially with large amounts of distortion.

Like the Spitfire, the Flying V is a design classic that makes perfect sense. It’s an awesome shape.

Ofcourse most of us disagree.
IMHO certain tracks need the Hammond approach/backing though the delivery of bare bones can be very enjoyable.
Glenn s voice is essential though. His playing often not discussed.
Without him we d hardly be interested in the Dead Daisies, I think.

July 2nd, 2026 at 12:02Attila, I likely prefer The Dead Daisies even to BCC and regretted that Glenn left them. No one played badly at that gig, but I simply miss the organ with a lot of Purple songs. If you had forced me to choose between an Mk II or III concert without Jon or without Ritchie in the 70s, I would have preferred the one with Jon (and without Ritchie), that is how much I long for my organ (now that sounds a little misleading … 😂).
I think the Daisies-own material is just fine. And Lowy’s buzzsaw rhythm guitar has charm (though it fights a bit with Glenn’s bass for frequencies).
Still wondering what’s with Corabi though, the man calls Stormbringer (the album) among his desert island records, couldn’t he have been a great ersatz-DC sparring partner to Glenn for the Mk III material? Hughes’ and Corabi’s voice have gone well together in the past:

Not that Glenn can’t sing the Mk III stuff alone, but full Mk III glory will always be the dual attack of two male voices.

Doug uses a Strat for Mistreated which is right. It wouldn’t sound right with his Gibson.
I saw the DD’s with Glenn in Bristol and it was all bludgeon and no subtlety. The clip doesn’t change that opinion irrespective of how well GH sings.
July 2nd, 2026 at 13:54They have a bludgeoning approach, true, but that is more down to David Lowy’s rhythm guitar than to the make of guitars. As I wrote, Flying V’s sound the opposite of massive.
We’re simply not used to hearing Glenn with a rhythm guitarist, with the exception of the Daisies he’s never worked in a two guitar line-up. And, yes, you can ask the question whether someone who plays bass as commandingly as Glenn needs a rhythm guitarist – ever.
RV, it’s no secret that I appreciate Glenn (a lot), but his place is not fronting Mk X doing mostly Mk II (and some Mk III) material, but finally getting a funk band with a horn section together and playing the music he loves and does best. You can tell that he is not really a friend of IG’s lyrical wit either, he’s ill at ease with it. Imagine Glenn singing KAYBD or Ted the Mechanic, it just doesn’t work.
I never miss a Glenn Hughes gig (I saw him three times last year), but I don’t want to see him again heading DP. BTW: What the hell is Roger gonna do then or do you want Glenn to just sing? His vocals are better if he plays bass at the same time IMHO.
Now if both Roger and Glenn played (lead) bass and DP turned into something like a low octave Wishbone Ash, you might win me over! 😂 Actually, Roger and Glenn would be a nice team, because their styles (and sounds) are so different they wouldn’t get much in each others way.
