There is never a plan
German outfit RND has an interview with Ian Paice and Don Airey promoting the new album =1. And little concerts in little churches. All the usual caveats regarding reverse translations apply.
The album title is “=1”. Does this stand for the unity and conspiracy(?) of the band in the new lineup – “Deep Purple = 1”
Paice: That’s a very nice conclusion. Everyone in the band has a different idea about the title because Ian (Gillan) never explained to us what it means. Ian always comes up with the title of the albums — we’re too lazy for that. I like the title because everyone asks themselves, “What does that mean?” It creates interest. On the inside cover there is an endless algebraic formula — at the end it adds up to 1. It all comes down to the one, the one: you are the one who is important, I am the one. That’s how I read it (laughs)
And what do you think, Don?
Airey: I think the title leaves a nice white space on the cover for autographs.
Read more on RND.de in German, or via Google Translate in your favourite language.
Thanks to Tobias Janaschke for the heads-up.
Now , that equation looks like its written in Gillans handwriting…but, I bet you a banana …he couldn’t explain what it means ( being the Lazy Sod that he is ! )
July 7th, 2024 at 20:46Gillan likes to use symbols in album titles, which is rather novel. I asked him a rhetorical question years ago with the “?!” symbols at the end, and he later came up with “Now What?!” for an album title.
Chillin’ Gillan’s clever use of phrases is a study unto itself. “Carriage of Misjustice,” “Cunning Linguist … a Master of Many Tongues,” “Emptiness, Eagles & Snow,” “The bitch is rich but baby pound for pound, she’s got a lot more to discover.”
I mentioned to Ian once that I noticed the British often use the word “pissed” to mean someone is drunk. I told him we use it in America to mean someone is mad. He replied, “We say pissed off to mean someone is mad.” I told him Americans also say “pissed off,” but more often just say “pissed” because it’s easier/lazier.
Regarding that song title, ‘Lazy Sod’. The only time “sod” is used on this side of the pond is a reference to grass or turf. Not that it matters, but just noticing the different phraseologies.

July 7th, 2024 at 23:10And what do you think, Don?
Airey: I think the title leaves a nice white space on the cover for autographs.
🤣🤣🤣
Don has given the term “laconic comment” new meaning.
July 7th, 2024 at 23:12“And what interests you, Mr Paice?
Having enough money. I must have them to pay my bills (laughs)”
Gotta love the man, Uncle Scrooge is in his usual place, intact. Some things just don’t change, do they? 😆😅
Don is getting truly adept in “shooting down questions in flames” to leave the interviewer helpless. 🤣
The advantage of the artwork he mentions, it’s the sole one. I still find the artwork lousy and lazy. It’s gonna be probably the worst aspect of the new album. I mean, you can keep things simple but with grace (see “Perfect Strangers” with the emblem and Roger Glover’s handwriting. It IS PERFECT). “Now What!?” was turning heads already. At least the lettering was purple. I really could have done something budget but nice looking for them for few shillings. Comes to my mind the river delta gathering few lesser streams with some interpolation of the members’ faces. Fits =1 idea in my eyes. Being done well, it would at least be something to look at. But this? Could it not have been some more stylish handwriting at least? Ok, done with bitchin’ 😅 Long live RNR as Kraatzy used to say 🙃
July 8th, 2024 at 07:46The inspiration for the title =1 may come from older titles like: If 6 was nine, 4+20, 25 or 6 to 4, 7+7 is… etc. Somehow strange calculations had a space way back when IG was younger. At the end of the day it is probably just a riddle.
July 8th, 2024 at 08:50There is an unforeseen problem with the title – you can’t Google it. Even putting it in quotation marks doesn’t work; the top result comes up as Taylor Swift?! [Actually that probably happens with any Google search nowadays.] Nor did the Search box on Townsend Music’s website find it.
You’re right Uwe, Don’s comment is wonderful.

July 8th, 2024 at 13:27On google if I write
=1
suddenly appears the option
Deep Purple to be chosen
Maybe the title’s inability to be googled was not inadvertent at all? Sounds like a Gillan inside joke, he doesn’t even like search engines for their inherent manipulative effect.
I think the cover is one for austerity times! 😂 I like the minimalism of it. If truth be told, DP has had a rough ride re cover quality. The Mk I stuff was mediocre at best, In Rock to Burn were of course a high point, Stormbringer still ok though a bit throwaway airbrush motorcycle gas tank art, CTTB was already very cheesy with its “slavishly literal to the title” cover, all covers from Perfect Strangers to The Badger Rages On were either 80s bland/pretentious or again too literal (Nobody’s Perfect being an exception). Only the Morse era had decent covers again, I even liked Bananas for its apparent nihilism and the Turning To Crime cover was real good. Cover art-wise Mk VII-IX were together with Mk II to Burn DP’s most consistent periods.
As for the true meaning of the numerical equation, I herewith summon the forces of the mystic seven-faced Dr Lao to explain it to us all! Only he/they can.

July 8th, 2024 at 15:03Instead of “conspiracy” I would translate the German “Verschworenheit” with affiliation, togetherness or even (non-literal) freemasonry.

Oh, wow, that Trash remix does sound fresh! And Gillan’s vocals were louder with the Sabs than they ever were with the Purps! In the eternal words of Ritchie, he did become “fucking Tom Jones”.
July 8th, 2024 at 22:47@14: It’s not remixed yet.
July 8th, 2024 at 22:55It sounds more direct though. What did Iommi do to it?
July 8th, 2024 at 23:37@ 14 – Hoping that was a touch of sarcasm Uwe, otherwise it looks like you may be slipping ‘into steep cognitive decline’, he he he. Cheers.
July 9th, 2024 at 00:12@13 @14
I am one of the few Purple/Sabbath fans that loves the album Born Again and the live material from that tour.
July 9th, 2024 at 02:04Inquisitive Uwe @ 10,
You summoned me, and I am here.
I shall attempt to make sense of the jumble of numbers, letters and symbols in this enigmatic formula.
At first glance it appears to me to be nothing more than doodles, but as I probe deeper I see the meaning.
It is complex yet at the same time simple.
Let me explain it this way: though I may have Seven Faces, there is only ONE me, ONE Dr. Lao.
And so, in our universe of which UNI = ONE…..we find time, space, and matter.
But there is only ONE time……we simply subdivide that time into smaller fragments of time.
And there is only ONE space…..we simply subdivide that space into many smaller spaces.
And there is only ONE matter, or we can call it energy, of which there is only ONE….it is simply broken down into subsets of energy.
In the end, everything boils down to ONE.
And so, as there is ONE Sun, ONE Moon, ONE Sky and ONE Earth; so it is that there is only ONE Truth.
The truth is there is only ONE light.
That ONE light, when distorted by a spectrum produces an array of many colours.
Just as Joseph was adorned of many colours, he nevertheless had only ONE coat.
And now you ask, how does this all relate to your Purple heroes?
Well my inquisitive ONE, know this….
More truth……there is only ONE sound.
Like the ONE light, that ONE sound wave when distorted by a musical player produces a multitude of frequencies, tones, pitches and notes.
All those different little sounds are simply smaller subdivisions of the ONE sound.
And so everything in the end, all comes down to ONE.
Everything when added together, multiplied, divided, subtracted and manipulated in a variety of ways, still comes down to ONE final answer.
It all
Equals
ONE.
July 9th, 2024 at 03:21“@ 14 – Hoping that was a touch of sarcasm Uwe, otherwise it looks like you may be slipping ‘into steep cognitive decline’, he he he.”
You do a neurological test first, Herr MacGregor! 🤣😆😘
“I am one of the few Purple/Sabbath fans that loves the album Born Again and the live material from that tour.”
You wish, Dr Bob, Gillabath has long become a cult favorite, even here. Even most core Sabbath fans have made their peace with it. Svante is a fan too.
@19: Thank you, Dr Lao, that explains it all. And as my gaze wanders between my legs the revelatory nature of your scriptures is lucid: THERE IS ALSO ONLY ONE BALL !!! 😆
July 9th, 2024 at 16:31I missed that because I read the German original, but Gerriet is right, “Verschwörung” means conspiracy in German, but “verschworen sein” or “eine verschworene Gemeinschaft bilden” means “closely-knit” or “forming a closely-knit unit”.
July 9th, 2024 at 17:36Dear Dr Lao.
This can be summarised in just one short quotation, from Phil Lynnot and Si’s own Gary Moore:
“Death is just a heartbeat away”
Just one. Tik! And you’re gone.
Here’s how all comes down to one.
July 9th, 2024 at 19:53=1
Eureka Uwe @ 20,
Yes indeed you see it clearly now. At first glance you may behold an orb.
There is only one ORB.
And of and in which there can be other smaller ones, in most cases two.
But that is simply a function of symmetry….subdivisions of the ONE.
And that symmetry springs forth at the time of creation.
Now, for further ponderings on the matter of orbs, I have written more scripture for you.
Seek out the @20 in Chapter : “We listen to the new album, part 3 =1″……….
July 10th, 2024 at 01:19Thorsun @22,
Indeed you have boiled it all down to its essence.
Like the tick tock of a clock, once unwound, there is no more sound.
Of the billions of heartbeats in ONE life, it takes but ONE missed beat to end it.
And so, with that ONE last tick tock of the clock…
And so, with that ONE last thump in the chest….
Then it is “Time’s Up” for that ONE person.
But for Time itself, well, Time marches on.
That is because there is only ONE Time.
The clock and calendar simply measure time in small increments…
All those seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years, decades, centuries, millennia are simply miniscule parts of the ONE Time.
The ONE Time which is subdivided in its own way for every single being.
Meanwhile at the end of its Time, that ONE body becomes ONE again with Energy, it simply becomes just a different form of energy.
And all forms of energy, stem from the ONE Energy.
And as that ONE person’s energy form has changed, that person no longer occupies the same space.
Instead the person’s energy moves to a different space.
But all those spaces are but smaller parts of the ONE Space.
So there you have it Sun of Thor…………………..Time, Space & Energy.
ONE of each, all of which subdivide and multiply in myriad and mysterious ways.
And now you may ask, why are there three of those ONEs then?
A clue for you……Uni = One.
The answer…….ONE Time, ONE Space, ONE Energy = ONE Universe.
Everything is but a speck of dust, a tiny miniscule subdivision of the ONE Universe.
Everything = 1.
July 10th, 2024 at 02:10@7 AndreA
Not on my laptop! I just tried it again and the first result is still Ms Swift and there’s no sign of Deep Purple, though I didn’t scroll down more than a couple of screens.
Then again, I guess it didn’t harm Ed Sheeran’s album sales.

For Dr Lao/Dame Edna/Auntie Purplette/DeeperPurps:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kaGwuGwsZQ
Actually, that is an excellent (and even relatively recent) track from Alan Parsons. Purple should use it as intro music for their =1 tour.
Ted, I think you’re caught in an algorithm – you obviously spend too much time on Taylor sites, you closet Swiftie!
But I have to agree, when I search
=1
I get Taylor too. And even adding “Purple”
=1 Purple
only brings up sneakers …

July 10th, 2024 at 15:07Uwe @ 27……wonderful find! That video accords with everything that Dr. Lao has written. And Science has confirmed what the Mystics have known all along! = 1
And now for the Purple family link in all this….did you take special note of the guitarist in that performance? That is Mr. Jeff Kollman also known as Glenn Hughes’ occasional touring guitarist. I have seen Kollman with Hughes on the Deep Purple tour in 2018. Great player.
July 10th, 2024 at 15:22Ah, you’re in Clark Kent mode again, Dr Lao. Yeah, Alan Parsons Project is a bit thinking man’s Air Supply, but, darn, they have an embarrassment of good tunes and this is one of them.
Wow, Kollman struck me as somehow familiar, but I couldn’t put my finger on it (I’ve seen him once with Alan Parsons live), he also played, co-wrote and co-produced on Glenn’s In The Key Of Rock! It’s all connected indeed, or as your mystic alter ego would put it =1 …
He’s actually a porphyrophile and cites Blackmore as a major influence.

Seems like a really nice guy too. And he can play.

July 10th, 2024 at 18:55@ 28 – about time Uwe that you appreciated quality lyrics. A touch ‘other worldly’ for you though are they not? Maybe Dr Lao is correct Uwe, you are learning grasshopper, keep it up, he he he. Seriously, Geezer wrote some really good lyrics back in the day. Great stuff. Cheers.
July 11th, 2024 at 00:32@25 AndreA
Ah, but you added “Deep Purple”, I only said that searching “=1” doesn’t work.
July 11th, 2024 at 13:32Uwe @ 30…yes indeed, a fine guitarist and nice fellow that Jeff Kollman is. He recently did an extensive interview on the Sea of Tranquility site, about 2 weeks ago. Here’s the clip…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXWZK9eLLCs
July 11th, 2024 at 15:03Naw, I never had issues with Geezer’s lyrics, I thought them much deeper and prone to interpretation than Dio singing the storyboards to graphic novel fantastical hogwash.
There is some philosophical and sociological thought to what Geezer wrote, Dio’s words otoh were all escapist cosplaying.
July 11th, 2024 at 19:21@27 Uwe
“Ted, I think you’re caught in an algorithm – you obviously spend too much time on Taylor sites, you closet Swiftie!”
Honestly, I’d only recognise one Taylor Swift song and only because it reminds me of The Wheels on the Bus!
July 12th, 2024 at 09:16If you know one of Taylor’s songs, you pretty much kow them all, Ted, that is her salient commonality with Status Quo, The Ramones and Motörhead. 🤣
Seriously, I hardly ever hear a Taylor song that I don’t find pleasant or hummable, but when I hear one of her albums (yes, I do buy them out of curiosity) I can’t tell which song was which by the end of it!
Now the collective wrath of the fearsome Swifties will crush down on me – will they storm this forum?
https://cdn.openart.ai/published/npiVOWnbcPgcSHR48PWC/nx-IsDSe_rFSv_raw.jpg
July 13th, 2024 at 00:25@ 36 – I think you are safe there Uwe. Time has shown that there are no known ‘swifties’ lurking within this site. Well if there are, would they be game enough to raise their head(s). Cheers.
July 15th, 2024 at 00:36Well the devil is in the detail at 36. “Seriously, I hardly ever hear a Taylor song that I don’t find pleasant or hummable, but when I hear one of her albums (yes, I do buy them out of curiosity) I can’t tell which song was which by the end of it!” Uwe revealing his penchant for purchasing Taylor Swift cd’s. So we now ‘know’ who the ‘Swiftie’ is that lurks here. Hmmmmm, we had better be careful. Cheers.
