Coverdale the all-American boy

David Coverdale has become a U.S. Citizen. On Thursday March 1 he raised his right hand in Reno, Nevada, and swore to the U.S. Constitution. He has been living on the north shore of Lake Tahoe for the past 22 years (that’s since 1985, for the mathematically challenged of us). I’m no lawyer, but to the best of my knowledge this means that he had to get out of British citizenship as UK doesn’t allow it’s citizens (or are they subjects?) to acquire passports of another country.

Thanks to Reno Gazette-Journal for the info.

You can have two passports & joint citizenship whilst a UK citizen.

I myself have UK & Australian citizenship & my baby son has US & UK citizenship.

    A quote from DC himself…

“I am very happy to say that after a 5 year process, I successfully applied for, & was granted, US citizenship on March 1st 2007. I still maintain my British citizenship, tho’ I am proud to say I now have dual citizenship for both Great Britain & the United States of America, & as it is most unlikely that my two countries will go to war against each other in the forseeable future, there should be no conflict of interest!”

what’s hope of DC? All your interest is the money. Your musice since 1987 are focused in sale, sale and sale in the States. The rest of the world doesn’t matter. Now is american citizen. He is coherent whit your behaviour, and grateful with the country of your u$s millions.

I think David’s main reason for becoming an American, is so he can share a common nationality as his US born son, Jasper, to whom, he seems completely devoted.

As a father myself, I can relate to that, and fully understand the decision and I do not think it was about money AT ALL, (although being permanently exempt from the extortionate UK tax rates, would be too much of an attractive proposition for anyone to refuse).

Even though, he can (and has), retained his British Citizenship, in order to become a US citizen David would have had to pledge alligiance to the United States flag and renounce all loyalty to his native country. Which leaves me wondering, why have a British passport and have no loyalty to Britain? What’s the bloody point in that?

I personally, would NEVER renounce by British Citizenship OR pledge alligiance to any flag or government other than Great Britain, no matter how long I had lived there.

I wish David all the best now that he has become a mere colonial, but I’m slightly saddened at the news that yet another one of England’s greatest talents has been seduced by the American dream, but hey, we all saw this one coming 20 years ago.

I wonder if he’ll do an Arnie, and run for Governor of Nevada?.
