A temporary ruckus

An interview with Jon Lord, done before the Concerto performance in Dublin in September 2009, is available from Irish public broadcaster RTE. This obviously has previously appeared in print, albeit in unspecified publication. Jon quips about the Concerto, past and present. Regarding the original 1969 performance and alleged tensions within the band about it: The […]

Review: Deep Purple — A Matter of Fact

Wymer Publishing were kind enough to send us a preview copy of Jerry Bloom’s Deep Purple — A Matter of Fact. First things first: what this book is not. It is not a comprehensive biography of the band. It does not pretend to be. As such, I would not recommend it as an introductory reading […]

Bob See RIP

Bob See, the founder and the owner of a lightning and sound production company called See Factor, has passed away on February 10. Purple connection? He designed and built the enormous rainbow that adorned the stage of the eponymous band during the RJD years. Later on, he also was responsible for the giant eyes stage prop seen during the Straight Between the Eyes tour.

Long Beach 1971

Another archival release is being prepared by Edel, and this one looks quite interesting. Titled simply Long Beach 1971 it contains a widely bootlegged show from July 30, 1971, recorded for University of Southern California’s radio station KUSC, to be aired on their Monday Night Airbag Live show hosted by Elliot Mass. Darker Than Blue […]

Bluebirds flying out of every orifice

An interview with exuberant, name dropping bon vivant David Coverdale was featured on an episode of The Eddie Trunk Podcast that was posted on December 3. It was meant to promote Back to the Bone, but a long and entertaining interview covered a lot of history. My favourite bit is probably about Cozy Powell, who […]

Marsden, the guitar unhero

Bernie Marsden recently spoke to Rockpages.gr, promoting his solo album Shine. The conversation also turned to history. On PAL: Rockpages.gr: What do you remember from the Paice, Ashton, Lord album “Malice In Wonderland”? Bernie Marsden: Ooh, I remember everything! It was one of the best things I have ever recorded! A very very good record, […]

Colin Hart interview revisited

The official YouTube channel has posted an expanded version of the video interview with Colin Hart. Colin started working for the band as a roadie back in 1971, then became tour manager for Elf, Rainbow, and post-reunion Deep Purple. It was probably recorded shortly after his retirement from the band circa 2001. Many of what […]

Child in Time and Black Night

The official Youtube channel has posted a couple of clips — Child in Time and Black Night — with narration from Jon Lord. I have a strong deja vu feeling about both of them, so they’re probably recycled from the recent DP(o) video releases.
