   The last time I saw Engelbert believe-it-or-not was in a Jimi Hendrix documentary where he was in conversation with Jimi himself circa 1967…He sure has aged well !

   Humpy has aged very gracefully indeed. He was still in remarkably good voice on his previous LP (2023); will be interested to hear this new one as well. The first single, “Drive” suits him well.

   Guess the song featuring Steve Morse will be a version of the 80s hit by Heart?

   Always preferred his music to that of Tom Jones, because of his smoother delivery, less raucous choice of material, and the fact that in concert he seemed to take himself less seriously. Once saw Jones embarrass a fan by snubbing her when she went up to the stage to hand him some lacy undergarments. Humpy by contrast waited around after the lights went up to accept every gift and sign autographs for anybody who wanted one.

   He, Jones and Gilbert O’Sullivan were all given their stage names by manager Gordon Mills. EH was no doubt happy to go along with the change as, by then, he had already been playing the clubs and recording for close to a decade with little success, having been sidelined at times by compulsory military service and tuberculosis. Under his new name he soon rocketed to well-deserved success.

   Sadly vast swathes of his oeuvre – all his early pre-“Engelbert” recordings, many of his Decca single sides, and most of his CBS albums – have to this day never been reissued on CD.

   You know what, it ain’t bad. His voice sounds surprisingly AORish. Of course he can’t kick in the door like Ann Wilson did with her piercing soprano chorus, Arnold is 90 years old and was baritonish even as a young man. But that’s a respectable performance of an AOR Classic.

   As the original was already sung in a relatively low register by The Cars’ bassist Benjamin Orr (both he and Ric Ocasek as the other, more edgy lead vocalist of the band didn’t really have classic AOR high tenor voices), Engelbert doesn’t even need to make your ears adjust.

   But I’m biased with this song anyway, I think it’s one of the best after-the-breakup songs ever and The Cars can do little wrong with me. Brilliant band. Elliot Easton’s two guitar solos are breathtaking on this track here, Brian May’esque in their succinct tastefulness:

    I know Pat Boone’s Metal Mood album has its fans, but I’m not one of them, I think he had real rhythmic issues singing rock and sounded stiff/out of his depth most of the time. In contrast, Engelbert adjusts just fine to the AOR crooning requirements, at least in the three songs I have now heard. Or maybe those melody-drenched AOR chorus parts are not that far removed from what he usually does.

    This reminds me of an another crooner who almost 30 years ago also made an album with covers : Pat Boone in a metal mood / No more Mr Nice Guy. On this album the singer covered hard rock/metal songs such as Smoke on the water, Holy Diver, Crazy Train, Enter Sandman, … all backed by a big band. Very similar to the way James Last does covers of well known songs.
    I’m curious to know how Engelbert has tackled all those songs. A lot of them I know, but Faithfully, Something, Heaven, I don’t want to miss a thing, Always my love, I won’t back down and Mama, I’m coming home are not familiar to me. Can anybody tell me who are the original artists of these songs ?

    Prem @9 was a little quickier here.

    Just what I was thinking about….a little bit in the vein of Pat Boone and Paul Anka. Of course, they were more towards hard rock when they made their things and so on, but… somehow I believe that E. H. will deliver more than for example the character familiar from…outer space… ; )

    This CD might really be interesting and is very welcome – just for a change in mind. He is 90 years already! Hats off!

    Not much of an AOR listener, were you? 😎 Bands/artists in the sequence of the songs you named: Journey, Beatles, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Tom Petty and Ozzy.

    Only Always My Love is a a previously not recorded by another band/artist song, but penned either by or for Engelbert, his record company states:

    The album features a newly composed original track “Always My Love”, adding a very personal touch to the project.”

    It’s pretty much a lounge ballad waltz and sticks a bit out like a sore thumb on the album:

    @13 Many thanks for the info, Uwe ! I looked all these songs up on You Tube and they are all in the same vain … ballads !!! This is not really my cup of tea because I prefer music from groups/artists such as Return to Forever, Billy Cobham, Weather Report and progressive rock (Jethro Tull, Ian Gillan Band, Colosseum II, etc…) and hard rock (Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake, etc…) from the seventies. In my ears that was the golden decade of music. Real musicianship and excellent songwriting !

    In the clip “I won’t back down” (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) I recognized Tom Petty, George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Jeff Lynne. But who is playing the solo on slide guitar ???

    Agreed…”Candy O” imo is not only their best effort, but ages better & better each year that goes-by…One of the best definitive time-capsule albums of not only 1979, but of the whole 2nd-1/2 of the decade too imo.

    I thought that “everyone” would follow the well crafted futuristic sounds found on this album, & that they were the needle on the compass pointing to not only where-its-at, but where-it-will-go…

    That said, apart from “Panorama”, they struck gold big time with other more radio-friendly albums than “Candy O”…But this is the album to crank-right-up even today.

    I actually like both, a good AOR power ballad – Yanks do’em best – is an art form too, but Cobham, Weather Report, IGB, Colosseum I + II and RTF all float my Bismarck too.

    The (then) Brian May lookalike in the vid is Petty’s decades-long mainstay lead guitarist from the Heartbreakers, the extremely gifted Mike Campbell. Here he was channeling his inner George Harrison, likely overawed that George and Ringo were part of the sessions. After Tom’s untimely death because of those crap opioids our American friends prefer to gulp down in greater quantities than any other nation in the world, he formed his own band – The Dirty Knobs – and what can I say, all those decades with Tom Petty (not the worst inspiration) have rubbed off:
