The first take is always the one

John McCoy has appeared on the Now Spinning Magazine podcast, talking about the Gillan band. It was an in-depth conversation, at 1 hour and 16 minutes, so we haven’t listened all the way through it yet. But we’re being assured that here John does not sound as bitter as in his other recent interviews.

Thanks to steve4422 for the heads-up.

McCoy admires Ian to this day, you can still hear it, he’s just incredibly hurt and can’t get over it. He was often accusing of Ian, but more like a jilted lover, I never heard real nastiness in his at times self-pitying lament.

The story of IGB and GILLAN is that Ian from a certain point onward resorted to thinking (only) of himself – like a person that’s drowning. Calling the end of both bands was every time essentially a knee jerk reaction. And not one dealt with excessive transparency which didn’t make things easier.

Basically, Ian attempted to be an entrepreneur with IGB and GILLAN. When he failed both times, he looked around and took a job with Black Sabbath (which yielded in my – and Savante’s! -view great musical results, but it was still just a job).

In my very humble opinion, and yes I do know most of the glorious people in here are dead against me, nevertheless: I honestly think BS benefited BIG time when Ian joined forces with them for that one glorious year 😃

Yes yes, I know OO is everyone’s favourite, and I will certainly not say anything bad about him, but ohhh man Ian is just so much better ☺️

    Max says:

Born Again is by far the best BS album in my book and a highlight in Ian’s carreer. But I am biased of course. I loved OO on the screen, liked his interviews and even read his books – but I can’t stand his singing for a second song…

“Born Again is by far the best BS album in my book and a highlight in Ian’s carreer.”
    – see! Great minds do think alike 😃

    “read his books”
    – sorry, really not to be nasty, but books? I once saw the gentleman with his family in some Kardashian-like tv show, (and no I’ve never seen the Kardashian show either, I just mention this so Uwe knows what show I’m referring to 😄) and again sorry, but all OO did was cursing and farting – at least in the 10 minutes I was awake.
But hey if he has been writing books, I’ll change my opinion immediately!

“but I can’t stand his singing for a second song…”
    – hey! Where were you when I was attacked by the bloodthirsty lawyer in here, when I silently and very politely mentioned that I didn’t understand his way of singing should be something else?
I can of course fight my own battles in here (as I do irl) but it would be nice not to be all alone when it comes to attacks from the almighty lawyer 😁

    Uwe Hornung says:

Ozzy’s wail was characteristic, but I never thought him the most compelling frontman, little animal grace, certainly no Robert Plant or Mick Jagger.

On paper, Sabbath & Ian looked weird, but on the Born Again album it all gelled and the outcome was as interesting as, say, IGB’s Clear Air Turbulence. It was pleasantly weird.

  9. 9
    Georgivs says:

John’s story just shows how some people are privileged by having a certain charisma, while some others are only blessed by an opportunity of bathing in that charisma for a while, before falling into oblivion. Most IGB and Gillan members just ended up falling by the wayside musically and sometimes personally. Very few of them recovered to have successful careers. Meanwhile, Ian went on to be a successful frontman for BS and DP and stayed in the focus of attention. What was just an episode for him, was the pinnacle of the career for his musicians, and the end of that stint became a true tragedy for them. This is not to reproach Ian, but just to realize how things may be unfair in this world.

Well I have to work for a living – or make that: the living of those sons I stand responsible for plus to pay the bills and the Rundfunkgebühren (in Germany you have to pay for being entertained lousy and constantly preached to even more lousy – if you chose so or not.) So I just don’t find the time to read every thread here on HS. Rest asured, Karin, I support most of your views though – with the exception of your view on the King and that Rowan Peeping or whatshisname. And maybe some others.

    “Ozzy’s wail”
    – when I translate ‘wail’, it can also be a howl!
Well, I cannot claim to have heard all OO’s singing, but I really wouldn’t say it is howling! Perhaps more a gruntish way of singing. Which of course is very charming, and sufficient, but howl? No no no no!

    “pleasantly weird.”
    – it was spectacular 🤩
    Especially this tune:

🤣 Jack walked into a sports bar 🍺 around 9:58 pm and sat next to a blonde 👱‍♀️ just as the 10:00 news came on 📺.
A man was on a ledge of a tall building 🏙️ about to jump.
The blonde asked, “Do you think he’ll jump?” 🤔
Jack said, “I bet he will.” 👍
    She said, “I bet he won’t.” 🙅‍♀️
They each put $30 💵 on the bar. Sure enough, the man swan-dived 🏊‍♂️ off the building to his death. Upset, she handed Jack her $30, saying, “Fair’s fair…”
Jack replied, “I can’t take your money. I saw this earlier on the 5 o’clock news ⏰.”
The blonde said, “So did I… but I didn’t think he’d do it again.” 🤯
    🤣💵 Jack took the money.

Wimmin shouldn’t tell jokes, didn’t your brothers teach you that?

“Ian P told a funny story: first time Purple visited Denmark, he fell in love with this beautiful girl – but sadly she wanted the singer 🤓“

That must have been Rod Evans then because Mk I visited Denmark already in 1968 on their first tour – The Artwoods with Jon Lord had been popular there so there was a contact to promoters.

I’m pretty sure he meant Ian!

But of course you would, dearest! 🤣

PS: Only in Karin‘s ‘solar system of all things Ian-ness’, DP is automatically and unquestioningly equated with Mk II and DP‘s “first visit to Denmark” happened with her favorite singer …

but by all accounts Rod – that jawline! – was deemed as “manly handsome” in the late 60s. Talks about him turning to an acting career in Hollywood did not come from nothing.

I’m pretty sure the ignored drummer meant Rod, back from their joint days with The Maze/MI5 (sharpen your pre-DP history knowledge, Karin!), Paicey always had this “kid brother” status to Rod.

Well, I just asked some female friends: who is the more handsome – Rod or Ian, and Uwe you cannot guess what my little survey reveals!
    (Yes you can 😂)

I am sure all of Hollywood wanted Rod, and good riddance 😁
But still, Ian was (sorry still is) tall, dark(-ish) and handsome (you know like Clark Gable!)
There just is something about tall men…. With dark-ish hair….
    Well, where was I?
Ohhh yes, thanks for the insight from yesterday. I wrote a little comment, but I’m afraid our strict and very fair admin people found we had chatted enough about non-music topics! So let me never speak another word (or write) about anything non-musical, and instead let me link to this 😊:

    Skippy O'Nasica says:

Paice does get his dates and facts mixed up sometimes. But if he said “first time Purple visited Denmark” he must have been referring to Rod.

Rod was quite the ladies’ man, apparently! To Paice’s disappointment, and possibly Jon’s as well. In his “Face to face” interview with Rick Wakeman, Lord mentions meeting and admiring the Emmaretta about whom DP would soon record a tribute. And laments the fact that she went off with Rod instead.

Rick must really love the “Emmaretta” record – he also asked Paice about it in that “Gas Tank” interview:

#24&26 I don’t want to preach to anyone here, but there’s a very good recording of the concert in Greve, Denmark, and near the end, Ian talks about the girl who wanted the singer. If I understand him correctly, he said it was in 1968. So our lawyer seems to be right.

You do know you just broke Karin‘s heart, she doesn‘t like it at all if positive things are not solely attributed to St. Gillan, Patron Saint of the Ping-Pong Ball!

Skippy, I asked the guy who was with me at the concert (because I was under the influence of well, a tiny amount of alcohol, and normally only a small amount makes me dance on the tables and whatnot so I don’t support me solely on my memory) and according to him Ian P said: in the early 70s, and therefore I guess it must have been Ian Gillan he was thinking of!

    And then you say Skippy:
“Rod was quite the ladies’ man, apparently!”
    – well, I take your word for this!
Because everyone knows that Ian Gillan always has been completely insignificant to the ladies (there may be some irony buried in that sentence!☺️😉) (if you want to, go to his fb page and read the many marriage proposals he’s getting on a daily basis 😄) (ohh sorry, I was just checking it out, and apparently the proposals are missing the last days…)

Do you, honestly Uwe, think your starlet ms Swift, could make such a comeback after 15 years away from the scene?

  38. 38
    Uwe Hornung says:

“Do you, honestly Uwe, think your starlet ms Swift, could make such a comeback after 15 years away from the scene?”

    A few facts:

Taylor (“the starlet”) has been a recording artist for 20 years in which she recorded 12 studio albums. They all went platinum. The Manchester Gallagher Bros managed 15 years first time around and recorded eight studio albums which sold less and less beginning with their third one. Their current touring set is almost solely culled from their first two albums from 1994 and 1995, they are an oldies band – Deep Purple play more recent songs in their sets – churning out songs from 30 years ago when Tony Blair was Prime Minister, remember him? Taylor was six years old at the time.

Last I read Oasis’ global sales were at something like 40 million (about as much as Judas Priest) while Ms Swift has sold over 245 million albums worldwide and approximately 120 million equivalent album units, which include digital downloads and streams.

Finally, Ms Swift started out as a 14-year-old doing New Country songs and – against the will of her manager, publishing and record company – moved from this

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuNIsY6JdUw

    to this

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3zqJs7JUCQ

Meanwhile, any musical progression with Oasis has escaped me (they’re a bit like Status Quo with better haircuts and more teeth replacements) and their fans mostly stopped listening after (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? which came out in 1995.

I hope the few hints given above equip you with the ample means to answer your question yourself, Karin. Consider it your new home assignment if you will.😇

PS: The first two sentences of “the starlet’s” Wiki page read:

Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter. Known for her autobiographical songwriting, artistic reinventions, and cultural impact, Swift is the highest-grossing live music artist, the wealthiest female musician, and one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

    – yes Lawyer extraordinaire! But that’s certainly only because her listeners are teen girls (oh and you of course 😆) with more money than brains…..
(Sorry, know that was a bit harsh, but had to say it to you, so your soul somehow can be saved…)

“Last I read Oasis’ global sales were at something like 40 million (about as much as Judas Priest) while Ms Swift has sold over 245 million albums..”
    – yes yes yes! Read my comment above 😄

“Meanwhile, any musical progression with Oasis has escaped me”
    – alright then, but why change something that really works and are completely wonderful?

“Consider it your new home assignment if you will.😇”
    – thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Unfortunately I need to work, save people and help them to recover and feel a lot better, so when I’m done, I certainly will dwell into that 😃

“Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13”
    – awwww 🥹 same date (not year Uwe, date!) as my late darling mum!

    “Known for her autobiographical songwritingl
    – ohhh YEAH! 😠 where she outed all former boyfriends like a spoiled princess in a fairytale made either by H.C.Andersen or the Grimm brothers from your splendid country! In Danish she would say: “Duer ikke, væk!”
While she cold-blooded and vicious pointed out all their flaws, and completely forgot that she herself may not be perfect….

Oh, but let’s not quarrel about her Uwe, especially when there are so many other fun thing to discuss 😄😄

What do you think about this I wonder:

  40. 40
    Uwe Hornung says:

Taylor Swift has long left the teenage fandom mold behind and covers two to three generations at least. With her diaristic, conversational style she writes about relationships mostly, which is frankly globally a 24/7 theme for most anyone. People have grown up with her music yet stayed on as fans. To me she is more a songwriter than a dance pop act (though she has elements of that too). She is also one of the few youngish artists that still adheres to the album format, each and every album of her is a thematic concept. We should all thank her for keeping that tradition alive.

And since Karin always unjustly accuses me: I swear to Tommy Bolin’s gentle soul that I don’t even find Taylor hot. She at best personifies US “girl next door”-charm to me. I find Lady Gaga a lot more hot in her edginess.

Never changing a once found successful style like Oasis, AC/DC, the Ramones, Motörhead or Status Quo? I can see the appeal for many people in that – fans can be a conservative bunch -, but I hardly find that artistically ambitious. Purple didn’t restrict themselves like that nor did The Beatles, David Bowie or Prince. I lean more in that direction.

Glenn Miller? Glenn Hughes is named after him. How can anyone with ears not like that sax-drenched swinging sound? I grew up with his music, my parents both loved it – to them it was the sound of freedom conquering Nazism. Great musician. And there is something in Glenn Miller that swings in DP, but not in LZ or BS.
