King of Dreams director passes away

Filmmaker James Foley, who directed the King of Dreams video off Slaves and Masters, has passed away at the age of 71 following a year-long battle with brain cancer. His work included acclaimed films and shows, such as Glengarry Glen Ross, House of Cards, Billions, Twin Peaks, as well as numerous music videos — mostly for Madonna, but Deep Purple among them as well.

Honorary mention: The two sequels to Fifty Shades Of Grey, just sayin’!

This won’t win me any friends here, but King Of Dreams was the closest DP ever came to a proper MTV vid, all angsty, paranormal and suppressed teenage sexuality as it was. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking that for once they had put some money in a vid that was properly directed and filmed (even the band looked cool in it) and did not jar with the song it accompanied.

So danke, Herr Foley, for proving that DP vids must not necessarily look embarrassing, hope you get a neighbor cloud to Stanley Kubrick’s so you have someone to chat with.

“Slaves and Masters”… an ok Rainbow album by Blackmore, Turner, Glover, Lord and Paice.
